Can someone please explain Cthulhu? NSFW

I'm not much of a surfer, what is this internet phenomenon?

Giant Hamburger 12-15-2009 02:01 PM

Cthulhu

roachboy 12-15-2009 02:03 PM

you should read some h.p. lovecraft to find out the answer to that.
cthulu was one of lovecraft's "old gods":

in general:
Cthulhu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the first creepy story: call of cthulu:
The Call of Cthulhu

he's also a cute purple plush toy. a friend of mine used to balance a couple cthulu toys on pianos that i would be performing on. i was never quite sure what to make of that. i think most people thought him a squid.

Does wiki tell you how to pronounce it as well?

---------- Post added at 05:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:07 PM ----------

Ah, it does! I still can't readily decipher it, but I usually manage to sneak a "Q" in there somewhere.

Zeraph 12-15-2009 07:03 PM

"Ca thu lu" or (same pronunciation) "Kah-thew-lew" I'm almost positive. He's basically the (fictional) tentacle god of insanity and chaos. He's associated with the deep oceans and the unknown. He has his own realm and set of followers. Very cool.

Baraka_Guru 12-15-2009 08:45 PM

The concept has also spawned a kick-ass heavy metal instrumental:

Cthulhu is often referenced in jest as a sort of "devil" that, character design wise, is more appealing than the christian satan.

Daniel_ 12-15-2009 11:42 PM

The point about Cthullu is that (in Lovecraft) the Old Ones are NOT evil, they're just unfathomably strange and horrifying.

Cthullu is not a God, Cthullu is a power that sleeps undying under the sea.

seamaiden 12-16-2009 02:16 AM

H. P. Lovecraft is on my new years reading list...seems like the best way to make sense of it. There's much more to this than plush toys and heavy metal and it's intriguing. I just spent ten minutes trying to get my tongue around the pronunciation, despite Wikipedia's attempt to simplify it.

roachboy 12-16-2009 05:13 AM

daniel's right. what seems to have been particularly creepy for lovecraft was that cthulu manifested as non-euclidian geometries. creepy bad.

Redlemon 12-16-2009 06:08 AM

Telekenetic, that is awesome. I only wish it had all the "rollover" captions as well.

Here's a kid's primer on Cthulhu:

Also, some lovely holiday tunes are available at A Very Scary Solstice.

Checkout Nintendo DS's new game called Scribblenaughts. In this demo, Cthulhu makes a guest appearance at approx 2:20 (mm:ss).

Drawn like a moth to flame;
I read all of Lovecraft's epiphanies many years ago.

I was just one of many Twitchy-Young-Sensitives that did the same.

Creepy bad/satisfying. (snagged on/by a night terror.)

fresnelly 12-16-2009 09:50 AM

Interesting. I've always pronounced it with a soft C, as in Suh-THOO-loo.

Leto 12-16-2009 10:35 AM

hey... me too. Exactly the same as you Fres.

raging moderate 12-16-2009 03:49 PM

tele - that is my new desktop background. cool character, i too may delve into the HP lovecraft in the near future. sounds like something i'd enjoy

Charlatan 12-16-2009 04:27 PM

Scribblenauts looks like fun.

telekinetic 12-16-2009 08:02 PM

Call of Cthulhu is like 30/40 pages long, if that. I read it on my cell phone.

Maybe that's how I missed it...I was immersed in Tolkien and Hermann Hesse in my younger years and I still haven't been caught by the net.

I, Cthulhu, or, What's A Tentacle-Faced Thing Like Me Doing In A Sunken City Like This (Latitude 47° 9' S, Longitude 126° 43' W)? | Tor.com / Science fiction and fantasy

It's here. It's amazing. It's a re-telling of the story, just for you and me (since we both have no idea what a 'SoothQutulu' is, or why he draws so many followers)

Fly 12-31-2009 08:14 AM

Nope, Disney wouldn't touch Lovecraft with a 10 foot pole or would butcher the hell out of his stories. I've only ever heard of Cthulhu showing up in his stories, the rest of the time it is pop culture references.

The rest of the people in this thread that have provided links are correct, he was a god in a story created by HP Lovecraft.

Redlemon 01-08-2010 07:32 AM

I think Fly was referring to the Davy Jones character. And I haven't even seen the movies...

Not sure if Fly was joking or not.

not joking but.........was unsure.

that's prolly what i was after man......thank you

Sammey 01-15-2010 11:08 AM

To me, I believe personally that the Cthulhu are extraplanar (simplified: from another separate dimension/universe) sentient beings (with several psychic or magical powers) in popular contemporary fiction.

Derwood 03-01-2010 02:19 PM

I've always pronounced it Kuh-Too-Loo, probably because of the bastardized spelling of the Metallica song.

As for Lovecraft.....I tried reading some of his stuff after reading how Stephen King was heavily influenced by him, but I found it extraordinarily long-winded and entirely NOT scary

Fremen 03-01-2010 10:34 PM

Holy shit!
God took out Cthulhu, using a shotgun, while riding a skateboard!
I'd buy that version of "Clue!"

--
Damn, this brings back fond memories of a faction named "Pirates of R'lyeh" in a now defunct browser RPG I used to play.
Some of those guys went on to try to make a Cthulhu-based mud.
