On 40, it was 16/40, which breaks out as 40%. I don't think that's reasonable over a longer period.
Out of all my topics, 28.5%, or 38/133 - the average is more normalized and accounts for droops and spikes. I don't think there's any recipe to success for hot threads, and they really depend on who is online, who sees it, and how the thread starts out. IT seems like the first page determines how many responses it gets more than anything. If my own experience is any indicator, it seems the majority of my threads that went hot were the ones that challenged a behavior that most people considered part of their normal lives, or attacked something someone held as a sacred cow. Just as in real life, you get a lot of response to those sorts of things. I will say that they're predominantly not kind responses though. All of my threads that broke into triple-digit replies followed this pattern: 295 = "I'd hit it" - a discussion 172 = How will you defend your person, property, and family, if needed? 143 = Obama the perfect candidate? 160 = If you are depressed, you are a failure. 100 = Poll: Is "bros before hos" offensive? Food for thought..

I haven't started many threads. 4/19 were hot, for 21% including 68 replies to a brief little rant about walking through an acre of empty "reserved for handicapped" parking places in a driving rainstorm. You can never tell when a post is going to touch somebody's sensitive spot. I also find some of my replies seem to be the last post in a thread. I think it must be because I wait too long, and the thread has already "run its course" by the time I get around to posting. But hey, I got the last word.
