You gotta love the Y'all.
|
Just read a trivial pursuit question:
What's the plural of "y'all" according to some Texas guide book? "Ally'all." |
Never hear it or use it around here..ever. It always made me think the person was kind of uneducated. I may have to change my way of thinking judging by all the people that use it here on the TFP...
I can honestly say that I'll never say y'all in a conversation. |
I'll add my agreement: "y'all" is a great piece of language.
|
I can understand why people don't use it or don't feel comfortable using it because they didn't grow up with it (myself included), but I don't understand the elitist attitude. It's just a natural progression of language in light of English not recognizing the second person plural. If one were to use "y'all" or "youse" in a second person singular context , then I agree, that sounds uneducated.

ya'll is a great word

I never really started saying ya'll until My kids got older.... they are 6 (almost 7) and 3. I am always saying ya'll need to quiet down!!!! Ya'll stop hitting each other!!!! Ya'll better sit down!!!!
It never stops................. |
Y'all is good, Yu'uns is also good but in the words of Jeff Foxworthy my favorite southern word is SENSUOUS... as in sensuous up, get me a beer.
My wife is from Newfoundland and if she is talking about more than 1 person, like her Mom and Dad, she'll say Mom n'em( "Mom and them" very fast) |
See Location :)

I've used it all my life. Hell, I use it in chat rooms and on message boards without even thinking about it it's so engrained in my vocabulary. The only places I don't use it are formal letters and such that require a more prefessional English. It's not that I see y'all as unprofessional, but the wording most of the time prevents the use of it in those situations and some people do see it as an uneducated word.
