7-Year-Old Shot In Head As She Sits On Front Porch In Chicago

CHICAGO -- A 7-year-old girl was critically wounded early Wednesday when she was shot in the head as she sat on a porch in the 2300 block of West 18th Place, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight, and police said the apparently stray bullet may have been fired from several blocks away. The girl was sitting on the front porch with her mother at the time of the shooting.

Police said they were looking for several males who were seen by witnesses fleeing the scene in what appeared to be a dark-colored Ford Crown Victoria.

It's a shame. A kid can't even sit on the porch with their parent now a days.

That is a shame. Unfortunately, that seems to happen way too often.

It sucks. Thats a given. But it does happen waay too often. Thats why I say we should cut back handgun use and production. And destroy them when they confiscate them.

Here is something we can discuss. Why is a 7 year old up after midnight? I can damn well guarantee you that my kid wont be up that late.

i have a hard time with the cosmic justice (???) of a story like this. i have spent 20 years of my life immersed in booze & pills & powders, passively trying to kill myself. i get to go to rehab & start over, but that little chick takes a bullet for sitting on the stoop.

Well, maybe she couldn't sleep, and she decided to look at the stars or something...

It's friggen sick that stray bullets from these "gangsters" kill kids like that.

Ya got to wonder how many "stray" bullets there are to even out the bad odds of this kind of thing happening. What do you figure? 10,000 20,000 bullets fired off that just damage inanimate objects for every one that hits a person. Then times that by four or five to get the odds of hitting a child and not an adult.

We are coming up on the closest aproach of mars in 60,000 years on the 27th. Maybe she was looking at a once in thousand life times event.

I don't think the odds are that extreme. The gunners aren't shooting for fun, they are trying to kill someone. Children tend to be around adults. If someone is spraying a wild volley of shots at someone who is in proximity of a child, the chance of one striking is likely pretty high.

That is terrible, my condolences go out to the mother. :(
