Just picked up 'Naked Empire' by Terry Goodkind, latest in the Sword of Truth series. I normally stay away from fantasy, but this is a pretty good series.

How do you like it? I really liked the other books in the series, but I really thought he got waaay too preachy in this last one. I don't know, that might have just been me, though.

I've moved on to _The Naked Detective_ by Laurence Shames. It's seriously funny. It also has solid characterization and a native's feel for an "exotic" setting, Key West.
I've given up on _Bandits_ by Elmore Leonard. Has he written anything that made you laugh?

Indeed.. The dialogue is quite preachy and long winded, but it's still alot better than 'Pillars of Creation'. That one was too political.

Over the weekend I read Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" and "The Cardinal of the Kremlin". I really enjoy his books. Lots of good dialog, fun plot twists and exciting action. I'll have to hit a used book store or goodwill some time later this week to get the rest of his stuff.

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. Sprawling and incredibly imaginative sci-fi. A Deepness in the Sky, which came out recently, is a prequel and I plan to dig into that next.

Last (non-academic) book I read was "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson. Excellent, excellent novel. I think I read it cover-to-cover several times before I managed to understand most of it.

I'm thinking about picking up a copy of "Snow Crash". Sci-fi rules!

Weird, I LOVED Pillars of Creation because it was political.

Just picked up "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett; I'm a huge fan of the Vimes/Watch cast so I wanted to try out one of the side stories
