First of all, congrats to you and she-lish. :-)

I'm surprised that no one's suggested Abraham, as he's a patriarch in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. I think Abe is a nice nickname that isn't too cutesy. It's strong but not overpowering.

That's the only name I can think of within your criteria. Let us know what you decide!

This had been my thought when I first read the OP. All three branches of People of the Book descend from him, the Ur-Prophet. It would be a lock. Plus the name has a lot of cachet in the West (read North America). No idea of your last name, but Abraham would scan with most any surname, I'm thinking.

Nobody bullies a kid named "Optimus Prime".

I realized after posting that I was probably thinking of Baby Huey:
http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/tig...4/babyhuey.jpg

Incidentally, I have some friends who named their kid Hunter, and now refer to him on Facebook and such as "Baby Hunter". I haven't the heart to tell them it sounds like the worst Discovery Channel show ever...

ItWasMe 04-28-2009 07:40 PM

How about Isaac Osama <insert surname>?

I would leave out the part about a friend eliminating names. Friends and relatives can suggest names but should not be given a trump card. They are not giving birth to the baby, nor raising it. Maybe I'm a bit territorial, but giving an 'outsider' a say in what I can/cannot name my baby would have really pissed me off to no end.

Instead of that kind of an elimination game, we bought a baby name book. I underlined the names that I liked in one color; he underlined the names he liked with another color. We then circled the names that we had both underlined to see what we had left to work with. If you want to, you can each rank the 'agreed upon' names in the order that you like them. Use some of those names for a couple of days each (before baby is born). A couple of our higher ranking names either dropped in rank, or were eliminated in a short time because we got sick of the name. If you are left with two to four names that you both like, play with them and see which sound better together as first & middle names along with the surname. Ones ending on consonants sound good with a middle name that starts with a vowel, for instance. A first name that ends in a vowel doesn't always sound good when followed by a middle name that begins with a vowel. It can sound kind of choppy (not always, but sometimes). Just another way to come up with the best combination for you two.

Good luck, and congradulations!

dlish 04-28-2009 08:03 PM

wow, some good responses..

for me i'd pick Moses or Solomon. Moses would do it, plus one of my favourite atheletes when i was a kid was Edwin Moses the 400m hurdler.

sabrina/kramud - abraham is a great name, but you see, she-lishs dad is abraham, so shes not naming it abraham because her brother already has a stake on that name.

aaron is good too, but not up to par for she-lish.

i still like mika'il and i'll bring it up again...

ishmael is the hebrew equivelant of ismael in arabic. so he'd be called ismael. but i dont like that name either...too uncommon i guess?

itwasme - i was joking about the osama bit.. i forgot, i also have a cousin osama.. i have more than 70 first cousins, so most names are taken...

hepathia uncle phil? sounds like an std...

percy - imagine i introduce my child to my muslim parents..mum dad..this is Jallah...

GG - my brothers name is one of the ones you chose - i tried earlier, she didnt want that. she used to like zayd, but its fallen off the edge.

aadil sounds ok - but imagine the teasing at school - a-dill-do

thanks so far..keep em coming

Plan9 04-28-2009 08:27 PM

You made a baby? Wow, that's kinda monumental.

...

I guess "Thrognak the Destroyer" is outta the question.

...

I keep a Notepad file of potential baby names. I started it when I got married and, for some reason, have kept it since the divorce... been over two years now. "Clark" and "Killian" were the top two on that ancient list.

...

Hell, I don't know if reproduction is a good choice for me. Seems like a huge responsibility and I'm still rather self-centered.

tisonlyi 04-29-2009 08:09 AM

Abraham is the granddaddy of the lot, so... the arabic version.

Ibrahim?

That's a pretty cool name.

Killian.. bet he would be expected to bring beer to the parties..

Ahsan
Akbar
Akif

Adam is a good name for a boy, or else Yakub?

For a girl, Aleshia?

World's King 04-29-2009 10:24 AM

Holy shit... I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

Michael

(And not because it's my middle name. Although I spell it Mykl)

dlish 04-29-2009 10:39 AM

tison - yeah the arabic equivelant is ibrahim, but my brother in law who is not married or close to having kids is going to call that name, so apparently its off bounds to me...

go figure

SF- adam is too plain. Yucub is the arabic equivelant of Jacob, but thats already been discussed...considered but not a frontrunner here. by the way im having a boy!

GG - thanks..the only one that would tickle my fancy would be akbar, which means 'great' or 'greatest'... like an allah akbar.

crompsin - thrognak??? i'd rather gonads!

thanks for the well wishes anyways guys.

by the sounds of it, ive got just a handful of names..its a small pool, but i can work with that i guess.

Michael happens to be a good Biblical name... A little on the Catholic side... but still.

No... I'm pretty sure I'd pick on a kid named 'Diesel'. That's like naming your kid 'Viper'.

Baraka_Guru 04-29-2009 01:58 PM

Or "The Game."

World's King 04-29-2009 02:14 PM

So... the Viper thing is a true story.

In college I was hanging out at this pool hall with a few friends... We hear this parents yelling "VIPER!!! VIPER!! GET OVER HERE!!!" A few seconds later this kid, maybe 12 years old, walks up with the longest mullet I have ever seen. No joke. Bleached blond. Spikes on top. All the way to his ass in the back. And to make it worse he was wearing a Jeff Gordon t-shirt.

Xerxys 04-29-2009 04:59 PM

Some parents are just cruel, today I met a Michael Woodcock.

No seriously, the other day I saw a picture (started a deleted thread) of a girls name who was called Anus!! Day before yesterday, this guy I know told me he mostly goes by his last name because his first name is Mary.

Comon people, WTF is wrong with you?!?!?!?!

blahblah454 04-29-2009 06:03 PM

fixed that for you :)

When the first baby spindles was on the way, we plonked the '50 trillion baby name' book by the loo, with a pen and paper - we both jotted down names we liked and then discussed which one we liked.

Second child - basically followed the same principle.

Middle names - first son has my wife's maiden name as his middle name, second son - middle name is my grandfather's first name.

There are a few classic quotes from the Aussie version of Kath and Kim that this reminds me of:

Quote:

Kim: what about Italian? ' Cause I love Italian names. Cardio. Cardio Infarction
Kim: How about Tiffani spelt, T Y P H P H double A double N triple I (TYPHPHAANNIII)

Apparently you've all forgotten "Billy Bob". I am sure that it's awesomeness is almost too great to contemplate, but it's still there.

All good wishes on your impending blessing, d and she. Long life, good health and prosperity to you all!

Did you have a favorite grandfather or uncle that you'd like to honor by naming your son with a variant of their name?

Whatever you decide upon, a "lish" by any name will be just as awesome! Congrats!

Y'know, earlier in the thread, when I said my name was very popular, and yet hard to spell? Well, that's it. I see "Micheal" far too often.

Does the baby have to be named before he is born?

Perhaps when you and your beloved wife lay eyes on him for the first time,
the spark of his own persona will shine forth, and then all those lovely
names that have floating around ....your babe might have a say in what he wants to be named.

This scenario happened with a few friends of mine.
They thought they were both in strong agreement before the birth, on one particular name,
but when they gazed into their newborn's eyes...the parents looked at each other,
and said..hmmm somehow this name doesn't fit any more.

Just a thought.

I hope most of all your child will be born healthy.

Lucky baby, to have you and your wife for parents.

Strange Famous 05-07-2009 01:27 PM

Yusuf was a serious suggestion!

dlish 05-07-2009 08:13 PM

looks like she-lish is sticking to her guns.

its an ok name, im just not overly thrilled with it. it doesnt slap me in the face like its supposed to..or is it?

ring - no the baby doent need to be named before the birth. but the vibes im getting is that its pre-ordained. if it really worth fighting for? will i cringe everytime i think or say the kids name?

like i said, i dont hate it, but im not overly joyed with it.

i dont see myself being called 'abu isaac' (father of isaac - in arabic). now 'abu optimus prime' really does go down well with me though!

SF = yusuf the arabic equivelant of joseph came up..maybe the 2nd 3rd or 4th child apparently....

blah and GOD - thanks!

jazz- billy bob-lish sound better than isaac-lish if you ask me...maybe you should try to convince her for me?

Hyacinthe 05-08-2009 03:15 AM

My soon to be godson ( due to be born any time or induced on monday) will be Malekai - technically it should be Mal'akhi, a Hebrew name meaning "Messenger" but the mother has chosen the spelling so ...

Personally I like

Aaron (Arabic: Messenger / Hebrew: Shining Light)
Adam (Hebrew: Earth)
Amal (Arabic: Hope / Arabic: Lamb / Hebrew: Labor)
Daniel (Hebrew: God is my Judge)
David (Hebrew: Beloved)
Elijah (Hebrew: God the Lord, The strong Lord)
Gideon (Hebrew: mighty warrior)
Hasun (Arabic: Goodlooking / Hebrew Variant "Hazan":Status name for a cantor in a synagogue)
Ilias (Arabic: A prophet's name / Greek: The Lord is my God/ Hebrew: Jehovah is God)
Isaac (Hebrew: Laughter)
Jericho (Arabic: City of the moon)
Joel (Hebrew: The Lord is God)
Jordan (Hebrew: Descender)
Kadar (Arabic: Powerful)
Matthew (Hebrew & Scandinavian: Gift from God)
Rajeev (Arabic: Spring / Hindi: Lotus flower / Sanskrit: Striped)
Tamir (Arabic: Tall, Pure, Stately)
Tobias (Hebrew: God is good)
Yakim (Hebrew: God develops)

The other half and I have discussed it - we'd prefer African, Latin or European names ourselves. Boy will probably be Michael Andrew and girls are completely undecided.

Psychologist 05-10-2009 10:56 AM

I've always loved these names:

Gabriel/Jibril: The Archangel that brought the word of God to his prophet

Its permutations are equally sexy as well: Gabrielle, Gabriella, Djibril

Matthew/Jonathan: Very regal like; distinguished.

Julian: Screams of sexiness! xD

Its permutations: Julian, Julianne, Julien, Julienn are equally, if not, more sexy than Julian itself!

I don't know what's with me, but there are just certain names that I will find sexually appealing. For some damned reason which I can't put my finger on... hahahhaa

cdwonderful 05-10-2009 11:18 AM

Igor Suk, no one else will have it....

dlish 05-10-2009 06:56 PM

cdwonderful - i was thinking more along the lines of kaiser sozi!..but thanks anyways

psycho - jibril is a good one though. thanks!
