Free Land? Can it be Possible?

7 Towns Where Land is Free - Yahoo! Real Estate

I'm often keeping an eye out for land, I love the idea of picking up and moving to some out of the way place and just getting lost in my own world but lets face it, that can get pretty expensive. Well according to the 7 towns above it doesn't necessarily have to be, awesome!

Sure some lots are only for commercial purposes, others are very small and/or located in the middle of nowhere but I found it kind of interesting that in this day and age a person could still somehow get a hold of FREE land.

SO any takers, anybody here at TFP ready to pick up and take advantage? Okay, maybe not but as a concept it can't hurt for some communities to take a shot at revitalizing or growing population while maybe attracting businesses and much needed tax dollars.

The Homestead Act worked because people could make a living off the land they homesteaded. For many of these residential parcels, giving away the land won't be enough unless they also throw in a job.

True, but depending on whats going on in neighboring towns (which could be absolutely nothing) it might attract people who would otherwise purchase land elsewhere, I'd probably commute the extra distance if it meant owning a free plot of land. I wonder how big the plots of land in Kansas are, some might be suitable to build up a small farm or something, I don't know.

I do find it a little odd though that anybody would just give away land unless they figured they could something out of it in return. In this case it seems you have some towns giving away both commercial and residential property so in theory I suppose if it worked you'd attract both homeowners and business which could really jump start a community.

Some free land 75 miles south of here was reported to cost $25,000/lot to provide hook-up to services, & 'buyers' are expected to start construction within a year. These are just city lots in a small town, not homesteads. The idea was to grow the town, but the timing was bad regarding real estate. 13 of the 20 lots remain unsold.

If there was some land closer to me, I might. Still, there's issues of taxes, clearing brush to prevent fires and a million other things that would require a lot more than "free". My family used to have a cabin up in Amador with a large bit of property around it and it took quite a bit of work to maintain. It was worth it, but I don't think I have time now what with starting a new business.

Do you have to pay a yearly property tax?
