They get you high for one. This elevates mood. Sometimes it simple, hedonistic pleasure. Other times it's for meditation or other non-hedonistic intentions. Go look on Erowid and look at their positive drug effects.

Drugs are neither bad nor good. They are objects that are put into play by others. Those who use drugs must exercise responsibility to avoid as many negative consequences as possible. Drugs are not harmless.

I agree that drugs are not harmless. But just because one person out of the hundreds of thousands of drug users does something really bizarre doesn't mean it's in anyway typical. And just because some prostitute mom left drugs out and her kid got to them doesn't mean it was all drugs fault and that druggies are doomed to a lifetime of misery because it happened before.

Especially in the manner in which they were presented. What makes it even more funny is you didn't understand those same references when you brought them into the argument.

I just agree that drugs are not harmless. People use drugs to enhance their lives too, with success. If you can agree with that, then we are in agreement.

This guy was obviously messed up. Drugs do mess with your head. I've taken a few controlled substances and if it weren't for family I would probably have gone on taking them because I didn't want to face reality and I felt "better" while on them. Life is what you make it - If you are dealing with it while on drugs and not in complete control of yourself then how do you expect to improve your life. I've seen enough parents who don't necessarily have bad trips but instead screw up their kids lives because they aren't in complete control of themselves. They either screw up by simple neglect or by mowing their kids legs off. Doesn't matter to me how the kids got screwed up but drugs had an influence in the whole big picture. Drugs aren't bad in and of themselves but they need to be regulated because when you are on them half the time you can't regulate yourself as well. This is just one example of how that lack of control can go way wrong. For me I choose to live in reality and deal with it. I CAN and WILL make my life better - not just escape from it anymore.

I think that the most important thing to do in regard to drugs, including medications is to know the risks, the benefits, and decide whether you are willing to take the risk to achieve the benefit.

So do you think things like this happen more, less, or equal to non-drug using populations? And if so, do you think it happens more to people with current or underlying mental illness, or those who have no mental illness?

This guy obviously took too many hits of acid and it was his own fault to use the drug without a trip sitter present. Hallocagenics can be mind opening and enlightening at times if they are used correctly, but can be very dangerous if not taken in the right mood or if taken by someone who has mental disabilities.

You can EASILY lose your ego on any mind altering drugs, It's happened to me more than once on shrooms, ambien, and salvia. (Can't say I've had previledge to try LSD because it's dry as fuck where I live) I've totally gone ape shit and lost all my personality and scared the shit out of my friends. Even if you are perfectly fine while taking them sometimes a bad trip is unavoidable, you just have to be around someone who can help you out of one if it happens. And good trips are worth the risk to a lot of people.

How can you say drugs are bad sixate? Not all drugs are recreational you know, most are medical and I just don't see how people diss them all the time then take 2 Advil when they have headaches or expect perscriptions from doctors when they're sick.

Soothe.. I think its pretty obvious that he was referring to non medical drugs. Those already have a proven purpose, and thus are a heck of a lot more legal. Mind you.. if you wanna debate all of this stuff, make a topic for it ;)
