Today I saw

Today I saw a turtle laying eggs in my yard. The hole was perfectly round and the egg was surprisingly large. I was expecting a bunch of small ones instead of one large one. Dug 3 holes that i know of. She was gone when I went back awhile later. Going to have to keep an eye on that spot. Maybe I'll get lucky and see the baby turtles dig themselves out.
I didn't take any pictures as I was in the middle of waxing the car and was running out of light.

What did you see today that was unusual?

edit: It was a painted turtle.

Quote:
Painted turtles are amniotes[4] that requires females to nest on land. Females prefer soft, sandy soil with good exposure to the sun for their nest site. Nests are dug with the turtle's hind feet, usually within 200 metres of water. The nest is no deeper than 10 to 12 centimetres. The females will lay 4 to 15 oval, soft shelled eggs, in a conical flask-shaped hole. The eggs are elliptical, white to off-white and are mostly smooth with slight pits.[2] Female turtles may lay up to five clutches of eggs per season although typically, they will lay only one or two clutches. Once the eggs are laid the mother will cover the hole with dirt or sand and leave the nest unattended. Painted turtle eggs hatch 72 to 80 days after they are laid.[1] Once the young hatch and dig out of the nest, they are immediately independent.

That's quite exciting!

Today we had a crazy storm and the lightning came quite close.
Also, a spider made a web in our window and almost immediately caught two bugs which he wrapped quickly in silk.

I have two Miniature Schnauzer puppies and today they've taught themselves a new trick. They'll run at anything and just dive into it. It's not just a normal run and jump at something. They'll run and when they jump they'll twist their bodies so they hit whatever they're aiming for with the top of their body. It almost looks like a football game where the wide receiver turns around in mid air to catch the ball. When they do this to each other, they'll both just tumble because they're so small. When they do it to a person or my older Labrador it's like they hit a brick wall and they'll fall flat on their side. They must have done this 20 times while I was outside today. It was funny every time.

Today I watched as my trusted mechanic changed the oil and serviced my twenty year old Chevrolet pickup truck.

Nothing unusual about that as I've watched him do this periodically for twenty years or changed the oil myself. We bought this truck new and have taken excellent care of it all these years. It has 150,000+ miles and is good for at least that many more.

What may be "unusual" is that we've kept this truck this long compared to the practice that many folks have of replacing vehicles at the drop of a hat and getting themselves further and further in debt.

I'm not patting myself on the back, just attempting to survive financially in our retirement during these trying times.

I watched today as my brother pulled my mother's 20 yo. Oldsmobile home on a chain for the 2nd time this week.
We thought we had the problem fixed. Now we're about stumped.

On the other hand, I was sitting on the porch this evening, enjoying watching the traffic zipping by on the highway in the distance, when I noticed our yard was being lit-up with lightning bugs.
I haven't chased lightning bugs in years and years, and I wasn't about to then, but nature intervened. One of them drifted about 5 ft. from where I was sitting and kind of hovered near me for a bit, occasionally blinking on and off.

It was beautiful.

Turtles rock. They're my 2nd favorite animal, next to dogs. And I started loving them even more after I saw 'Finding Nemo' lol.

Ummm... today I saw a bright green lizard on a fern I have next to the front door. Lizards aren't that common where I live. Skinks are, but not bright green thingys. It was cool I guess but still creepy lol.

I love a (wo)man who can tell the difference between a lizard and a skink.
