Don't get me wrong, no one should force another at ANY time, but this still bothers me.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (AP) -- A new rape law in Illinois attempts to clarify the issue of consent by emphasizing that people can change their mind while having sex.

Under the law, if someone says "no" at any time the other person must stop or it becomes rape. The National Crime Victim Law Institute said it believed the law is the first of its kind in the country.

Lyn Schollett, general counsel for the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said the law was important to make it clear to victims, offenders, prosecutors and juries that people have the right to halt sexual activity at any time.

"I think it will empower prosecutors in charging cases where the victim and the offender have a sexual history," she said.

But the director of the Victim Advocacy & Research Group in Boston said it would be hard to imagine courts not upholding a woman's right to withdraw consent.

"To me, it's demeaning," Wendy Murphy said. "It's like the old saying: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I don't think it was broke."

The law was inspired by a California case involving two 17-year-olds who had sex at a party. The girl changed her mind about having sex, but the boy did not stop immediately.

He was charged with rape, and it took years for the courts to decide that he could be found guilty under California law. The California Supreme Court ruled in January that a man can be convicted if a woman first consents but later asks him to stop.

Lawmakers said they wanted to avoid the same kind of long legal battle in Illinois. Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed the law Friday but did not announce it until Monday.

Just changing your mind doesn't make it rape. You have to change your mind and make it clear to your partner that they need to stop.

I.e. you just remembered that you forgot to take your birth control pills for the last week so you say "hey, cut it out, I forgot to take my pills" and if your partner won't stop, even though you tell him "stop, now, get off me" then yeah, it is rape.

But just changing your mind isn't enough if you don't bother to let the person who is having (consentual) sex with you know about it.

Shitty laws really disatisfy me.

Then again our legal system is pretty good for the tools we have to work with so i'll trust the poloticans to make laws that reflect what the public that they represent wants.

This would never be an issue with me. There is no fine line. We all know if a woman (or man) is consenting or not. As the saying goes "No means No". All this law does is open up Pandora's box and empowers back-stabbing individuals to use pretend (i.e. - Kobe) that they did consent but changed their mind.....

I worry - now, even if a man can prove a woman "gave him the come-on" and consented to sex in the first place, he still has a damn hard time proving she didn't change her mind later (in private...)

And I know people are "innocent until proven guilty" but that really doesn't seem to exist nowadays; trial by media and all.

Hey, lets go ahead and take this a step farther. If the woman at any time in the rest of her life says no, even if after the fact or she just happened to say no in a completly unrelated conversation then it is rape. Lets not leave any loopholes in it.

I would never want to put myself in a position to where she has doubts about the pure pleasure she is about to receive. If there is an inkling of doubt, i have always been the one to stop and let her rethink her actions.
