What do you collect?

I used to know a woman who collected mushrooms. From lamps to salt and pepper shakers, if it was shaped like or depicted a mushroom, she had to have it.

A woman at my local bank collects the yellow happy faces. She has two bookshelves full of yellow happy face stuff. Her office is quite . . . bright.

I collect pre 1900 cookbooks/housewife books.

My husband has apparently begun collecting golf balls with logos on them, because they keep popping up everywhere. He denies it.

What do you collect?

ametc 06-05-2009 11:08 AM

Old coins and foreign coins.. but I'm not a coin enthusiast. I just like how they look and feel different than from what I'm used to.

Also, I collect crystals and gems. I have amethyst, different kinds of quartz, a ton of clear ones that I swear look the same and I've gotten them all mixed up now... and a tiger's eye. Really pretty stuff. :>

squeeeb 06-05-2009 11:23 AM

i seem to have a pretty kickin collection of internet porn.

Fotzlid 06-05-2009 11:23 AM

I have a small collection of pewter dragon figurines. She has a small collection of glass dolphin figurines.
We share a DVD collection of around 700 titles. Haven't counted them in awhile but they are all over the place.

Wrexify 06-05-2009 11:28 AM

Anything created by Pixar animation studios. I don't really have an inner child, it's more like an outer child.

I also like old coins and foreign money. I always keep a wheat penny if I find one. I used to have coins from 24 countries, but I have no idea what happened to them.

I used to collect swords and daggers, but I haven't for many years.

SabrinaFair 06-05-2009 01:44 PM

Political buttons from campaigns I've supported/worked for and refrigerator magnets.

My magnet favorite is from the Obama campaign--the infamous "fist bump" picture with "Yes We Can" under it. My favorite button is also from Obama--a special Obama/Derby 134 button made for the Obama campaign here in Kentucky. There were only about 50 made, so it's very special.

I used to go to a flea market about 20 years ago. You could buy a bag of sand, I think it was from N. Carolina. They had little hand held boxes with screens in the bottom and running water so you could "pan" for gems. They were small, and I don't know if they were genuine, but there was a lot of quartz, small amethyst, green gems that looked like emeralds, red gems that looked like rubys. I used to save them all, they were rough but pretty. Unfortunately, in a move 15 years ago, they mysteriously dissappeared.

I liked those gems, I had small glasses, shot glasses, etc. filled with them.

Like the original artwork from the story boards they sell, like Disney does, or the finished product?

700? Wowza! Do you spend a lot of time watching movies or just like to collect them?

My son collects coins, but I'm not sure if he really collects them, they are all stuffed in mason jars sitting on his bookshelf.

ShaniFaye 06-05-2009 03:21 PM

Avon cape cod dinnerware (so if you or anyone you know is looking to get rid of anyone hit me up lol) penguins and fairys

I also like to look for old (and Im mean OLD) photographs of people and find the families they belong to....as well as family bibles with genealogies in them at yard/estate sales and antique shops and find living descendants to give them back to

Nice! So it's only from campaigns you've worked on? Not old ones like "I Like Ike" or the "Nixon Agnew" split?

I collect celestial things. If it has a sun, moon or star on it, I will probably want to buy it. Celestial has always been popular but in the last few years even more so. It is nice because I can find good things that match my decor.

This is Pedro. I'm fascinated with him:

And this is Max. He's a naturally mummified deer head. I bought him off ebay years ago. Some sort of minuscule bugs keep feasting on what's left of him. But they die quickly. I find them scattered around his head on my bookshelf. Strange, as he doesn't smell or anything. Sorry for the crappy lighting but I'm poor white trash w/out a digital camera:

The closest thing I have to a real collection is refrigerator magnets. I also have a very small collection of hotel ballpoint pens. I leave the shampoo and soap but take the pen - more as a memento than anything else. Other than that, I quit collecting things. Hubby is a packrat and I am becoming averse to "stuff".

I like to collect plush Eeyores. I was given the nickname of Eeyore a long time ago from my family. After a while I got quite attached to the character.

The old ones are very expensive, so I've stuck to the ones I can get for free for now. :-) Maybe in a few years I'll start collecting the older ones. You know, when I'm not underemployed with student loans. :-)

My grandfather's got a great collection of antique political buttons--I Like Ike, Franklin Roosevelt, and the like.

squeeeb 06-06-2009 10:14 AM

now that i think about it, i collect experiences.

i willingly search for and try to do things i've never done before, to go somewhere i've never been, to experience something i havn't experienced. i will do just about anything just to be able to say i've done it, to feel it, experience it. material things come and go, get lost or broken, and are a hassle when you move. my experiences, once had, good or bad, stay with me no matter what (unless i forget them, in which case they weren't that great to begin with).

but i still collect internet porn.

I have collected marbles for about 14 years now. They have marble shows all over the United States, and I try to attend as many as possible.
The history, behind these little balls of glass is amazing and I find fascinating.

I like collecting smooth rocks, pebbles, and stones.
I bought a rock polishing kit to make my own, but it wasn't the same as the ones I find by accident.

If I had money, I'd buy semi and precious stones, just to fondle, but as I'm not rich, I make do with fondling nature's own smooth stones.

*this post took a weird turn

Seems like I end up collecting stems and seeds from rolling joints. Anything that's left over gets kept, for whatever reason.

Other than that: USB cables, audio cables, blank DVDs, whatever's around my computer "workspace."

saintlypan 06-08-2009 12:39 AM

I Used to collect bells..all shapes and sizes. Then I had to move to a smaller apartment, so I had to leave those in my mother's house. Now, they are my mother's collection.

Mine isn't too weird, but Stephen King books.

silent_jay 06-08-2009 03:59 PM

Rocks and old bullets.

Got a few pieces of polished iron sulfide, some nice archean gneiss with garnet and quartzite veins running through it. Some ultramafic rock with sulfide and chalk veins, a coprolite, just stuff we found around the drills and underground, or around the shop from core samples.

As for old bullets, got some unfired WW1 bullets made in 1917, and some WW2 bullets from 1942, a German casing from WW2 as well complete with eagle and swastika. Old shrapnel balls, a 25mm casing, inert .50 cal round, electrically fired .50 cal casing, just old shit I found in the amnesty boxes around base when I worked at the ammo compound.

Teddy Bears/stuff with Teddy Bears on them...they're all stuffed on a shelf right now. I hope to arrange them better when we get our house built.

Vinyl records, primarily late 90s to early 00s trance and house. I have about 400, and I've never listened to a quarter of the tracks.

Tully Mars 06-12-2009 05:52 PM

I just got three e-mails from a friend who also called me this afternoon. After thinking about the phone call and re-reading the e-mails several times I realized what I most often collect- CRAZY People. Crazy people who seek me out for help and advice. Crazy people who will not go away.

I must give off some scent. Or perhaps I have a tattoo, visible only to the insane, that reads "Talk to this guy, he can solve all your problems."

Reese 06-12-2009 06:07 PM

I collect dust. I have it piled up on almost every shelf in my house, I'm running out of places to put it, I have tons of it just setting on the floor and some on my TV and a little on my computer. I'm running out of place to put the shit.

*note to self: never ask Tully for advice* :D

I have collected teapots for years. I never tire of them. Love 'em.

I have a Pillsbury Doughboy collection that I bought from my aunt's yard sale last summer. Cute, but I'm getting tired of it already. Thinking of getting rid of them.

POWER TOOLS!! You guys are so lucky to have them on sale for Father's Day. We get flowers.

Anything scented. Soaps, air fresheners, scented oils. I usually have between 5-7 different scented dish soaps open at one time.

Xerxys 06-12-2009 07:29 PM

Tully, you must help me ... they are after my brain, my toaster told me to be on the look out for he who hath the sign, and that mark right above your left butt cheek is not a birthmark, it is THE sign!!

jujueye 06-12-2009 07:33 PM

I'm also in the music collector group. Now that I've got my old turntable back up and running, I've found some great old vinyl for cheap. During the 80s, many record companies realized that it would be pretty neat to sell the stuff you already owned on vinyl to you AGAIN on a CD. However, lots of stuff never made it to CD. Anyway, my latest vinyl grab was at a local record store tha bought up the jazz collection from a local radio station that has converted all of their music to digital. $3.99 each. What a bargain!

Pfft, I'm not buying it. Only a coffee maker would tell you something like that.

CinnamonGirl 06-12-2009 11:44 PM

Vinyl, but not actively. I have a decent selection, but it's only from a few people who let me look through their old records before donating/selling them.

I also have a nice little collection of Faerie Glenn figurines, but I don't believe they're being made anymore.

carrot glace 06-13-2009 12:04 AM

i collect junk apparently. not that i buy them, i recieve them. "hey son, we bought some new crap, so you can have our old crap, see you at christmas."

DaniGirl 06-27-2009 07:09 PM

I collect lots of things. I like to collect glass bottles. Deep dark blue ones are my favorite. I go to thrift stores and find the coolest glass bottles for really cheap. I also collect candles. I probably have over 200 candles everywhere in my apartment. I also love sculls, I make quilts with scull fabric. I know I am weird.
