Florida MAO needs TFPer's help

It's the last day of the Mu Alpha Theta state competition (read, math club) and we've been stumped by several questions on an interschool test. We're allowed the use of the internet, and given such, could think of no place better than to seek help than the great TFP forum. The answers are due tomorrow, 2 PM EST, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you're able, and willing, to solve any problems, please inculde their explanations. Thanks, and keep on truckin'....

1. What 5-degree latitude band in the worlnd has the most national capitals in it. I'm looking for an answer with bounds that are multiples of 5, i.e. 30 to 35 N, 20 to 25 S.
(We don't have a map so this would be very helpful.)

3. In the current version of the T.V. game show Jeopardy, what is the most money a contestant can win in one single game? (Currently the minimum question value for Jeopardy round is $200 and the minimum for Double Jeopardy is $400.0

4. What is the worst a contestant can do in Jeopardy?

7. A teacher instructs her class at the beginning of a semester that she will give four tests during the semester with integer grades on each ranging from a 0 to a 100. She also says that she will drop the lowest test grade for each student. Can this dropping of the lowest test grade ever hurt a student's grade. A yes or a no response is sufficient for the answer to this question.

11. What is the next number in the following sequence?
93, 993, 7510, 58209,

20. Boolean algrebra question: Given that F = A B + C + D + E, which of the following represents the only correct expression for F?(Write the number corresponding to the correct answer.)

23. What is the diameter of the sphere that circumscribes the tetrahedron whose vertices are (4, 5, 5), (2,8,1), (7,7,2)
(4,4,0)?

39. Given a nominal interest rate of 8% per annum, compounded continuously, what is the effective interest rate? (given to the nearest hundredth of a percent)

42. What is the value of cos(2003!)

44. The hands of a clock make a certain angle (<180 degrees) at 2:53 PM. What time will it be when the hands of the clock first make an angle twice as big?

45. If it takes 6 seconds for a grandfather clock to strike 6 PM, then how many seconds will it take it to strike 12 PM.

3) Best can do in jeopardy: $352,800

Why?
Daily double 200 200 200 200 200
400 400 400 400 400 400
600 600 600 600 600 600
800 800 800 800 800 800
1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000

Daily double Daily double 400 400 400 400
800 800 800 800 800 800
1200 1200 1200 1200 1200 1200
1600 1600 1600 1600 1600 1600
2000 2000 2000 2000 2000 2000

Total everything in round one, then double it with the Daily Double. Remember that a 200 dollar question is a daily double. If you use a question that is worth more than 200, then you are not winning as much money.

Then Total everything in double jeopardy. Double it twice with the two daily doubles. Remember that two 400 dollar questions are daily doubles. If you use questions that are worth more than 400 for a daily double, then you are losing money (like using two 2000 dollar questions for daily doubles).

Then double it all in final jeopardy

cos(2003!) is 1

For the clock chime, I think it's 14. If six seconds elapse between the first chime and the last, there is one every 1 and 1/6 second, so it would take 14 seconds to complete 12 chimes.

Worst score in Jeopardy, -56000
17800 in first round, 35200 in second, minus a maximum wager of 1000 if you're in the hole. INo final jeopardy if you're in the hole unless you're playing for charity. 'm not positive on the max bet in the hole, so you might want to double-check it.

And if the rules lawyers want tomess with the most money question, the most a contestant can win is $100,000. Any more than that goes to charity.

Unless other grades are involved, I see no way that dropping the lowest score can hurt the student's grade.

Yes, dropping the lowest score CAN hurt a student's final grade.
(If you don't want to believe me, I'm a teacher, and I've seen this first-hand.)

In no way should it hurt a students grade, if the grade is determined by 3 of the tests (with the lowest test being dropped). Hurt beind defined as having a total score lower on the average of the 3 tests compared to the 4 tests.

I want to thank everyone who helped us in this test. We were able to score in the top 10 out of about 70 schools (for this test) and overall our school came in 15 place. W
