Tips for steampunk costume
I got invited to a Halloween party with a steampunk theme! I'm really excited as I've always wanted to make a steampunk outfit anyway. I'm rather limited in budget though, probably wouldn't want to spend more than 30-40$. Anyone have any tips? I figured there would be a website for this but there either isn't or my google-fu is weak. The websites I found were prefab costumes that didn't even look very cool.
So far I've got combat boots, and an old duster that I already own, so the expensive pieces are out of the way. I'm going to get cheap welding goggles and a nerf gun and spray paint it silver. Not sure what else. Maybe fingerless gloves? I'm not sure where to get old looking pants and a shirt. Maybe Savers... Maybe get a vest? A good steampunk costume is in the details, help! |

No matter what you end up with, you've *got* to have a pocket watch.

If you can layer various mechanical junk of the appropriate kind, it can give a cool steampunk look. Like gears, insides of old clocks. I like the glasses here with just a bunch of screws, the others are cool but harder to replicate:
ASU2003's link has a cool guitar...so even a toy plastic guitar could be jazzed up with parts from the hardware store to be steampunkish: This has some cool steampunk objects: |

More fantasy steampunk I think.
Some of those those things would be way too hard to make but give me some ideas, thanks. I'm going to make a big list of little things I can add and just find whatever I can. Clockwork is pretty similar to steampunk I think. If not the same. |

Go to Home Depot and find a can of Rustoleum hammered brass finish spraypaint. That and hammered silver made for a kickass Pyramid Head helmet a few years ago, nice aged looking finish to it. Get a big pack of plastic gears, paint them, and glue them to stuff. Grab some goggles like and spray the frames.
