I Wish You Enough

I recieved this email the other day from my grandmother and I wanted to share it with all of you. Hope this makes your day a little brighter, as it did mine.

I Wish You Enough
At an airport I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together. They had announced her plane's departure and standing near the door she said, "Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy." They kissed good-bye and she left. He walked over toward the window where I was seated.
Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?"
"Yes, I have."
Forgive me for asking, but why is this forever good-bye?" I asked. "I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, her next trip back will be for my funeral," he said. "When you were saying good-bye I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?"
He began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone." He paused a moment and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled even more.
"When we said 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with enough good things to sustain them".
He continued and then, turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory:
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish enough 'Hellos' to get you through the final 'Good-bye'.
He then began to sob and walked away.

My friends and loved ones, I wish you ENOUGH!!!
They say, "It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire lifetime to forget them."

Share this with your family, friends and loved ones, make sure they know how much they mean to you.

Thank you so much for this.

Quite a thoughtful e-mail. That was a nice read, thanks.

anleja 10-17-2003 06:36 PM

That's a nice read, thank you.

mattevil 10-17-2003 06:55 PM

good stuff. it's nice to hear this stuff when life has jaded you for a while.

Macheath 10-18-2003 03:56 AM

Nice. There's a lot to be said for balance in all things - even happiness and sadness.

I got back and forth. I think the notion of hoping that another person have "a life filled with enough good things to sustain them" is a noble thing. I think the gushy story the sentiment is wrapped in is a wheelbarrow full of smelly crap.

So I try to pick the nobility and leave the crap.

fallen_angel 10-18-2003 11:50 AM

ya know this is just a really nice email my grandmother sent me, you dont have to go being asses about it just because its sentimental, and you are big strong men that cant handle that kinda stuff.
You need to leave your opinions where someone wants to hear them and its not on this thread.
and im sorry if im crossing a line but thats how i feel and i hope others do too when you read their comments.

I think it was really neat - thanks for posting it so others had a chance to see it.

I believe that Snopes calls it "glurge."

I agree with thenewguy. Fallen_Angel, thank you for posting it, the sentiment behind it is nice. I wish everybody enough in their lives. The airport story is a work of fiction, and some people like things wrapped up in chicken-soup-for-the-soul stories like those, and that's fine. People take what they want from it.

But you can't tell me you posted it here and didn't expect anybody to react negatively in SOME way....?

Great post Angel. I have 3 kids and I really cannot imagine the day that I have to say goodbye to one of them forever. I feel for the man saying goodbye but the way they did it seems to make it a little better.

Again, thanks for the good read.

I've had days where I received 5 or 6 of these things. My mom is notorious for sending them along. Makes for a nice read if you are into that sort of thing.

I'm not jaded just realistic enough to know a Hallmark thought when I read one.

I'm sure it was posted with the best intentions and thank you for thinking of us.

Some of us just have differing ideas of what is spirit lifting.

Brought a tear to my eye. Very moving and certainly true... Thank Angel. :)

BTW -- Check out my quote. ;)

ENOUGH ALREADY!!! <<< WARNING: JOKE ALERT!! >>>

/sweet though... maybe a tad too much?

twotimesadingo 10-22-2003 10:10 AM

I'm all for it.

The stories that pull at the heart-strings are the best ones.

While it's certainly a contrivance, I think the message is what's important. After all, aren't all non-fiction stories merely constructs that are used to make a point of some kind?
That it's "dishonest" makes it no different from the novels you pick up at your local bookstore.

raeanna74 10-22-2003 11:57 AM

I appreciate you sharing the story. It has a good thought or lesson for us. Thanks.

The negativity here was unnecesary. I'm sorry for that. I know you posted this as an encouragement and were not looking for a critique. I suppose the negativity unwittingly contrasts with the positive here to make it more meaningful possibly.

fallen_angel 10-22-2003 12:00 PM

The message that is being sent in this is the only thing I wished people would understand. The only reason I posted this was to brighten someones day by sharing this. The story may be completely fabricated but it still has a good meaning behind it. The nagativity is truely unnecessary but I understand with good comes bad, and the irony is that that is what this means, I wish you enough bad to make all the good mean that much more meaningful. . .

numberfive 10-22-2003 12:15 PM

Thanks, my grandmother likes to send me stories like these as well and some of them do brighten my day.

Bill O'Rights 10-22-2003 12:17 PM

Well...I'm gonna go stand on fallen_angel's side of the room. I liked it. In a world filled with G.W. Bush, 9/11, SARS, the economy, etc, etc....I need to read something like that once in awhile.

So, from the bottom of the heart of someone who's had just a piece of crap day, up until about 5 minutes ago...Thank You fallen_angel. I needed that. More than you will ever know.

jimk 10-22-2003 12:42 PM

nice story.

Moreland 10-22-2003 03:11 PM

I have tears on my cheeks now because of that, and I dont care what some of you say, I will forward that and remember it.

Thankyou very much for sharing it.

shimmy1 10-22-2003 03:13 PM

I usually forward that one (I've gotten it a few times over), even though I rarely believe them. A lot of those emails don't make it past my box though.

bundy 10-22-2003 07:23 PM

i think thats a really beautiful message.
i´m close to tears.
i can´t imagine what it must feel like for that father and his daughter to know that thats the last time they´ll meet.
i won´t forget that message.

thanks for posting this fallen_angel.
