Driver 'had no chance'

Quote:

BRAMPTON -- A man was killed yesterday after his SUV collided with two trucks and burst into flames. The identity of the man, who was trapped inside the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, will be confirmed through dental records and released after his family is notified.

Peel Const. Wendy Sims said the Jeep was travelling east when a westbound rig suddenly crossed the median on Steeles Ave. west of Hwy. 50 at 6:50 a.m.

She said the Jeep spun and was hit by an eastbound five-tonne panel truck. The panel truck was then hit head-on by the tractor.

The SUV landed on the driver's side in the south ditch and burst into flames.

Two men in the five-tonne truck, aged 21 and 24 years old, were shot through the front windshield of their vehicle, suffering multiple injuries, including broken bones. They were conscious when they were taken to Etobicoke General Hospital.

Police said their conditions improved greatly as the day progressed.

The 46-year-old Toronto tractor-trailer driver walked away unhurt from his demolished and twisted rig, which landed on its side.

"We don't know if the impact or the fire killed the driver," Sims said of the SUV victim.

The man was burned beyond recognition, she said.

"He had no chance," Sims said. "This was horrific. Nobody deserves to die like that."

There were no skid marks on the road before the impact point and police are unsure where the tractor-trailer cab crossed the centre line, she said.

Police were surprised only one person, associated with the two men in the panel truck, stopped after the accident. Although there were numerous calls made to emergency services, passersby didn't stop to speak with police.

Traffic investigators relied on the rig driver to give them an idea of the sequence of events, but investigators don't yet know why the rig crossed the centre line.

No charges have been laid at this point in the investigation

I read this in todays paper, You should have seen the truck...I am amazed that one of the truck drivers walked away from this accident.

It just sounds so horrific the way the accident was explained in the article. Getting hit by one truck would suck...But then getting hit by another one....

Thats awful and I hope he died in the impact otherwise it would have been a horrible death.

Thoughts with his family :(

Kaos 10-08-2003 01:30 PM

Sounds horrific, and I am willing to bet that the driver of the Rig fell asleep, and that's why there wasn't any skid marks. The guy wasn't awake to hit the brakes.

masses of metal and glass.... add velocity...add stupid drivers...or distracted drivers...takes just one second.

A shock indeed. I can't imagine NOT stopping if this had happened in front of me.

My condolences to the family.

I hope some other external cause for the accident can be found, or the 'guilty' driver will feel this burden forever...

I just don't understand how someone can just drive on after watching the accident unfold in front of them. Cold hearted bastards.

taog 10-08-2003 10:15 PM

i bet the rig driver did fall asleep... he for sure messed up somewhere... they work long ass hours though... so it's not too much of a surprise

The thing that got me is the whole fact that it's in the paper already... they don't know who the man was, but he was probably going to be home that night... so if he has a family, they will read that their father/husband or whoever died in an insane car accident in a paper, rather than having someone contact them.. i would rather not read it in a paper

some things should just be left out of the papers until actions are taken

also

I am pretty sure but not positive that if you witness an accident and leave the scene you can be charged with a very hefty fine.

Ok now lets not get carried away... I don't think the firemen and police men and the ambulance drivers want to weave in and out of a bunch of cars that all stop to help. If you're on an express way this would be a very bad problem.

I think if there is a chance you can help... like your a doctor or you just happen to have some "jaws of life" in your trunk to help cut people outta burning cars. Sure Stop. If you cant do anything but be in the way of professionals.... keep going, and call 911 on your cell phone.

What really sucks is that a lot of people do stop, but only to rubberneck.

I agree with midlandmadman that too many people stopping would be bad, but if I saw it happen and there was no one else around i would stop

Shit happens. Driving is a dangerous activity. The fact that witnesses do not stop is a symptom of a fuct society.

Living in a highly industrial area I see 18 wheel truck accidents daily. I wish someone would address the real issue and find a better and safer way to transport goods. Those trucks are too large and the drivers drive too far for too long. Yes there are laws that say they cannot drive for more than 18 hours at a time but there are ways around that and some of the trucking companies encourage their drivers to do drive as long as possible.

I am not against the trucking industry at all, I just think there is a better way to do it.

One Idea I have been tossing around is smaller lighter trucks designed more aerodynamically and closer to the ground. The truck needs to be all one piece to stop jack knifing and trailer load loss. Each truck should have two drivers one rests while the other drives. No Cross state truck driving! This is why we have trains. Drivers should be regional not owned by the company that needs good transported unless they have all local drivers. The local company/driver picks up his load from the train and delivers it in state (tri-state or metropolitan).

I know this would not prevent all accidents and does not account for everything but could help a lot.

What do you think?

Dano069 10-10-2003 11:38 AM

I hope the driver died from the impact. Burning to death is most unpleasant.

We had an accident like that near here on I-90. Vehicles were approaching a toll booth and one driver didn't slow down in time. He hit another big rig and then a small tour bus. 8 people were killed. Tragic.

G5_Todd 10-11-2003 06:18 AM

i cant stop to help or give a statement....i might be late for work........

people need to get there priorities in order.....

A friend of mine was hit by an oncoming truck, on the wrong side of the road. His car rolled, fell off a verge and landed upside down. He spent about 2 months in hospital, and now has no front teeth, and most of his head/neck is supported by metal plates, he is really screwed up. Thing is, the OKish person in the car next to him was the only person to call an Ambulance on her cell. The car was in full view of hundreds of people driving past, and not one of them thought to pull over and phone an ambulance. Not having a phone is no excuse, they are every few hundred yards on the motorways.

skysooner 10-12-2003 02:23 PM

I have visions of myself dying in a car accident. I guess it is my irrational fear. This was a bad picture in my head.
