Can Your Kid Do CPR?
You never really can tell when something you teach a kid is going to stick with them when they need it most. Check out this story.

http://www.t342.com/assets/MERITBDG/FIRSTAID.JPG This one seems applicable, but "First Aid" doesn't sound quite good enough. Maybe the "lifesaving" merit badge? http://www.mtcbsa.org/Camp/images/me...fesavingMB.jpg (remember - no posting pics of kids on TFP) |
wtf - I can't get passed the bit where the mother didn't stop the car to re-fasten the belt. Who the hell would do this while driving!! No wonder they had an accident.
Kudos to the boy - but they should never have been in that situation. |

She should have just done like my parents would do - Grab whatever was handy and throw it at me so I'd buckle myself up. Or have the CPR kid do it since he wasn't fucking driving! |

If he can do CPR, he damn well knows how to buckle up. |
Funny - I didn't pick up on the age of the little brother until Cybermike quoted it. You three are absolutely right, the accident should have been avoided. In this case, though, it looks like there won't be any Darwin awards handed out. I suppose it's an example that intelligence is more about education than innate nature.
|
I don't get it, she turned around WHILE DRIVING to fasten her son's seatbelt? Of course they had an accident.
I think it's great that the kid was able to do it. Another example of how we underestimate kids all the time. I know if I ever have kids there are a few basic things I want them to learn quite young. Another one is swimming, preferably starting as a baby. |

I'm a firm believer in stopping the car and PROVING to the kids that something bad will happen when they unfasten their seatbelts. This goes for running into the street or anything stupid. You don't "warn" them that they might get hit by a car. You make sure they are alive and KICK THE SHIT OUT OF THEM!! I almost did this when a kid cut me off because he was running after a ball. Sure I was driving at 15mph but I could very easily kill him at that speed.
Stop telling them that something bad is gonna happen when they do stupid shit. SHOW THEM!! |
had to learn CPR in 4th grade...again in middle school. something called "B.A.T." if i remember correctly it stood for Basic Aid Training.
grew up in florida, so i guess it could have come in handy at annnyyyy moment. |
What he was taught, and what he did, is rescue breathing, not CPR. CPR is not three pumps and then breathing into the mouth- that's rescue breathing, which is a common thing used for children.
That kid has to be adopted, there's no way this stupid, stupid woman gave birth to a kid with that presence of mind. She needs to be slapped, and then yelled at like the idiot she is for pulling that nonsense. Could've killed someone. |
In high school I had the option to learn first aid and CPR, at least it's being taught in schools. To learn it a such a young age for most kids might be a fruitless venture, more likely is that this boy simply had the foresight to see that his mom wasn't the brightest crayon in the box and these skills might come in handy one day.
|
Well my kid can do CPR... and has. She's been a volunteer fire fighter and is currently rescue boat crew certified in the US Coast Guard. But she's known CPR since about 11 or 12. I used to teach standard RED Cross first aid at the local Com. College and had her attend the class.
|
I learned it when I took a babysitting certification class at church when I was 9 or 10 and again in Boy Scouts when I was 12 or 13. And one of the better things that my wife's baby doctor required was that we take infant CPR classes before our first was born.
Information that I hope never to use. |
It's great people learn CPR but without a defib. nearby the stats are not in your, or the victims, favor. Usually the best you can hope for is keep blood and air pumping until a defib shows up or you can transport to an ER where one is available.

Kenny is FAMILY
OK some of you have said nice things about Kenny and thank you for that. As far as the person that wants to talk crap about my aunt you dont know her and you sure dont know Alex. Alex is one of those kids that wont listen to anything you say i love him but he wouldnt mind worth shit. My aunt is a single mom thatworks full time and doesnt always do things the way other people thinks they should be done. The wreck happened over a month ago Janet feels bad that she hurt her baby you people dont need to make the problem worse with your hateful words. I think what Kenny done is amazing. As for Alex he has still not woke up. So instead of bashing the mom try to think how she feels now and have a heart .
|
Brandi, I'm not sure how we're making the problem better or worse with our words.
The situation doesn't seem to change, and the facts stay the same. That she's a single mom has nothing to do with the fact that she should have stopped the car to do such a thing. This has nothing to do with how I think it should be done... It's a big heavy machine, that requires your control to keep going in the right direction at the right speed. You need to keep your attention on steering, period. |
Hey, at least she wasn't texting...
