I've always thought that the whole 'jackalope' animal was a myth.
I've always thought that the elephant-nosed shrew was very strange. http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/hall...imens/a899.jpg http://artedi.ebc.uu.se/course/BioIn...hant_shrew.gif |
Behold the scariest creature to ever take residence upon our Earth.

Wow I think Shpoop has it with that star nosed mole... I thought about putting a regular mole up because of thier huge hand but that nose is something else.
ps. thanks for the help Fremen |
Star nosed mole what in Gods name? We have a winner.
Asta!! |
.
The angel fish is the weirdest so far.
|
It's not an angel fish...angel fish are pretty that one is an Angler Fish.
Angel Fish http://www.aquanaut.com/images/misc/angelfish.gif Angler Fish http://www.mailsbroadcast.com/zban.deepsea.fish-big.jpg And I think we have a competator for the Star Nosed Mole I give you The Naked Mole Rat http://www.bio.psu.edu/Courses/Fall2...s/image015.gif http://www.bio.psu.edu/Courses/Fall2...s/image013.jpg http://www.moleplace.com/images/NakedMoleRat-s160.jpg I can't really decide which is weirder between the two. One looks weird as all hell.......and the other looks like a freakin walking penis. You be the judge. Asta!! |
I dunno, if you think about it, the naked mole rat is just like a mole sans hair, whereas the star nosed mole... well fuck, that ones just plain wierd.
|
Point noted.
Asta!! |
theres also this one that i didnt post, becuase its small and doesnt look weird, but it is born with a brain that it uses to go find a nesting spot, then sticks itself in the ground and eats its brain. (its aquatic, called the sea squirt)
|
OK, you've all posted some rather odd LOOKING creatures, but the platypus is still the most bizarre.
As far as I know it's completly unclassifyable by todays standers. Mammels are worm blooded and have hair and give live birth. Platypus are warm blooded, have hair, and LAY EGGS. Birds have feathers, beaks, lay eggs and have wings. Platypus lay eggs and have beaks but no feathers. Not fish obviously. I'm no expert but that's how I remember what I know about them. Furry, beaks, lays eggs, warm blooded. The only animal I know of that crosses between 2 different genras of animals. |
Ahh yes the infamous sea squirt
http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/...squirt.200.jpg Really cool animal. Very fun to play with I used to squirt my friends with em when we visited the aquarium. Good times. Asta!! |
That star-nosed mole is insane. What's the practical application of that sucker? Where are they found?
|
the pangolin is a scaled mamal, not as weird as that mole though
http://www.americazoo.com/goto/index...nimals/129.jpg http://www.bornfree.org.uk/pangolins/chadenga.JPG |
That ones pretty good. Looks like a mini dinosaur. Is it related to the armadillo in any way?

the platypus and two species of echidna (spiny anteater). http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/...me/echidna.jpg To add to the list of wierd characteristics, the platypus is the only mammal to produce its own venom. The male has a poisonous spur on each rear leg that injects the toxin. While not known to be lethal to humans, a jab will put one in hospital. The platypus gets my vote for the weirdest. Actually I think he's just proof that God has a sense of humor. That was my reason for taking it as a nik. |
Come on people, you gotta know what an Echidna is, isn't Knuckles (from Sega's "Sonic the Hedgehog") an Echidna?
Thanks for the extra info... Platypus. LOL. I don't beleive in God so I'd say animals from outter space, brought when the aliens visited the Egyptians or the Druids who made stonehedge... OK so that's a bit absurd so maybe just a fluke in the evolution chain. |
Yeah Knuckles was an Echidna. I've known about em since 3rd grade. Thought they were cool but they aren't exactly the most popular animals too. Anytime anyones ever seen em they prolly think they're a hedgehog or a porcupine. Even my dad didn't know what they are. I think you two are probably right given the rather unique features/characteristics of the animal perhaps such an animal more bizzare than it doesn't exist.
Asta!! |
Jellyfish always freaked me out, and other animals of the sea. Deep down you get into the incredibly wierd stuff, it's like an alien world there.
|
^^ This is true. Lord knows how big the lampreys get down there. They say the deeper ya go the bigger they(aquatic animals) get or something. Everytime I see Deep Rising I think...."hmm..could happen" Scary thought.
Asta!! |
what are these critters?
|
They look like Red Pandas to me.
More info here: http://www.thebigzoo.com/Animals/Red_Panda.asp http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/6.shtml Edit: actually they have really huge eyes which red pandas don't seem to have, it might just be because they're young though. |
|
http://www2.worldbook.com/features/r...s/pc314200.jpg
http://graphicstock.com/graphicstock...ned-lizard.jpg It may not look all that weird, but squirting blood out of it's eyes as a defense mechanism is certainly strange. Properly called a horned lizard, they're also known as horned frogs or horney toads, and their numbers are dwindling, thanks to the introduction of Fire Ants and subsequent downfall of native red ants. |

sloths!
those things dont move from branches for weeks on end so much so that there's a type called 'green sloths' coz algae grows on their fur as they dont move at all and stay in the shade |
Hi,
Fish don't come much wierder than those that live in the deep sea. Behold: http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/ships/images/ship3089.jpg http://www.imagequest3d.com/catalogu...s/v001_tif.jpg http://warrensburg.k12.mo.us/ocean/anglerfish.jpeg http://www.calstatela.edu/faculty/ev...y/poarfish.gif http://www.calstatela.edu/faculty/ev...ty/pgulper.gif And the ever-frightening fish of my nightmares, the Viperfish http://www.imagequest3d.com/pages2/s...ages/viper.jpg What makes most of these fish even weirder is the bioluminescence used by their bodies. Oh, and did you know that angler fish males are about a centimeter long and live permanently attached to a female Angler fish, which feeds it it's entire life? Thanks, Manga |
animal lovers...
in our quest to find the strangest beasts, how could we have overlooked the humble BAT...? these truly strange beasts come in many forms... but today i want to focus on the GHOST BAT. here is a Honduran Ghost Bat... http://www.earthsbirthday.org/explor.../ghostbat1.jpg here is an Australian Ghost Bat... http://www.amonline.net.au/bats/reco...thompson14.jpg note the large ears and noses that aid the echolocation that they use in conjunction with their keen eye-sight to catch their prey. http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/bat-2.jpg some species hang from trees... http://www.earthsbirthday.org/explor.../ghostbat4.jpg but most live in large colonies in dark, cool, moist surrounds of caves... http://www.utexas.edu/depts/tnhc/.ww...ogy/clife3.jpg these next two are some of the stranger species of ghost bats... first, the Peter Ghost-Faced Bat... http://www.bonairenature.com/bats/im...alophylla6.jpg http://www.psych.ualberta.ca/~msnyde...k8/ghostfc.gif and the Greater Bulldog Bat... http://www.bonairenature.com/bats/im...nus7helder.jpg |
