I posed the question for a few reasons. One because I’ve been trying to help a shy friend open up.

I was bored and wanted a new thread.

Also I like little pschye questions big and small. I love social experiments; this being a tiny, but interesting one.

You have the act of spying, a ‘neccesary evil’ at times and mostly morally wrong thing to do.

You are told up front that this action would cause harm, but they would never know. So, is it okay to violate their trust if they never knew?

I can see spying as being neccesary, but evil? morally wrong? I don't think so. When gathering intelligence the question of good or evil mostly depends on what's going to be done with the information, in other words, intent.

We were told up front that they would never find out. How can it cause harm? The emotional hurt only happens if they find out which you stated would not happen.

If you're spying, you're not violating a trust. They didn't trust you in the first place, that's why you're spying.
If, for example, they posed for pics and asked you not to show anyone, showing them would be a violation of trust.

spying is deception, which is, to me, a bad thing. that's all.

think of it as cheating on a SO. yes, you are good to go evidence wise. its more of a simple question of right and wrong. if they found out they would be hurt.

depends on how you spy if you're in an inner circle gathering info, then you are violating the trust of those who are also in it.

That's basically everything I'm thinking. I'm not messing up their life, and though they might feel about it, even if they DID find out, it's something they'd get over. I've had stalkers before in HS, and it kind of shook me up when I realized it, but I got over it. This is the same kind of thing.
