JANESVILLE, Wis. - To track down this alleged thief, all police had to do was flick on a computer.

A 40-year-old man was arrested Wednesday and charged with stealing a computerized tracking device that uses a global positioning system to keep track of jail prisoners on home detention.

"He apparently didn't know what he had because he would be awfully stupid to steal a tracking device," said correctional officer Thomas Roth, who runs the home detention program at the Rock County Jail.

The $2,500 device was temporarily placed outside a home by a woman serving home detention. The device, which is a little bigger than a brick in size, has a built-in GPS satellite receiver.

Prisoners wear a transmitter about as big as a cigarette pack on the ankle, and it acts as a 100-foot tether to the portable tracking device.

By the time the prisoner called to report the theft Monday night, the device had automatically notified the jail that it had been taken outside the prisoner's home area.

Roth then tracked the device through the Internet on his home computer.

A trail of electronic dots led authorities to an apartment building, where the suspect was captured.

Or the guy who robbed the candy store and the police followed the empty wrappers to his house.

Bank robber demands money.
Teller hands him the money.
Just as the robber starts to leave, the teller reminds him that he has to sign for the money.
And he does.

We had one up here where a guy robbed a porn store.
He couldn't get the cash register open and the cashier ducked out the back so he he took the cash register.
The thief didn't live too far away so he walked home with the register, not noticing that the roll of register tape had come un-spooled.
The police just followed that tape to his house.

The crook who robbed the bank to find his getaway car wouldn't start. So to get help he runs into the builiding next the bank, the police station.

The crook who enters the bank and wrote the hold up note on a withdrawal slip. The line in the bank was too long so he went across the street to another bank where he was informed that the withdrawal slip was invalid because it was from the wrong bank. So he went back across the street to the other bank and got in line, while the teller from the second bank called the police.

I think every city has the story of the crook running from the cops at night wearing shoes that light up when you step
