Pineal Gland, DMT, Stuff

I was interested in this drug called DMT, so I went to Erowid, and looked some stuff up, and what i found, is well, if you're a spiritual person, specifically believing in things like The Chakras, you'll know what i mean.

-- DMT is known to cause very intense trips, including things like mind-body seperation, and overall very spiritually life changing experiences.

-- DMT is created naturally in many living plants AND animals

and, if I read it correctly

-- DMT is created in the Pineal Gland, which is also known as THE THIRD EYE...

hmm, created naturally in humans, mind-body seperation, spiritual experiences, the third eye....

what do you think?

Giant Hamburger 07-18-2003 01:49 PM

Hail Psychic Wanderer!

All I know about pineal glands came from the 1986 movie From Beyond. Dr. Pretorious has created a machine that resonates your pineal gland. If you use it to much it the little guy busts out of your head like a worm.

Did I mention, it also makes you violently insane. Biting it off is sometimes all a damsel in distress can do.

Be very careful when playing with that,

Just because something is "all natural" or is produced in your body doesn't mean that taking doses of it is safe. Like GH said, be very careful.

Well why is the pineal gland called "the third eye", because right now it's application in this thread is profitless.

From the toolshed:

Quote:

G65. Do we really have a third eye?
Actually, there is a part of our brain called the pineal body (a tiny gland in the brain stem) which is nicknamed our "Third Eye", which is theorized to be extremely sensitive to light, and may be linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder. Neat.
Any other things we shoud know about it? From the information gathered in this thread, I see no connection to it and spiritual experiences.

I think that the connection to spiritual experiences comes from the fact that DMT can cause intense hallucinations, like visions of heaven.

And...?

Where is the discussion supposed to be heading?

butthead 07-18-2003 06:54 PM

From another board:

Quote:

how can someone determine whether they are genuinely in love? i think the question is even harder to answer because each person who believes they have had a religious experience will interpret it through the filter of their own religious beliefs, which will influence their description of the experience, and make comparing their experience with the experiences of others less reliable, presuming that comparison with others is a method of determining how genuine the experience is.

however... i've found the stuff i wanted to post about in my first reply... resources on the work of dr. michael persinger. he has reproduced spiritual experiences (and other emotional states) in a lab setting. below are a bunch of links/reading material i've found so you can read further. i think it might be fair to say that persinger is trying to answer some of the questions you're asking, but you should read and decide that for yourself.

this is your brain on god, from wired magazine 1999, is the first article i remember reading about this, where the author describes his experience under persinger's lab equipment.

Neuropsychological Bases of God Beliefs is the book persinger wrote on the topic of spiritual experience... you can read the first four pages at amazon, where he begins discussing characteristics of the "god experience" in a fairly careful, evocative manner, you may find it interesting. i also found a review of the book here and a related page discussing persinger's work.

here is a list of persinger's publications, which would make an ambitious reading list, and his bio at laurentian university, which is not too informative on the topic of spiritual experience but is interesting for background purposes.

you may also find the following informative:
a post discussing persinger in the MAPS forum archives
another article in wired about inducing religious experience
a PBS feature with persinger interview snippets
new scientist article about paranormal beliefs and brain chemistry

google queries i used:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Dr.+Michael+Persinger
http://www.google.com/search?q="Neuropsychological+Bases+of+God+Beliefs"

i didn't do any searches that took me beyond persinger's work, i'll leave that to you if you're interested in finding more.

MacGnG 07-18-2003 09:51 PM

this is a serious drug! not to be fucked with

YourNeverThere 07-20-2003 02:46 PM

I love this site like i love my family but i have to say one thing, most posters dont like drugs, or like it when people talk about them, mabye we should have a seprate board, or something. Anyway, remeber this drug is a tryptamine, so if your not very expiranced then this might not be for you. I dont know about the religous aspect of the expiriance, that probably has to do with if or if not your religous to start with, which you said you are. Other than that, dont fuck with, that is to say be careful, try lighter drugs first if you havnt already, if not it would be like injecting jack daniels right to your vains the first time you get drunk, when 6 years old. Also, its hard to find pure, unless your very well connected and/or possably a chemist. good luck!

I'm jaundiced about the idea of hallucinogens bringing any real enlightenment. I like what David Carradine said about hallucinogens and other "spiritual" drugs -- they take you to a place where you can look through a window and see a different state of being. But you're just a visitor; you don't get to stay, or bring anything back with you.

EXACTLY. 100% correct!

Anyway, about DMT, I read the book "DMT: The spirit molecule", so I know quite a bit about it.

Basically it occurs naturally in the body, and amazingly, its levels peak 49 days after conception and again at death. In fact, Its levels coincide perfectly with the Buddhist vision of Reincarnation. Buddhists believe that the "soul" is put into a body somewhere in the area of 46-49 days after conception. Go figure. Coincidence? Dunno.

THIS IS NOT A RECREATIONAL DRUG

Let me repeat that: DMT IS NOT A RECREATIONAL DRUG

Physcially, its safe to do. You only experience an increase in heartrate, and bloodpressure, and its slight in that. No worse than jogging. However, it is VERY hard on the lungs to smoke.

Mentally/Emotionally, it is extremly intense. For the 10 minutes a trip lasts, you remove all evidence of reality around you and go to different worlds, meet different beings, and sometimes these beings do not want you to be there, are in fact quite threatening. Experiences recorded show meetings between some sort of reptile/bug creatures that are sometimes hostile. You have NO control over what you see or what you experience. You can't leave this place if you decide its best to leave. Atleast until the trip is over.

Its not for the casual user......and its VERY hard to find on the streets, you most likely need to find some sort of recipe, I'm sure can be found online. Its probably for the best its not sold on the streets.....DMT is much scarier than crack, freebase, heroin, you name it.

Theres a wealth of information to be found on the internet and in libraries. Its been heavily researched, so make sure you do your research before you ever try something like this.

Skettios 07-21-2003 06:35 PM

I don't remember the character, but in the Electric Kool-Aid Acid test it drove one of Kesey's buddys crazy.

I would leave this one alone.

MacGnG 07-21-2003 08:56 PM

dont just try it cause it seems cool. its a serious drug and unless you buy it from a chemical research company, it probly isn't real muchless pure. it is also very expensive if you buy it from a chemical research company. if you want to experamnet with Tryptamines there are less intense but still "cool"

DMT is NOT a drug to be messed around with. Not only does it cause some of the most powerfull hallicinations of any drug it is also a disasociative (makes you feel like you have left your body).
DMT is more than most people are able or willing to handle.
DMT is nothing like LSD.

Lebell 07-22-2003 12:22 PM

I know nothing about it, but 'natural' doesn't mean dick

Belladona and Monkshood are 'natural' and highly toxic, not to mention, apple seeds produce cyanide (yes, enough of them will kill you.)

Fire 07-31-2003 12:57 AM

hey- don't fry your brain mmmmkay-
if you do the research, and decide to try the stuff- please report back on what the trip was like- I have not personaly taken any non prescribed drugs, but wont Dis you for wanting to experiment with yourself as long as you dont flip out and drive a bus through my living room after stripping naked and painting yourself flourescent orange- I had never heard of DMT till this thread and while I 'm not gona do it myself I am somewhat curious of what it does to you.

The.Lunatic 07-31-2003 01:56 AM

5-MeO-DMT is sketch also called the void

from what i've heard some people say its tame and isn't anything like what some people say.

Then others say its likened to being shot out of a cannon followed by the shatering of the unviverse, only a 20 min high however.

Becareful as with all psychodelic drugs they involve perspective changes. You must first decide if your willing to accept the perspective changes for a short lived high.

I say no to psychodelics.

butthead 07-31-2003 03:12 AM

When I was 16 I once smoked 40mg of 5-MeO-DMT. It began working the instant I smoked it. It scared me how quickly things began feeling in my head and my stomach. Soon after I keep thinking what a mistake it was and began scrambling to talk to friends on AIM thinking they would help calm me down. My nausea passed and I layed down on my bed. I lost consciousness soon after and woke up with little memory of what happened.

bundy 07-31-2003 05:46 AM

not much more i can add here... great advice, and warnings.

if you´re determined to go ahead with it, then just make sure you do it in a serene, peaceful environment. i know a couple of people who enjoy DMT every now and then - and they usually head out to a really beautiful (and safe) spot in the mountains.

be careful and have a great time.

The pineal regulates the release and distribution of serotonin in 12-hour cycles. These cycles of serotonin secretion define what scientists call the body's "circadian rhythms." These are the natural rhythms that regulate the body's internal mechanisms for rest and sleep, and continue unabated whether or not the body is exposed to morning daylight or plunged into nighttime darkness.
the pineal gland is situated like a centre in the middle of the ventricles, and which is the meeting point of threads coming from the external senses as if from the circumference;

raeanna74 07-31-2003 06:51 PM

I'm sorry I did not finish my post. I had to leave my computer for a moment and my 3 yr old daughter who had figured out the computer all to well clicked on the button.

To finish my post. The pineal gland is in the center of the brain. It is connected directly to the hypothalamus in one direction and directly to the eyes in the other direction. It is located about center behind the nose and toward the back of the head slightly. I apparently contains a full picture of what both eyes see and is light activated. It is involved in our sleep cycle and in triggering the onset of puberty. It is directly affected by the hormones put out by the hypothalamus.

If you mess with this particular gland you could be screwing up a lot of other things. DMT as far as I know (I am by no means educated in this aspect) could overload this glad and who knows - it may screw up your sleep cycle or put you into early male menopause (yes men have a form of menopause).

As those before have said - My advise is to
#1. Stay away from this drug.
If you insist on pursuing this at least ...
#2. Study it very well.
#3. Have a sitter of course when you attempt to use it.
#4. Make sure you get the real pure stuff instead of something else that could cause you even more problems.

I hope you choose wisely. Good luck. Let us know how things go is you do decide to try it. I am curious to know how it affecte you.

Zargix, are you interested in N,N-DMT or 5-MeO-DMT? I have had several experiences with the latter, but none with the first. MeO is an extremely intense mental high, very nice body high, and not extremely visual. I have never experienced the "void", though I know people who have. N,N-DMT is supposedly much more visual than its counterpart. People tripping on N,N regularly report contacting some type of elf beings and having very positive happy experiences. MeO can cause quite a lot of fear in some people. Do you have any experience with psychedelics? How do you intend on taking the DMT (either variety)? Another important thing, the 5-MeO variety is able to be legally purchased online, while N,N is considered a Schedule 1 substance by the DEA, so of course 5-MeO is much more accessible. I'll be glad to help you out in any way you can. I believe people can have good, safe experiences with hallucinogens as long as they are properly educated in their use. Keep us posted or PM me.
