I Found this incredibly useful App, and now I'd like to share with the class.

I found this web app recently, thought it was incredibly-useful to my personal needs (as an integral web archivist and purveyor), and decided to share it with you all, the beloved TFP audience. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Find the Original Source of Orphaned Flickr JPGs

Quote:

Flickr is a treasure trove full of stunning images and incredibly talented photographers. Unfortunately, a widespread lack of artist attribution on blogs and forums and the practice of "hot linking" to JPGs makes it difficult sometimes to find the original source of an interesting Flickr image.

Trying to track down the original photographer to have a look at other images by the photographer is nearly impossible thanks to indecipherable Flickr JPG URLs. However, underlying these Flickr image locations is a structure that can be used to identify the original source of the Flickr image, it's just a matter of using the right tools to decode those URLs.

Flickr URL Converter

The Flickr URL Converter is a tool that takes a standalone Flickr JPG URL and translates it into the full Flickr page source.
With just one click, you can redirect any Flickr JPG URL to the original Flickr page where the photograph was found,
thus allowing you to see other photographs by the photographer. The tool is able to accomplish this conversion by use of
a few simple lines of JavaScript.

I don't know how many others (read: non-nerds) will appreciate such a find but you can count me among the grateful. Cool find.

If people are linking images from flickr without providing a link back to the flickr page, they're violating terms of service and you should report them.

I know that, but you can't convince the entire internet, especially the 97.5% that don't have a clue about what fair copyright and creative commons licensing mean, let alone how to utilize it well enough that you don't violate the author's rights of management / entitlement to the works they've created.

Hell, I barely even knew half of the law myself until a year ago (still some parts I may skipped over). Alls I know, is now, I try to attribute, attribute and research some more to uncover anything leading to a name. I may not always be in the right by featuring it, not knowing if the creation was stolen or not, but at least with myself, I do all that I can to properly give the artist his due recognition. It is definitely easier now with the aid of the above, coupled with TinEye, but it does still take time and patience. I've even started asking permission from a few of contacts in other countries if they'd be at all averse to me featuring their work off-handedly here.
Most have little problem with it, but they are really shocked that I've even asked. Even when they do all they can to prevent random anonymous users from ripping their content, like preventing right-clickings on their webpage, or going all out into a flash interface, they can't sop it. Those who take, post it elsewhere with no citations at all as to a source, or worse, letting it be implied that they created the work themselves.
