Ever have funny impulses, like wanting to walk through traffic?
Not that I ever would. But I'll get these impulses to say, want to walk through a busy intersection just to see if I make it. I think its from my OCD, as that can give you odd thoughts. But anyone else like this? Or perhaps I'm just an adrenaline junky.

When I went to Six-Flags in the 6th grade in Dallas, they had a 300ft tower with a viewing platform up top.
I remember looking down at the ant-people and having an urge to jump. I've since read that that's a fairly common phenomenon.

i get some really wierdo impulses sometimes. Sometimes I act them out, usually not. I've recently wanted to do what Fremen mentioned, in fact every time I get up somewhere elevated i consider my survival rates if i were to jump. but mostly they're more of the socially-awkward impulses, like wanting to get up and walk away or hide under my desk during a conversation at work, or go home for the day rather than complete simple tasks. and don't even get me started on the sexual impulses

i have the urge to duel random people. not with pistols because you dont really get to know someone that way. i'm talking about the old-school sword dueling. i found that the most touching quote on realizing the character of a person come from something in The Matrix, "you do not truly know someone until you fight them." i had an experience like this when i did boxing. you just feel like you know a complete stranger so much better after kicking the crap out of them or having you ass handed to you.
i think i'll go out and buy 2 wooden katanas and just challenge random people now

This is what I do - to a T:
I'd say our brains are precisely designed for this; living instanced moments - processing the discrete moments in the past, examining the immediate instance of life and then predicting as many "possible scenarios" of the future as we can so that we can determine the best route to take. We're hunters, after all.

I often find myself feeling an impulse to quickly turn into a median and into oncoming traffic. Obviously I have never acted on the impulse because I am typing this from my personal computer and not the prison library or hell's library.
I also do a lot of play by play of insane situations similar to that of the illustration provided by Jinn. |

I'm always looking at reflections to see who's behind me. Watching cars behind me, make sure they aren't following, constantly aware of noises outside the house, etc. Just thought of another impulse. Whenever there is light traffic I have the impulse to floor it. Like really floor it. Sometimes I do and go over 100. Thank gawd no cops have caught me. ---------- Post added at 12:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:18 PM ---------- Sometimes when I see a pretty girl with a boyfriend I get the impulse to break them up. So far never works. But I'm kind of a bastard in that situation. |

Occasional impulses to do something dangerous are relatively normal and are typically indicative of temporarily low dopamine levels. Thrill seeking and novelty seeking behaviors as a personality trait are also linked to dopamine; although they are likely moderated by several genes, a known abnormality the 512C/T gene, which codes for the D4 dopamine receptor, is present in a statistically significant number of individuals exhibiting novelty seeking behaviors over a long period of time.
It's not you, your brain is broken. |

No, I work at a university and have access to pretty much every journal out there through it, plus the whole faculty to ask if I don't understand something. This particular fact came up in a psych professor's colloquium a few years ago. What I posted is actually on Wikipedia with citations.

I think we all have strange thoughts along these lines, when we're lost in our own world of thought. I don't see it as a problem unless you start acting out on these passing impulses. Fingers crossed that's not the case for any of us here.
I've often been walking with a friend and thought to myself about popping a cap in their ass. It's just a thought that I amuse myself with when conversation may run dry. I'm sure there's been other numerous odd thoughts that have entered my head on occasion, but screw it if I can remember.

ha-ha, yeah, all the god damn time. That would be instantly satisfying, not sure I'd want blood on my hands though.
