Man plans to take passion for Mercedes to the grave

A retired carpenter in central Portugal plans to be buried in a wooden replica of his Mercedes 220 CDI dream car which he built over the past year, the Lusa news agency said.

"It is small on the outside, but roomy on the inside," Jose Gomes said at his home in Ilhavo, located some 120 kilometres north of Lisbon.

"It is ready to depart to the other world, but the later that happens, the better," the 69-year-old said.

The wooden Mercedes is only half as long and only one-third as wide as the original, but includes the famous star-shaped symbol of the luxury car brand on its front hood.

Mr Gomes said the car-shaped coffin would allow him to go out "in great style" as he has always wanted.

The former carpenter was born to a poor family but found success after he set up a woodwork shop three decades ago with money earned during an 18-month stint in France as an illegal immigrant.

I dunno, if I spent my life building up my dream car I'd probably do something like that.

I really think it's great. His passion must be deep.

Yes, and that's a problem... how? The guy knows what he wants, built it himself, and intends to use it. I don't see a problem. Personally, I'd pick something else, but I'm not him.

I think thats cool as hell, honestly!! I would have to choose something else, as stated before, but hell!

Why do people have a problem with this?

I have no problem with it.

I did think, "How shallow is this guy. Take a picture of your wife and kids with you instead."

But I have no problem with it. His business.

Instead of wasting his time making a replica of his car, he could have done something to make his current life better.

Like building a deck.

He could be chillin' on his sweet new deck riiiiiiight now.

I wish to go out fighting a bear, or being assassinated by a ninja. Something that doesn't leave a whole lot of remains to creep people out at my funeral =).
