TFP University

THis seems an appropriate tribute, again.
..................................................................

There are quite a few teachers here, many engineers at the top of their fields, scions of industry, and many very highly experienced people. I’ve gotten more knowledge from this site then I have from situations in which I’ve paid for education. I’m sure you have too. Here’s an opportunity to acknowledge some of that and to even voice your gratitude for things you’ve found invaluable in your life and work and play.

What have your experiences been with one of the best online Universities I’ve come across in a long time on the Net?

Loki 04-19-2003 06:12 AM

More reminiscent to what a true university, or a place of learning should be like then anywhere else i have ever seen.

rogue49 04-19-2003 06:43 AM

I'm doing it right now.
Fellow members are trying to assist me with my connection issues.

Crimson 04-19-2003 07:37 AM

It's the way things go with places like this

I hang around on IRC and some of the people I know know so much about Cisco (I am studying for my CCNA) That I find it hard to belive they are human

Or *nix - If you go into any #linux there will be one person who seems to know everything

I guess that is why I like the TFP - I can learn but also I can teach - In the Computing fora I have helped a lot of people - Even with simple things - It just feels good

spectre 04-19-2003 08:07 AM

I've made a lot of friends here who have helped me a lot and taught me many things. I couldn't begin to express how much I appreciate the help that they have given to me.

Peetster 04-19-2003 08:11 AM

This is the only online community I've ever stuck with. You guys are awesome!

phredgreen 04-19-2003 08:16 AM

i think in a learning aspect, i've had the opputunity to experience points of view that are not my own... an invaluable opputunity for anyone who wishes to expand their own horizons. having the opputunity to hear other sides to a story and other opinions gives one the chance to enhance their own.

Lebell 04-19-2003 08:44 AM

I've learned so much here, but to my surprise, it has been about myself.

I am in a debt of gratitude to the wonderful TFP community.

World's King 04-19-2003 11:19 AM

I've learn how to not treat people.

One sometimes forgets how to interact with others when there isn't any one around.

Wile E 04-20-2003 03:56 AM

My overall knowledge of computers has more than doubled from just being on here. I get to try things that I wouldn't have had the chance to otherwise. As soon as I have a problem, an issue, or am just frustrated, I have thousands of friends that are more than willing to share their experience and knowledge, and that alone is priceless.

That is just a minor piece though. I've had the chance to learn great deals about myself, and have been able to watch myself change over time. I had a written journal so to speak, here on the TFP. Not per se one written in the journal forum, but a collaboration throughout the entire TFP. Documented conversations and discussions, that really allowed me to analyze myself. How I reacted to certain things, how my mood was reflected in my responces, etc. It was a truly enlightening experience. I believe that the one sole thing that I will miss about the site going down and losing all of its information, is that I lost my history. I will no longer have a chance to read back, reflect and grow from it. Yes, it is time to move on, but I have learned, the hard way, that one cannot truly move forward without first stepping back.

Gotta love early morning ramblings. Heh.

i8one2 04-20-2003 05:49 PM

people have given me the encouragement to try to learn to write and communicate better. Something 16+ years of education failed to instill in me. here it took less than a year!

Also this is a community and these are real people with real feelings, so always think twice..

sbscout 04-20-2003 05:57 PM

to know I can contribute and also learn...

worthy rewards, I must say!

phoenix1002 04-20-2003 06:30 PM

TFP definitely is a great opportunity to have good discussions. In my one year of college, I have only had two classes where we actually had intellectual debates. Here, I just have to find a thread that interests me. I also learned that just because you can't see someone doesn't mean that they are not there. Early on, I made some pretty flamy posts in the politics area. In retrospect, I probably didn't really know enough about what I was talking about to argue my point well, so it ended up being "No, you're wrong because I don't agree with you!" Now, though, I have learned to think more about what I'm going to say. The one exception to that is when I'm posting at 3 AM... then I'm not thinking about much of anything.

redravin40 04-20-2003 06:53 PM

I have learned a lot of things on TFP.
Incomputers I have learned about ways of getting rid of spyware, nifty apps and programs that are free. And some really funny practical jokes.
In cooking...(I sure miss Jadzia's cooking dictionary) even though I have been a chef most of my life, I learned all kinds of nifty stuff.
On the Lit board, I learned about depths of emotion conveyed in a few words.
Most importantly I learned that you can find love in the strangest of places and that friends come from all over the world.

ARTelevision 06-08-2003 11:38 AM

There are always very cool, talented, literate, creative, expressive, and unique new people who show up on TFP.
"Evolving" is the operative term. We are never the same. This super-organism changes daily!

bullgoose 06-08-2003 12:25 PM

FOOD FIGHT!!!!!!!!!

BentNotTwisted 06-08-2003 02:23 PM

A few years back I tried several different online communities. I know I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I was constantly getting flamed because I couldn't keep up with everyone else's arguments. When I wasn't being flamed I had to read the ones sent to other members. I haven't even been here a week and I can already see that type of dialog doesn't happen here.
On the other hand, since I have started posting here I have recieved feedback to my posts that was insightful, thoughtful and well expressed. I have found an online place to call home.

4thTimeLucky 06-08-2003 02:50 PM

I have far more discussions here than with people at my university - and that is something I value enormously. But I sometimes miss the fact that I can't keep track of too many people's backgrounds or previous positions. You also can't just jump in and assume knowledge, you always have to test the water to find out what other people's level is and help everyone keep up.

gibber71 06-08-2003 03:22 PM

What strikes me is not only the immediacy of the posts but also the straight forwardness and honesty which seemingly prevails. I always wondered if that openness was due to anonymity, but now I'm not that sure.I relate on the TPF like I do in real life(sorry, not that this isn't real life) and I am completely honest in what I say,..maybe even more honest than real life.Go figure. And thanks to you all for making me think even more than I already do.Thank You.

ARTelevision 10-19-2003 07:20 AM

It has been a while since this thread's been responded to and we have a whole new group of good peeple here.

The question remains.

Let us know what sort of educational experience Tilted Forum Project is for you.

oberon 10-19-2003 08:27 AM

I've enjoyed sharing my knowledge with many TFPers, chatting about inane things, and just having a good time. I've enjoyed others' art and learned more about relationships (particularly with women) in a very positive way.

In short, TFP rocks.

I really like that idea. A mental and technological super-organism that is in constant evolution.

I have learned many things here. Not just about things but also about myslef and my own thoughts and feelings. I could never have found that knowledge without TFP so for that I am forever gratefull to Halx's for starting this forum, for the facinating people I have met and interacted with here and last but not least the verry link that sent me here that fateful first time.

Sledge 10-19-2003 04:09 PM

I come here

- when I have a question and no one can answer it
- when I want to chit-chat with people
- when I feel like being cheered up
- when I feel like being pissed off
- for answers
- for news
- for opposing points of view
- for a laugh
- for solidarity

chavos 10-19-2003 06:09 PM

what i appricate most is that the teaching here isn't didactic...but the result of peers sharing their experiences with each other. it feels like when i sit and talk with my friends here at school, only i can choose from such a greater range of conversations.

Ogre840 10-20-2003 03:04 PM

Azh has helped me set up my wireless printer, and also helped me with some spyware stuff. along with Art retelling me a few things that i forgot the command for to go along with spyware.

Cheers and Juan introduced me to Open Office, which i then passed onto my roomates and Spec.

and all have taught me how to get a good laugh.

and Z has taught me, there is never enough porn in the world!!!

yet no one has taught me how to spell good, or use english good, but that can pass, who needs english... most of us live in america!!!

Dibbler 10-20-2003 05:01 PM

This place is the greatest. All the other forums I've been to have like 5 guys who post 100 threads a day and whenever any of the rest of us post we're flamed beyond hope. I don't know what I'd do without some of the help and advice I've gotten from this place. Also, everyone here, so far, have been great!

raeanna74 10-21-2003 06:37 AM

I'd say the biggest area that I've benefited from here at TFP is in religion. I came here at a time where I was already examining my religious upbringing and how that related to real life. I haven't come to a solid conclusion yet and I doubt I ever will since I am constantly growing and learning and changing. There will be a few basic convictions that I won't alter on but otherwise I'm open to discovery.

Here at TFP I have read things that have brought up a lot of questions for me. Given me bits of information and different ideas to consider. I have seen both religious persons and those who are athiest. There is such a variety of beliefs and convictions here that I have had plenty of food for though. Thanks all for sharing.

WhoaitsZ 10-22-2003 12:06 AM

I haven’t ignored this thread; I wanted to do it correctly and after some thought.

I have learned that there are genuine good people left on the net.

I have learned to communicate again. . . and look at my journal. I am as open as possible now.

I have learned that, though it is hard at times, you really can coexist with people you loathe.

I have been reassured that a lot of my writing is good or you guys act v e r y well.

I almost never have a pc question that someone on tfp can’t figure out.

I have learned that cults are hard to start!!

Most of all I’ve learned to believe in humanity again and to better deal with losers.

taliendo 11-21-2003 09:19 PM

I have recently moved and lost all outlets of intelligent conversation. The TFP is what has saved me.

I would like to thank everyone on here for keeping my mind from turning a pile of cold porridge. Again, thank you -- I value your words, your minds, and your gifted writing.

thank you.

ARTelevision 11-22-2003 05:38 AM

Occasionally new and fine voices and viewpoints rise to the surface here. They make it better for all of us. Thanks to you relative newcomers who are contributing solid and well-wrought posts. We're continuing to be what we've hoped we could become.

analog 11-22-2003 11:11 AM

The TFP allows me to write freely and openly about topics that concern me, and allows me to be of help to those who can benefit from it. I learn a little more every day, and all this reading and writing is great for my craft (I'm a writer). The blend of opinions and styles of speech and thoughts and ideas gives me fresh insight on a constant basis. Best. Site. Ever.

krazykemist 11-22-2003 03:43 PM

Whenever I come here I am gauranteed to learn something.
Whether it's the Wisdom of Art, a New Face of Phred, the Courage of a new member to the Exhibition forum, the Knowledge of those Computer techs, or the World's according to the King, I appreciate every bit of it. I have yet to have an unanswered question after consulting the TFP community. A more diverse group of knowledgeable people I have never found. Many thanks to all here who have helped and will help in the future.

wilbjammin 11-22-2003 03:56 PM

This is the only online forum I've ever been to that I feel like the conversations are actually meaningful. I'm challenged to think, everyone is respectful and thoughtful. I enjoy coming here more than my graduate classes because that classic scenario of the stupidest people in the class dominating the discussion doesn't happen here. There tends to be an unwillingness in classes for respectful disagreement, but here people disagree with me and it is fine. I have been going crazy looking for opportunities to think about new things other than pop culture and the mundane aspects of life. TFP has really given an opportunity for me to dig deeper into myself and help me grow.

lordjeebus 11-22-2003 06:21 PM

The TFP successfully channels the collective consciousness and intellect of its members while paring away the flames and repetitiveness that destroys similar efforts elsewhere. Unlike a physical university, the TFP attracts those who seek to consider the world for the sake of their own intellectual advancement.

I care about what the members of the TFP have to say.
The TFP cares about what I have to say.
We care about each-other's well-being.
Whenever such a relationship forms, only good can come of it.

skier 11-22-2003 07:32 PM

It just goes to show you how learning is not about marks and test scores. TFP gives me so much that most people need to learn the hard way, trial and error. By sharing your thoughts, experiences, and feelings, you guys have taught me more about life than i ever could have learned in high school. I hope this community remains strong and vibrant to the end of days.

WarWagon 11-22-2003 10:29 PM

I think what make TFP the best place of learning is that you can learn about subject matter here that simply isnt taught or deemed appropriate elsewhere. Its members are willing to listen and educate about anything, and its easier to be a student in that you dont face the pressures of meeting these educators in person on a daily basis.

xepherys 06-15-2008 09:07 AM

<3 TFP for it's knowledge value.

I've learned everything from new recipes, to what video card to buy (just ask Lasereth), to who the hottest porn star of the moment is... uhm... well, it's STILL knowledge! :p
