Haircuts

I'm not peculiar about my haircut at all and am pretty satisfied with whatever I get.

I just go in and say "regular or short" to the barber (MUST be a man. i dont feel comfortable with a woman cuttin my hair).

for the past 4 years or so, this guy has been cuttin my hair. he just uses the scissors/comb combo + the shaving thing (for edges and such) and does a pretty good job on me. he also has this ghetto hair sucker that leaves u with hair all over your body (which i kinda got used to and like now).

anyway, i am now in austin and got a haircut today and boy did i find out lots of new things. the guy applied some kinda fluid before he trimmed the edges and had this massager-type-hair-sucker that cleaned me up real well. he also used all kinds of diff things on my hair. weird stuff.

anyway, what are your haircut specifications?

Mael 10-14-2003 09:37 PM

the last like 6 times i went to get mine cut, my specifications were ignored. so now i'm growing it long. i'm never letting someone touch my hair again if their holding sissors.

Macheath 10-14-2003 09:45 PM

I don't like people yakking and gossping as they cut my hair. Which is why I like my barber who has a sign on the mirror which says "Forgive me if I don't engage in inane chit-chat - I'm concentrating on your haircut."

numberfive 10-14-2003 09:58 PM

Wel my barber was my mom for about 5 years. Then my uncle for about 3. Then my mom again for another 10 or so. Now I either go and get it cut by my uncle (low, nice around the edges, nothing special) or if I must go to a barber shop I go to whichever is closest since my demands are easy to meet. They can talk all they want just get my hair cut ASAP and don't leave me with hair all over.

IckUber 10-14-2003 10:04 PM

I shaved my head this summer (big mistake) but it was fun, and i got to take that picture (look left). I normaly just go to the pro-cuts place, or super-cuts. Local or whatev.

anti fishstick 10-14-2003 10:18 PM

i find getting my haircut REALLY annoying and too damn expensive (what's the rate..20$ for a TRIM nowadays??) so i've stopped going. it's been over a year since i last went. i don't like when they try to chit-chat with me. i'm here to get my hair cut. and you're here to cut my hair! there's no need for small annoying banter. but what i hate the most is the misinterpretation they ALWAYS get when you're trying to explain to them what you want. "i just want a trim" means 2 inches.. *3* at most.. NOT 5!!!

i like to style my hair a lot and so what i have 'visioned' in my head is best transformed in my head.. and NO ONE ELSES. they never get it right. last time, i tried to explain to the lady that i wanted a short angular style with a tapered layered off effect in the back and she practically gave me a BOWL CUT.

i cut my own hair. i'm the only one who knows exactly what i want and how to get it. i'm lucky bcos i have bathroom cabinet mirrors that fold out on both sides so i can see all angles of my hair and just start chopping ^_^

i probably need to cut my hair again.. i'm getting anxious about it. but i want to grow it out. so i have to endure the 'ugly stage'. arg

lordjeebus 10-14-2003 10:23 PM

"half of what it is now" -- only once have I had a problem with these words.

mattevil 10-14-2003 10:53 PM

chit chat is bad at the barber but definetly worse at he dentist.
so how are you today?
blime bla rakh!

The same woman has been cutting my hair since I was 15..... and I'm 35 now, perfect cut every time :D

ARTelevision 10-15-2003 03:25 AM

sus cuts my hair.
she's a bit of a perfectionist when she does it and is always real careful...holds back a little.
so last time I asked her to just cut it all off.
mistake.
oh well, it's growin' back.

homerhop 10-15-2003 04:03 AM

Bald is beautiful, I shave it all off.

I shave the scalp and keep the beard - just how much much depends on my mood, usually at least a goatee.

nash 10-15-2003 04:44 AM

For the last 2 years or so, I've been shaving my head most of the time with the clippers. Not bic-ing it though, because that's way too much trouble. Which is exactly why I shave my head. So either that, or I get a friend to cut my hair. As long as it's free and doesn't require effort on my part, I don't really care. But do I like having my head shaved? Not especially. Oh well.

jimk 10-15-2003 05:13 AM

i have a hard time remembering to make haircut appointments, so i've developed a strategy of going to spanish speaking beauty salons (i no habla).

they seem happy to get the walk-in biz, i don't have to chit-chat with anyone, and it's cheap.

G5_Todd 10-15-2003 05:18 AM

skin on the sides faded to the top.....and im not to picky on the top......

stinkynutz 10-15-2003 05:39 AM

i got a haircut appointment today. i've been using the same person for over a year.

she washes my hair twice, while applying different lotions to it and massaging and all that good stuff. she never uses a trimmer - only scisors. trimmer is only used to edge my sideburns.

oh...and she's a hot, late 20's south-american girl. reallly nice.

I live it up to her as to what needs to be done. i just tell her that i want it short, then she styles it a certain way. looks good every time, i never complain.

the whole process is rather pricy. definately more than i'd really like to pay for a haircut. but the outstanding service makes it woth it to me. :)

Midlandmadman 10-15-2003 06:28 AM

The last time I got my haircut by a so-called professional was 1984. He was the Army barber. since that point... I figured I could cut hair with clippers. So, now every 2 or 3 weeks I get out the clippers cut off all my hair.... there you go. Speaking of which... I think after bowling tonight I'll cut my hair.

Lunchbox7 10-15-2003 06:39 AM

I always go to a male. I have never had a woman cut my hair well. I just dont think women know how to cut mens hair.

On a simliar topic. I usually have long hair. At the start of the year it was half way down my back. I was going out with a girl at the time. She had been pressuring me for months to cut it short. I finally gave in and cut it. 3 weeks later she dumped me. How horrible is that? If she was having doubts about the relationship she shouldnt have asked that. Its not like I can just turn around the next day and say "I think Ill have long hair today". It was a pretty bitchy thing to do.

jvwgtr 10-15-2003 06:54 AM

I hate going to the barber/hair salon.
I hate it like most people hate going to the dentist.
Usually, the stylist, reeking of cigarettes, asks me what I want, and if I'm not specific enough, she gets pissy.
It's expensive, and I'm usually not happy with the cut, even though I'm not very picky.
Then there's the awkward tipping thing.
I started cutting my own hair with a cheapo set of clippers a few years ago...and I've given myself some pretty bad haircuts, but at least I have no one to blame but myself, and I save a lot of cash.

Gortexfogg 10-15-2003 06:54 AM

I'll usually go to the plain old barber shop for a haircut. It's cheap and they do a good job. But if my hair has grown pretty wild or I have some extra cash I'll stop by the beauty salon for a cut. Not only do they do an awesome job, but they massage your head and all that stuff. It's worth the extra money.

Ouch! A regular haircut here in New Zealand costs from $10-20 NZ, ie. about $5-10 US. Hell, if they were that expensive here, I'd cut it myself and tough shit if it looked crap.

I get mine cut to a number 7 on top/6 round the sides every 3-4 months or so. My hairdresser (a chick) usually just uses scissors and comb. Does a good enough job for me.

dnd 10-15-2003 07:23 AM

don't use barbers, go to hairdressers, get shampooed, conditioned, hair treatment, head massage and then hair styled/cut never to short. Young girl does my hair, and has been for the last 2 years now. She does a great job (i think) and she has the most beautiful smell! costs around £20 which i think is about $35 but its worth the pampering.

that's a little over $33 dollars in the U.S. thta's way to expensive for me and my $10 haircuts at the salon with shampoo and everything.

Conclamo Ludus 10-15-2003 07:47 AM

I have a hot gal that I've known for about 10 years cut my hair everytime. And she'll be cutting it forever. You can't beat consistency when it comes to your hair.

bermuDa 10-15-2003 08:02 AM

I go to great clips. it's about as cheap as you can get, they don't chat at you, and they have numbers for the lengths on the sides, so all you have to say is "give me a 5 or a 5.5 on the sides" and specify how much you want off the top. Usually I start with 3/4 of an inch, but i almost always take off another 1/4 to 1/2 inch. the also ask before attacking the sideburns, and ask whether you want rounded or squared in the back. Then they'll rinse out your hair if you ask (which is good cause I hate having loose hair clippings around, even after the rinse I still go home and shower), and it's all 12 bucks with 1 or 2 for a tip.

I used to go to this old japanese guy who was pretty good and I really didn't mind chatting with him. My father used to take me there all the time and he was like an extended member of the family... Maybe I should go there for my next haircut, I haven't seen him in a few years (inconveniently located and weird hours)

shalafi 10-15-2003 08:28 AM

ive been going to my barber for around 10 years or so....however long ive been back in fl. when i was in orlando for a year or so i tried a couple places up there but ended up driving an hour and a half back down here to see gene for my haircuts. how difficult is #1 on the sides and leave me just enough to comb on the top? one time when gene was out of town i went to someone else and he put some kind of crap in my hair when he was done. now i just wait for him to get back. $7 gets my haircut, shave around the ears, and 30 seconds or so of the back massager vibraty thing.

if you want just a basic haircut you cant go to a salon. stylists dont know the first thing about a regular haircut and they will rape you on the charge. if your needs are simply you have to find an old man whos been cutting hair since christ was a corpral. then again if you want your hair styled that old guy is the last one you want to go see.

i also find it amusing that a trim for a chick will cost at least double what they charge at the same place for a guys haircut.

Am I the only one who am picturing a mother with multiple sex-changes?

quadro2000 10-15-2003 10:13 AM

I currently pay $12 to get my hair cut by a barber in downtown NYC. It's not always the best cut but it does the trick. I'd love to get a haircut with more "style" but it's so difficult to find somebody that does a good job and doesn't cost a fortune.

Speed_Gibson 10-15-2003 07:56 PM

just purchased a Remington Microflex 9100 for my scalp today - finally decided to give the electric way a try. feels so much easier and faster than the mach 3/whatever else before razors I have been using the past 7 or eight years, and a decent deal for $35.

powder 10-15-2003 07:58 PM

I gotta get my hair cut by a chick. My current hairdresser hangs her boobies in my face while she is leaning over me washing my hair. When she askes if I need my hair washed I always say yes :D

Moreland 10-16-2003 11:22 PM

Costs me £3:50 to have my hair cut, and I have a number 2 back and sides and a short fringe. Takes about 10min. Hairdressers gossip and I ignore. Everybodies happy and I go away once a month/2 months and I look decent.

one hairdresser has big bobbies and tends to rest them on my shoulders ;)

haha - this reminds me of a cartoon i saw once at a barber i used to go to...

´i´m in a hurry this morning barber.
i´d like all three short...¨

¨all three sir?¨

¨yes, the hair, the beard and the conversation.¨

i used to get a $5 dollar haircut all the way through school.
but since then they raised to price to $10.
so that put me off that place.
around that same time, i decided that it was high time i became metrosexual, so on two occasions i forked out about $70 for haircuts and styles. these haircuts were way too extensive, but the treatment was grand... i mean, french champagne (normally enough to win me over to anything), massages and pretty hair assistants...

after the second expensive haircut, i decided that i couldn´t afford that anymore, so i now attend a local place and pay about $15.

phredgreen 10-17-2003 12:49 AM

okay. so up until my last haircut i was a regular at joe's barbershop. joe's one of those guys who has been around for so long he used to trim moses's beard. anyways, they have 5-6 regular cutters, including joe. now he's a sweet man and god bless him for going for all of these years, but my five months of growing the top of my head out long were destroyed by the old gob. i'm shooting for something tikki-ish (check his webcam), but the hair on the sides and back of my head grow exponentially faster than the hair on the top of my head. i'm sorely tempted to just let it be for six months before taking it to any kind of cutter, but i just hate the feeling of it on my neck. i'm gonna invest in a trimmer pretty soon and have my girlfriend do that action, but until then, i'm left hangin.

vermin 10-17-2003 04:55 AM

Wife bought a pet clipper last spring. Essentially the same kind of electric clipper a barber uses. It came with three plastic clip on attachments of varying size to leave a certain length of hair after raking it over your pet. Good enough for me. Haven't paid for a hair cut since last March.

Averett 10-17-2003 05:32 AM

I used to go to my Aunt for the longest time, but she pretty much cuts old ladies hair all day long. I wanted to go to another salon for a change, so I now go to a more expensive place.. I like it, but I'm almost never satisfied with my haircut. I just hate my hair basically. I grow it out, then stupidly decide to get some layers put in it. Then I have to look stupid for months while it grows out again. Ack.

If I just get a haircut it's around $45-50 with tip. If I get highlights (another stupid decision) it's around $130.

tj2001cobra 10-17-2003 06:00 AM

I've been going to the same place since I was a little kid. It started with a guy cutting it when I was little (he did my dad's hair as well) and then he left and a lady took over. She has probably been cutting it for 15 years now.

I got one yesterday and it cost me $25 (tip included). She shampoos, conditions, massages, cuts, shampoos, styles.

I love the pampering and I never have to tell her what I want. She just does it.

Oh, and did I mention she set me and my wife up on our first date? We got married about 2 weeks ago :D

sapiens 10-17-2003 06:12 AM

I cut my own hair with clippers. It saves a lot of money and I like how it looks. I tried shaving my head with a bic over the summer. Bad idea! Too many irregularities on my head resulting in many nicks on my scalp!

absorbentishe 10-17-2003 06:19 AM

I have my own pair of clippers, and tend to do it myself, number 2, all year round. Once in a while, I can get my wife to do it, but it takes her like an hour (not really, but it seems like it) to cut it. I do it once a month.
