Sorry for the shit quality.
I have never seen this bug before. It was about 3-4 inches long, and had wings similar to a dragonfly. I am in southern Ontario, Canada. Can anyone help? http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=1 http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=2 http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=3

I don't know. In my world this is a katydid...
and this is a cicada. What you've got is neither and looks to be quite nasty. ----- Edit: Found it! Dobsonfly Not as dangerous as they look, actually. Used as bait by fishermen.

I was just about to say, I know them as hellgrammites... Which, thanks to your link platypus, I now know that name refers to the larvae. Interestingly, I see them every once in a great while and I'm in the mid-easteren united states... so apparently, they come down from canada now and then.

Whats pretty freaky is those bugs that come from continents away. Living in LA, we have a pretty diverse society down here but that also brings some pretty foreign bugs.
A few years ago jumping flying spiders weren't around and suddenly its like "attack of the super bugs" or something lol. |

Whilst we are on the bug topic, I have been searching for about a week regarding one that I saw on my car.
I am in Southern Ontario as well. My wife and I were walking to the car when we saw this fly roughly 2 to 3 inches long. It looked similar to the cicada posted by platypus, but it was gloss black with clear wings. Nothing else. It was nearly invisible on my car as it is black as well. It looks to be in the horse fly family, but that's all I can find out. I really wish I had my camera on me.... I normally do, but the real estate lady we were with said no pictures allowed so I left it at home. Any thoughts? ---- Edit: After hitting the link Platypus posted, I had read there were indeed 9 types of cicada that are common in Canada.. I think it was one of those, though I am still looking at picks for more. It does look alot like this one: It may be a Tibicen chloromera... whatever that is heh.

Underwear drawer sounds like a great idea... I don't get it. I'm 18, used to love bugs at age 10ish, just recently realized how I detest bugs this summer while biking (ingesting gnats.. fun stuff).. All this bug talk reminds me of the time I was chased, along with two friends, by a giant horse fly back in scout summer camp..
Damn bugs.

My wife just had me call to have the house sprayed because there are a few spiders and the occasional cricket. The spiders are never more than 1 cm and the crickets can't be more that 2 or 3 cm. She would have called the fire department if she saw an insect that big anywhere near our home, especially one that flies!
