Do you take off your shoes in the house?
 

As the title states, do you take off your shoes in the house? Being Asian its an unwritten rule i feel that shoes must come off at the door. However i live with my dad and he doesnt remove his shoes. Im a clean freak and would prefer the shoes come off but since its not my home and i just live here, the shoes stay on. I just feel like poo parading around the house in my kicks...i feel like im brining in the outside world into the home and i live in a public place. To me the home is a sanctuary and its gotta be clean as possible and bringing in shoes means tracking in dirt/bacteria/etc. We have wood/tile floors thank goodness...it would be so much worse if we had carpet cause thats harder to clean and the dust gets embedded. Anyways its not my home and i must respect my dad's wishes so for us, shoes stay on inside the home. How about you? And please fill include your nationality and the type of flooring in your area of dwelling if you dont mind.

Race: Filipino: I dont remove my shoes since i live in my dad's house and removing shoes isnt his practice...i dont wanna be stepping on some dirty floor if everyone else is parading around in shoes.

Type of flooring inside house: Tile and hardwood.

Status: Shoes stay on.

No, I don't. I've tried changing into slippers, but I can't seem to get my husband to do it, so our shoes end up tracking dirt around the house. But I'd rather have dirt around the house than splinters. We have old wood floors. They are splintery. Going without shoes is risking personal injury. A friend got a ginormous splinter in her foot due to our floors, and ever since, I've told people who come to visit us to wear shoes.

with carpet or hard floors, it doesn't matter. shoes always come off.

I have this fear I'll need to exit the house in a hurry (emergency or what have you), so I wear them when I'm awake and leave them on the foot of my bed while asleep.
(when I was in the hospital in my early 20's, I wore my shoes in the hospital bed. The staff were a bit puzzled.)

Floors: old carpet, old tile linoleum

australian of lebanese decent - i take them off in my house. in other peoples houses it depends. in arab culture you usually leave your shoes at the door.

if im in a hurry and i need to go in and out of the house quickly, then ill mop the floor afterwards.

Shoes? Shit, that's just the beginning. My wife laughs at me because anytime she comes home, she knows the odds are in favor of finding me wearing nothing but t-shirt and underwear-- less if it's hot.

Maybe I'll keep the clothes (and the shoes) on if it's really cold in the evening. But that's pretty rare here. Mostly...no. No shoes.

Oh and-- American; hardwood floor, stone floor, tiles in bathroom, carpet in bedroom.

I'm an American boy and the shoes come off. We have carpet on the ground floor and wood on the lower.

For us, we wanted to keep the carpeting as clean and nice as possible the longest. Living in the middle of the woods on a dirt road, it is a losing battle.

Toss 8 dogs into the mix and...well...we own our own Rug Doctor just to keep up.

The main reason we drop our shoes this time of the year (Winter) is with one person wearing inside...and the others not, someone WILL step in a slushy spot :(

I have bad arches. If I walk without shoes, my feet start to hurt. This spring I got some shoe inserts, which are wonderful things.

So yes, I wear shoes in the house. I'm American (so, that's Polish, Austrian, and English), and our floors are wood or carpet.

Shoes come off within 10 seconds of coming into the house. With my current apartment I didn't have room for guest shoes to be out of the way, but normally I ask that all shoes come off. It helps with the noise, and especially the mud with the winter weather we have here.

I'm American and I have carpet and tile in my home. My son and take our shoes off, but not necessarily at the door; I usually take mine off in the bedroom, he takes his off wherever the whim takes him. I'm trying to get him to take his off at the door, but more for safety than carpet preservation - our carpet is beyond saving. We do have tile in the kitchen and bathroom and snow+tile=falling down.

I take mine off simply because I don't like shoes; putting them on is one of the last things I do before leaving the house and taking them off is one of the first things I do upon my return. Hubby usually leaves his shoes on all day.

My dad told me he went a year without wearing shoes in the 70's - he had enough money saved up that he didn't work for a year and just went barefoot to the store, etc. I think I came by my dislike of shoes honestly.

I live on the 2nd floor of my house. The kids and I take our shoes off as soon as we get upstairs. Mostly, because it's more comfortable to walk around with no shoes (socks or slippers in winter, barefoot in summer) . Of course, less dirt is always a plus. I keep a pair of slippers that I can wear outside by the door downstairs for when I have to take out the garbage or get the mail.

Forgot to say: I am American, and have carpeting in all rooms but the kitchen and bathroom.

American. Carpet. Shoes come off immediately inside the door. Unless it's cold that means kicking off a pair of flip flops.

We have two large dogs that spend all day going in and out. Keeping the floors clean is hopeless, we just keep a mop and towel by the door. I really don't pay much attention to shoes. I put them on when I have a reason and take them off when it doesn't look like I'll be going out any time soon.

It can sometimes be difficult for me to walk without shoes. When I'm having balance issues or my feet are numb, the hard soles help. My right foot tends to turn inward sometimes and when that happens, I have to wear a brace. The brace doesn't really work without shoes.

I prefer to be barefoot all the time because I don't like wearing shoes. However, I have to prevent myself from falling on my face. I don't feel like this all the time, but when I am having issues with my feet and legs, I wear the shoes.

When I am visiting a house that has a no shoe rule and am going through balance issues, I explain myself. People tend to allow me to wear my shoes.

At home, shoes are off in a few seconds and chances are my pants aren't far behind. In other people's houses, I look for a pile of shoes by the door and glance down at their feet for a cue. When in doubt, I ask.

I was thinking about this thread this morning. The floors in my house are so bad that I even wear flip-flops when I get up in the morning. I keep a pair by my bed. I really want some tabi socks to keep my feet warm in the winter when I wear my flip-flops around the house. If I take off my shoes, generally socks go on my feet to protect them, or I put on my flip-flops. I should note these flip-flops don't go outside (they're a retired summer pair) so they stay clean.

funny - my American colleagues/friends claim that it is a Canadian custom to take our shoes off at the door. Even in hotel rooms (something I tend not to do unless I bring slippers). Yes, our whole family takes shoes off at the door.

When house hunting, one of our requirements was a large enough front vestibule to put in a bench so we could sit on something to remove boots/shoes etc and switch into slippers. At the backyard door, there is an array of crocs/deck shoes/flip flops for quick journeys out into the yard. Especially with hardwood floors, we are trying to keep the dirt to a mimimum.

I rarely put my shoes on. Even outside, unless I'm going somewhere that requires wearing shoes, I say eff to the shoes.

I'm a natural-born Anglophone Canadian.

Shoes in the house seem odd to me. And we'd get in trouble for it as kids.

I'm usually barefoot. Call me a savage.
