The wind and rain started picking up here at about 1:00, when I was on my way back to the office from our hosting facility. Wild! Half the traffic lights were out between here and there--and people were driving like total idiots!

At about 2:00, lurkette called from home to say that the big dead tree in our backyard that we've been worrying about fell down--away from the house, fortunately. She was a little antsy about us being in different places, what with falling trees and big wind and the world ending and all, so I came home from work at about 2:45.

The moment I stepped through the door of my house, the power went out.

At about 8:00 the wind started calming down and the dozen or so candles we'd lit started filling our living room with a warm romantic glow. lurkette and I snuggled on our comfy chair to the buzz of NPR and the local news on our transistor radio. We went to bed at about 9:30 (not much else to do) and woke up this morning to a still-powerless house. Fortunately, both of our offices still have juice.

Nothing happened here in southwest VA like I thought.. just a lot of rain and wind.

I talked to my mom back in Richmond VA and she said that Interstate 64 was flooded, the winds were horrible, and trees were falling over everywhere. She never lost power but she said the lights were flickering for a very long time.

My roommate talked to his parents that live in Hampton, VA (right near the beach). They said that they had 0 problems, but there was a tree that got uprooted at the house across from them that took out the side of that house!

Home has been without power since about 2:30 am. The only property damage I've had is that one of my Garbage can lids is MIA. I figure it's in Schenectady by now.

I didn't expect much, but the wind blew harder and for longer than I expected. It did a pretty efficient job of removing the dead branches from the trees around the house and depositing them with a broad distribution throughout my yard. I have a lot of raking and other yardwork to do. We didn't get as much rain, but the wind was pretty impressive.

I didn't hear the long sustained howl that I heard with Fran, though. I think the winds were more gusty and less sustained. That howl was really unnerving, so I am glad I didn't have to listen to it this time.

Only lost power for about 3 hours. In this area that seems like a record. I've spent more time without power in the last 7 years (Fran, snow, ice storms, now Isabel etc.) in NC than my previous 25 years combined. With Fran we were out for 4 days (many others were out for weeks), in the Ice Storm this winter we were out for 3 days (Others had it worse.) Seems excessive, but what do I know.

Of course I parked my car that needs more repair work than it's worth in my driveway to see if Isabel would put it out of it's misery, and save me some trouble. Of course it was untouched.

I don't expect to be able to find my recycle bins when I get home tonight...

UPDATE: Power's still out, more than 24 hours later. Duke Power says they'll have everybody's lights back on by midnight on Sunday.

No problem for me really on the northwest side of the DC beltway. A couple of trees down around the hood and lots of free pruning done to the 3, 80 year old massive oaks tucked onto my 1/4 acre plot. I was somewhat nervous that they might come down on someone else's crib...but alas, I now have complete confidence in all of them.

Lost power from after midnight, and just got it back about an hour ago. Phone and natural gas uneffected.

Isabelled indeed. I have one question for her:

A decent amount of rain, and a little wind for a few hours this morning in Toronto. Definitely nothing to write home about.

All I could do is laugh when our poor receptionist took call after call from our employees asking if we were open this morning. Lazy people make me laugh...

It was more like Fizzabelle here in Jersey. After bunkering down and preparing for the worst (Floyd left four inches of water in my house - and there's a lot more stuff down in that area nowadays), we got less than an inch of rain and just some dead branches blown off trees.

We got off real lucky.

Here in lovely Durham, NC, the power is back on! I'm checking TFP from my kitchen table again, for the first time in about 30 hours.

Today was a gorgeous day, by the way. Clear as a bell, highs in the low 80's. Had the top down on the Miata all day long... Siiiiigh...

Looks like the wind here may have spawned some not-quite tornados.

Lots of fields have swathes of crops that are just gone, or down in big circles, and on one of the hills about a mile from home most of the big trees are down. We got power back about 1pm.

Garbage can lid still MIA. It looks like the little bit of prevention I did with my lawn furniture may have paid off.

DC is still a mess today. Most of the traffic lights are out, lots of trees down everywhere. Coworkers from MD and VA haven't had power since thursday afternoon.

Somehow we have enough power to work though.

Other than that, I noticed one intersection's traffic lights not working.

Over here south of the Beltway we didn't get hit too hard, but the wind did get in excess of 75 mph sustained for awhile, power was out for 24 hours in my neighborhood. Nothing major tho.

The newscasters here made a big deal of it, but when the time came we just got a normal afternoon of rain. I was actually excited and hoping for more.

Well, it came through here (Chapel Hill, NC, right near Raleigh for those not familiar with the area), and honestly, Ive seen worse thunderstorms. I know it was worse elsewhere, but it sure wasnt much to write home about here. I still remember Hugo from when I was a kid (4 years old, IIRC)... Now THAT was a hurricane.

in central maryland, we power flickered a bit and went off for a couple minutes at a time. in other areas power went out for quite a while (and is still off). a friend called me telling me his power went out... to which i laughed.

However whether it be the 'tropical storm' or what not, i've felt pretty sick / tired this weekend. atleast we got off school.. but i think i have a lot due monday...

OK, so it's not up to ART's example but hey, it didn't start out to be a poem. Anyhow, Ratbastid already told what went down in our neck of the woods.

The thing that didn't happen this time was the adoption of a cat. Every inland hurricane so far has brought us a cat. It seems a shame to break with tradition but we're already 1/25 of the way to 50-cat-crazy.

Southern Maryland, so I'm on what Bowditch would call the "Non-navigable side" of the hurricane. Bunch of trees down, some bushes uprooted. I got a day off since OPM cancelled Federal Government for Friday. I thought that silly until I saw how many DC bridges were under water.

I got Isabelled...had to deal with the preparation & consequences for our 24/7 network.
The air went out a work, hot as hell and couldn't breathe.

At home...
Lights went out half a day.
I still can't drink my water
And my ISP went out for the last few days.

It wasn't for everybody ya know. My area got hit pretty hard. A LOT of damage. It was crazy. The wind wasn't that much of a deal (30 mph maybe)as the rain was. It flooded really bad. My cousin lost his house, everything in it, his harley, his cars, and 3 out of 8 of his horses. But him and his wife are ok so that's the good news. It was about 25 min. away from me but the river that caused the flooding there, flows right by my house so I'm in the flood zone too. If it had kept raining for at least another two hours like the news had called for we would have been forced out of our house as well. At around 11:30 that night we took my husbands sports car to his grandmothers house for safe keeping, and kept our suv obviously, incase we had to leave later. They had Mark Warner (govenor or something) visit on Monday to survey all the damage. Oh yeah forgot, I'm from Va. (About four hours from Va. Beach.)
