the finest sentence of 2010

"They couldn't have been spies. Look what she did with the hydrangeas."

from this:

Accused Spies Blended In, but Seemed Short on Secrets - NYTimes.com

is the finest sentence of the year so far.
now i know this sets the bar quite high.
but its only the end of june.
so i figure over the next months we may find other fantastic sentences floating around out there in the world.
this thread provides you with a place to put them
and a something that's way more satisfying than a facebook update.
but feel free to steal from there.

what's your nomination?

and feel free to comment from the galleries.
how else would we know what the finest sentence of 2010 is?
maybe we'll have a vote in december.
who can say?

It seems we've all latched onto the same sentence in this story... clear proof that it is, in fact, objectively, the finest sentence of 2010! I'll be very surprised if another one comes along and beat that, but we shall see.

Maybe not the best line of the year but certainly a contender:

"I don't sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar, we talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."

Oooh man, two great ones so far. I heard the first quoted on Talk of the Nation yesterday and laughed for about a minute afterward. The second just makes me giddy that our professorial president has a ass-kickin' streak in him somewhere. I'd like him to bring it out more often.

I'm excited to see where this thread goes. Perhaps I'll see a worthy sentence between now and December. I certainly hope so.

An Awesomely Bad Sentence
from The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan by Andrew Sullivan

The Bulwer-Lytton award is given annually for the worst first sentence of a novel. Contestants craft deliberately bad opening lines. Molly Ringle took the 2010 prize with this gem:
For the first month of Ricardo and Felicity’s affair, they greeted one another at every stolen rendezvous with a kiss — a lengthy, ravenous kiss, Ricardo lapping and sucking at Felicity’s mouth as if she were a giant cage-mounted water bottle and he were the world’s thirstiest gerbil.

Hah, Molly Ringle graduated from the same local high school as my SO. It was all over the paper here this morning.

I wanted to post the winner in the Romance category, as he's a local Torontonian. Mind you, he normally writes in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre, I think.
"Trent, I love you," Fiona murmered, and her nostrils flared at the faint trace of her lover's masculine scent, sending her heart racing and her mind dreaming of the life they would live together, alternating sumptuous world cruises with long, romantic interludes in the mansion on his private island, alone together except for the maids, the cook, the butler, and Dirk and Rafael, the hard-bodied pool boys.

I could follow Grancey around with a tape recorder and shut down this thread. Just yesterday, she fretted about an ink stain on her khakis and I told her the ink stains on my pants always wash out easily. She replied, "Your ink is not my ink."
