Locks of Love......

Red has brought this up from time to time in the past few years and has finally decided to take the plunge. He is growing his hair out for locks of love. The minimum length for acceptable hair is 10 inches, so it will be a while. His last cut was in November so I'm thinking summer of 2010. Since Red teaches at a college I thought it might be wise to give a heads up to his president and deans about what he wanted to do, and they were very supportive. The only problem right now is with other women. He has always caught admiring glances for his red hair. It really is a beautiful shade of red that is unavailable in a box. This past weekend, with it getting a little longer, I observed several women drooling as they gazed at his head. Some were old enough to be his mother! Red has always been the type to wash and go. But now, with longer "difficult to tame" locks I have had to introduce him to products and a hairdryer. He had never even used a hairdryer before. Before I came along he washed his hair with soap. It's been fun.

So, have any of you men grown your hair out specifically to donate? Did you make it or did you give up before it got long enough? Have any of the women donated your hair? I would love to do this, but I have fine, thin hair which is a definite no grow.

I had hair down to my shoulders at christmas time. Cut it all off new years... probably wasn't quite long enough for locks of love. If I had been thinking about it I would've kept growing it out for that... if I grow it out again I'll definitely plan on donating it.

I have donated my hair twice.
My hair is thick and grows at a rediculously fast pace. Pretty much ideal for this sort of thing.

If I could stand growing out my hair to the required length, I'd do it, but I really, really hate having long hair. I have a lot of very thick hair, and I get way too hot if it goes past my shoulders, plus my scalp starts acting up.

Maybe someday I'll move somewhere with cooler summers.

I've thought of it, but I'll probably wait a while. I look like a troll when I have short hair.

While using conditioner is a good idea, the blow dryer might not be. If he dries it completely, he's making it brittle when what you really want is usable strong hair(they strip it out and dye it, so it goes through a lot of processing).

My daughter has donated her hair 3 times so far. She can't now for several years because she dyed it two years ago then had the dye stripped out so if she were to not color it now, it'd be a splotchy yellow. Locks of Love will not accept dyed, permed or stripped hair.

When we went to donate my daughter's they said no dyes or perms *shrug*

Just checked their site and they do say they'll take dyed or permed hair. Daughter's last donation was a few years ago, so I guess they've relaxed that. Sorry.

Just hacked off a bunch for locks of love.

It was getting unmanageably long again.

Started doing stuff like this with it to keep it out of my way:

So I decided this morning it was just going to go.

12 inches are now in a sealed envelope, ready to go to Locks of Love.

We had neighbors across the street who let their little boy's hair grow out crazy. He was about 3 years old and had NEVER had a haircut. He looked like a little girl. Not understanding what was going on, we would whisper to one another about that poor little boy. Then, the little boy showed up with a fresh boy cut and the mom finally told us they had grown it out for LoL. We had no idea. The moral, if you grow out your kids hair, be sure to tell those around you. Otherwise, DSS might get called!

I grew mine out and donated it to LoL about four years ago, due to being inspired by a thread I read here on TFP.

It was an interesting experience, as I usually like an almost military cut, especially in the Summer here in Texas. I had to almost learn a whole new set of grooming rules. And sleeping with it was weird.

As soon as I had ten and a half inches, I donated. Got it cut off, then buzzed.
I'm in awe of men and women that have the fortitude to live with long hair.

Kudos to the original thread I got the info from, and to Grancey and Warrrrr for posting this one and donating, as well.

Currently, my hair is about three and a half inches long (been too lazy to get it cut) and If I can make it through the Summer, then Fall, Winter, and Spring will be no problem. It should be ten inches by Spring.

This'll probably be my last time, though. My hair is going grey, plus the fact that long hair is annoying.

My three nieces donate every year, at the beginning of Summer. Or at least they have since 2006...

They have pretty, thick dark brown hair that grow way past their shoulders by June.

I, too, donate my hair to locks of love every summer. I always have at least 10 inches... this weekend, they'll get about 15 inches. It's a great cause.

Of course I'm a teacher. I'm a band director, and my students pay attention pretty well, so I don't understand what.. you're.......talking............

Ohhhhhhhhhh.

You weren't talking to me, were you?

I'd show y'all a photo of my hair, but Grancey would have to take the picture, and any photos that she takes are hopelessly entombed in her computer forever.

(except for the ones last year from when I'm really, really fat. Those pictures keep getting printed up and hung around the house)

Just about at 11" to donate. My boy toy is coming to visit and then is gone when August comes around, so I'm going to let him enjoy the looong hair one last time before I donate .

I keep my hair pretty long and usually cut it once a year around my birthday. As you can imagine, I get a lot of length in those 12 months. After cutting it this year I realized that I could just wait a little longer and donate what I cut off to LoL. I don't know why I never thought of it before. I'm a little stupid sometimes hah
So I'm excited to donate around February 2011 or so
