Men ordered to stay in on ladies' night

The Mayor of a southern Spanish town has declared every Thursday "ladies' night" and says he will fine any man found strolling about town in the evening.

A spokeswoman for recently elected Andalusian regional party Mayor Javier Checa says the curfew is an attempt to encourage the men to stay at home and do the chores.

She says from October, the streets will be the preserve of the town's women on Thursdays.

A five euro (approx. US$15.00) fine would be slapped on any man found out and about.

The men of Torredonjimeno, a town of 14,000 people in the olive-growing province of Jaen in Spain's southernmost region, were not impressed by the attempt to tie them to the kitchen sink.

Resident Jose Damas told state television: "Who does the Mayor think he is to fine me if I go to a bar?

"I'll go to a bar on Thursday and if they fine me I'll pay it ... but we'll be seeing each other in court."

Uh... You can keep a man away from the bar, but you can't keep the bar away from the man...

So he's stuck at home.. So now people will all meet before it becomes "night"... and mind you, the women cannot kick them out until it is the next morning.. as they cannot force them to do something that is..... Illegal.....

I don't see it working. IF they aren't doing work around the house now... Then I'm sure they'll find something else to do on thursday nights.

I find this idea a bit silly.. Yes, it may promote women to go out on nights like this and get the men to stay home, but will they do chores? possibly.... but what about all of the men out there that are living alone? are they forced one night a week to spend it at home just because they are male?

how about visitors from out of town who are just planning a short little vacation there? that is one less day that they can really do anything.. I don't see this staying around for very long.

A mild tangent: I once worked at a company where my manager was a Malaysian Indian with a very traditional, conservative background; a woman's place is in the home and all that.

One day I mentioned I was heading home to make dinner, and he started saying, "It's very different in this country, in my house I am the man. I don't do the dishes. I don't cook. That is woman's work."

He was literally beating his chest punctuating these comments.

A day or two later, one of our workmates was asking around to see who wanted to head out for beers after work. My manager looked sheepish and said, "I have had my night out this week; I must go home."

Delighted, I siezed on the opportunity. Beating my chest, I roared, "In my house, I cook, I do the dishes, and I go out any damn night I please!"

Anywho, lately there's been alot of silly stuff coming up in the news, and usually it's coming from Spain or Italy. Dunno how they keep doing this stuff, but usually it ignores itself and goes away.

And even if not: just meet a couple of friends back at one of their houses, and bring your own beer

if its actually legal and wouldnt get repealed in court or anything... then they better get some quality tv programing on for thursday nights... but i dont see how that could be something that will really stay in effect...

Do they not have to vote on laws in Spain? how could males loose such a vote. bah, its just one more reason why i hate the law

If I was a woman I don't think I'd want to go out. Half the fun of it is flirting with men who are around. The men won't do household chores anymore if they don't do them already. My man stays home every night - doesn't mean that he does many household chores.
This won't work. There'll be too many things wrong with it and it'll just eventually be ignored. I heard there's a law in a southern state like Louisiana where you can't carry an icecream cone in your back pocket. This curfew rates on the absurdity scale about as bad as this one.
