The attorney for a University of Alaska Fairbanks faculty member accused state prosecutors of grandstanding in portraying his client as running a statewide drug conspiracy.

Prosecutors on Tuesday said Bob Logan, a UAF economics associate professor, undertook a "statewide commercial drug enterprise" that led to charges of selling marijuana to undercover investigators in both Fairbanks and Barrow.

Logan is a tenured faculty member and a former Fairbanks North Star Borough assemblyman.

He was formally charged Tuesday with five counts of felony misconduct involving a controlled substance.

"The defendant (is) alleged to have engaged in a statewide commercial drug enterprise that not only affects the city of Fairbanks, but the community of Barrow as well," said assistant district attorney Danielle Simmons.

Defense attorney Bill Satterberg represented Logan.

"He is charged essentially with alcohol issues in Barrow and marijuana issues in Fairbanks, so when the state says it's a statewide drug conspiracy, I think that's a little bit of grandstanding there," Satterberg said.

Logan faces charges that he sold 6 1/2 ounces of marijuana Monday at a restaurant parking lot.

An undercover trooper paid $2,000 for marijuana taken out of a cooler in Logan's vehicle, according to charging documents. The investigator spotted other plastic bags containing marijuana inside the cooler, according to the complaint.

The complaint charges that Logan flew his Piper Super Cub from Fairbanks to Barrow on Sept. 5 and delivered an ounce of marijuana to an investigator.

Troopers also said Logan sold 60 bottles of liquor in Barrow. Troopers said charges of importing alcohol into a local option area and selling alcohol without a license will be coming out of Barrow.

Troopers arrested Logan on Monday. They later served a search warrant on Logan's home and confiscated 21 marijuana plants, growing equipment, firearms and cash, troopers said.

Prosecutor Simmons sought bail of $20,000. Satterberg argued for $7,500.

"He has been a resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, for well over 10 years," Satterberg said. "The state took his aircraft, took his car and his dog's in the pound right now and needs to be released."

Bail was set at $10,000.

Satterberg told reporters that neither he nor Logan would be making a statement regarding the case.

Logan served on the borough assembly from 1993-96.

The best part is that he let my class out early so that he could go sell $2000 worth of pot!

A recent ruling in the Court of Appeals made it legal to posses less than 4 ounces but it's still illegal to sell.

I had a former dean of the business college that a number of years before decided it was a good idea to sleep with his student secretary. They couldn't fire him outright, so they demoted him and now he teaches............... ethics. Of course.

I went to school in fairbanks and had this Guy as a teacher..
And no it is not leagal to sell drugs to an undercover officer..
Ha Ha on this guy who should have spent his drug money on something other than a plane to smugle more....

Of course he is an Econ professor

My econ professor used to study the crack cocaine markets at my school. I dont think he sold or used it, but he was interested in black markets and how they worked and used to study the cocaine markets here pretty heavily.
