My Aussie wife has referred to me (jokingly, I think) as a Seppo.
It's the colorful Aussie (or Cockney) Rhyming slang. Seppo is short for Septic Tank, which rhymes with Yank.

People generally just shake their heads, with a sad little smile, while saying "Americans..."

I tend to use Seppo most of the time. It's Yank if I'm in particularly refined company. (By the way, Southerners, please don't be offended, but to us, you're all yanks as well)

Thanks, phred, that about does it for me too. Personally, I think "infidel" has a nice ring to it.

I've heard a lot of terms used to describe Americans...! Most of the terms referring to the tourists in the LOUD quasi-Burberry check trousers & pink Pringle sweaters who parade annually around central Edinburgh trying to "prove" their Scottish roots by picking up some of their "Clan" Tartan.
At times it almost seemed a shame to tell them that there was NO clan "MacSchwartzenburger"... So one enterprising guy modelled what constitutes "Tartan" and now produces some very authentic looking check patterns through a computer controlled loom for anyone who wants one. He even keeps a database of the "New Clan names" so all the "MacSchwartzenburgers" who go to his shop all get the same tartan! |
