Animal rights activist decrees that her body is barbecued and her skin turned into a purse
By Terry Kirby, Chief Reporter
19 April 2003

Leaving a donation to the nearest animal sanctuary is what many pet lovers do when they die. But Ingrid Newkirk has taken her animal-loving beliefs just a little bit further.

Ms Newkirk, founder and president of the radical group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), has decreed in her will that a portion of her body (she doesn't specify which) should be barbecued as a protest against "fleshfoods". She also wants her feet to be turned into ornaments to remind the world of the "depravity" of using animals in a such a fashion.

And that's not all. Ms Newkirk has also laid down that part of her skin be turned into a leather product to show that human skin and animal skin are the same thing and that neither is a "fabric". Ms Newkirk's will also holds bequests to two people. One is the administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, who can expected to receive both her eyes, appropriately mounted, as a message that Peta will continue to watch the agency until it stops using animals in experiments.

The second beneficiary is Kenneth Feld, owner of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He can expect to receive her pointing finger to stand as "the greatest accusation on Earth" on behalf of animals used for public entertainment.

Her stipulations are in accord with the spirit of outrage fostered by Peta, which is based in the United States. In the past, its members have dropped a dead raccoon on the plate of a lunching Anna Wintour, editor of American Vogue, over the use of fur in the magazine and claimed – without evidence – that the fat in milk contributed to the prostrate cancer of the former mayor of New York, Rudy Guiliani.

Ms Newkirk also said in her will that she hoped foot-and-mouth disease would reach the US since it would harm those "who profit from giving people heart attacks".

Ms Newkirk, 53, who was born in England, is still going strong as the mainstay of Peta. She stressed that the final decision over the use of her body remained with Peta. When she does die, lunching fashion editors may feel the need to examine the contents of their plates a little more carefully than usual.

The sooner the better... imho

I hear that "Long Pig" is pretty tasty.

I'm agains torturing animals but geez, what a bunch of loons.

Nad Adam 04-23-2003 05:37 AM

I think I would taste a bit just to be able to say that I've eaten human flesh.

Same here. I think every time a PETA member does something like this, it kills their credibility even more. It's gotten to the point where whenever I read "PETA" in a headline, I know someone did something really fucking stupid.

splck 04-23-2003 06:13 AM

mmmm...meat

MSD 04-23-2003 06:50 AM

Not as bad as the time they wrote a letter to Arafat for a Hamas attack using a donkey loaded with explosives. No mention of victims, just calling him a monster for a terrorist attack (by a group that he isn't a part of, he has his own) becuase it killed a donkey. Hello! 11 people died! The donkey isn't exactly the top of my list of concerns.

Bob Biter 04-23-2003 07:04 AM

Heh. Guiliani's "prostrate" cancer.

Sounds like a massive inferiority complex.

I wonder if PETA would back down if we started a whole cannibalism trend, to put everyone on equal footing.

Daval 04-23-2003 07:07 AM

wow, what a whackjob

JStrider 04-23-2003 07:20 AM

so.... where can we buy these foot ornaments that shes gonna have her feet made into? i'd definently be interested in buying...

homerhop 04-23-2003 07:35 AM

Any chance of getting her head as a piss pot. These people are such idiots really make my blood boil

Somenosuke 04-23-2003 07:38 AM

*blink*

Um. Right. This woman has to be the biggest attention whore I've ever heard of. Oye.

Lebell 04-23-2003 08:26 AM

I Grok that. BYOB?

Liquor Dealer 04-23-2003 08:32 AM

Her ideas really aren't original - Native American tribes used human skin taken from enemies for different things - early trappers after difficulties with the Indians used parts of their anatomy - such as breasts for tobacco pouches. One of the Nazi Concentration camp commandants alledgedly made lampshades out of tatoos pieced together like a quilt. The dumb bitch from PETA should be barbecued alive so she could experience what a lobster...just a thought.

gov135 04-23-2003 08:33 AM

I like open discussion from people who act/think differently. I don't like it when groups attack other groups beliefs.

This woman should spend the rest of her life promoting arguements for what she believes, not making a circus out of the issue.

PETA people destroyed their credibility long ago.

SaltPork 04-23-2003 08:36 AM

People taste like ham.....mmmm...ham

billege 04-23-2003 08:37 AM

What really irks me about these people is that they draw no line between humans and animals. To them a baby cow is as worth as my bud's two year old daughter.

I don't think that tourturing the animals we eat or use for consumer products is right, I think most people aggree with that. Many animals are developed enough to feel pain, that's why there is such a thing as a humane way to kill a feed animal.

But I can not accept that a chicken, cow, or rabbit is the same as a human being. The arguement they seem to come back to is that a damn rabbit has the same inherent value as a human. That devalues humans so much it disgusts me.

SaltPork 04-23-2003 08:49 AM

Weren't these the same people that sent a letter to Arafat asking that they not use any more animals for terrorist bombings or some crazy shit like that? Seems they value the lives of animals at a higher level than the lives of other human beings. Does she not realize that people are also animals??

phoenix1002 04-23-2003 08:57 AM

Yeah, I agree with wrkime. I also think we should send her a copy of Swift's "Modest Proposal" and see what she thinks of that... she'd probably think it would be a good change... She needs to check her biology homework. We're higher on the food chain, so we eat the animals that are lower down. Omnivore means plants and meat, not one or the other. I'm all for saving endangered animals, but this is rediculous...

BBtB 04-23-2003 09:19 AM

Okay lets make it all fair. We will no longer eat animals. Lets start eating humans. And we will start with the members of PETA

Dragonlich 04-23-2003 09:25 AM

at least she's not doing it to make an *artistic* statement... that'd be even worse.

reconmike 04-23-2003 09:26 AM

Ill take a belt, yes most definately a belt, with reinstones or studs or something.

I have eaten alot of different animals, monkey in the orient, they say it is closest to human, do you think they will send me a piece of that BBQ?

scarebearjinx 04-23-2003 09:36 AM

i say they cremate her and throw her ashes in with animals somewhere. i don't like animal rights activists for that reason. they take shit to far. i can see some of the points, and do agree in some areas, but she just went to far. besides, who's to say that everyone isn't just going to throw away her remains when it gets to them anyway.

what happened to the opposing peta (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals)? i want some bbq, dorm food sucks ass.

gibber71 04-23-2003 09:55 AM

I think this woman has a great idea in wanting to be barbequed. That's probably the only way she can get someone to eat her.

Nad Adam 04-23-2003 10:52 AM

Hey, if we started eating humans isn't it possible we could develop 'Mad Human Disease'?

phoenix1002 04-23-2003 11:31 AM

I think we should start a pro-meat eating rally. We can get a bunch of cows and put "Eat me!" signs on them, march through the city, then have a nice big barbeque in Newkirk's front yard.

World's King 04-23-2003 11:35 AM

Fucking Hippies.

Ummmmm.....ribs

Macheath 04-23-2003 01:05 PM

It'd be really funny if this backfired and they just ended up selling the watching eyes and pointing finger to somebody with more money than sense; Michael Jackson, for example.

SecretMethod70 04-23-2003 03:29 PM

So....when's the BBQ? Too bad I don't use purses, it'd probably be pretty fashionable ;)

What a loon.

ARTelevision 04-23-2003 03:38 PM

I don't get it.

If someone wants to leave their body to a restaurant or a leather factory that's ok with me.

What's the point?

louiedog 04-23-2003 04:53 PM

Less extreme, but I read an article on this guy that wanted his tattoos preserved when he died. Well, a few months ago he did die and his son found someone that tans leather to do chunks of his father's flesh and displayed them.

She's not hurting anyone here, no one is losing their fur coat, no one is losing their hamburger. It's an awareness thing. Let her do it and no big deal. When she throws paint on your leather jacket you can complain. At least be upset about the foot and mouth comment if you have to get mad.

And about the bombing attack... I'm sure there was no shortage of people upset about the people that died. But you know how that was responded to? Probably another bombing. I'd rather see a letter written.

Yeah, I posted the link to that story on the old TFP. PETA's World HQ is right here in Norfolk, VA. Here's the link to the story for those that didn't get to see it the first time. It's an opinion piece from the Virginian Pilot, the local paper here in Hampton Roads.

it's the nutjob extreeme radicals like her that makes making a real difference almost impossible. like militant vegans.

we do what we can to save animals and get name recognition so we ccan protetc more.. then some nutjob does the above.
3 steps forward, 9 steps back.

John_Gault 04-24-2003 08:37 PM

If humans were not meant to eat animals and use their hides, they wouldn't be made out of meat and leather.

Cynthetiq 04-24-2003 10:58 PM

PETA... sheesh.. okay whatever..does the 15 minute rule apply to Special Interest Groups?

snowy 04-25-2003 12:49 AM

Can I have a bite?

eltardo 04-25-2003 01:19 AM

I'm not sure if it's still done but at one time a local radio station was having a BBQ/Fishing party in front of the PETA HQ here in Norfolk, VA.
