Creating Discussion Topics
 

Discussion boards are a great way to discuss ideas. Discussion boards provide areas for groups to get to know one another. A discussion forum is an asynchronous tool, which means participants do not need to be online at the same time to communicate. People can compose and post their messages at any hour or from any place with an Internet connection. It's quite a swell thing. However, people may be scratching their heads unsure as to which direction to go or what to discuss. Hopefully, this can help.

There are roughly four types of group discussion topics:

• Factual topics
• Controversial and argumentative issues (of course one must remember to attack the post and not the poster. It's not personal, it's the Internet.)
• Abstract discussion material
• Case studies with research and much detailed for those who like to delve into such things

Here is a list of ideas to get one started on a posting frenzy. Choose a topic, vary it a bit to be original and make sure you post in the correct area. Happy posting! :thumbsup:

• Conspiracy is a very common form of political behavior.
• The pros and cons of having a credit card.
• Sustainable urban living without the use of excessive natural resources must be our future.
• Are there extraterrestrials who influence events on Earth?
• Marijuana has a medical value.
• Direct mail is a special form of junk mail.
• Online dating chats have nothing to do with a search for a soul mate.
• Life imprisonment is a good alternative to capital punishment.
• What is wrong with child labor?
• Breast Implants
• Bigamy
• The Hippocratic Oath
• Leadership - What necessary changes are needed in your community organization and how do you want to lead the process?
• Work Ethics - Can we shape workers who have the sense that they serve the company and community?

Feel free to add other ideas for discussion. Brainstorming is a great way to get things done.

How come there's a banner that keeps telling me to create threads and topics at the top of every page? Why am I being singled out for this? There must be other members out there who can create content, too.

It follows me everywhere. I can't even jerk off in the titty board without being told to start a topic. It's a little creepy.

Then you best pick a topic from the list and create a thread, you perv. :splat:

(puts on serious face) I'm of the thought that a lot of people don't start discussions because they don't think they have anything worthwhile to say or it takes too much effort to think.
I miss at least one of our senior members for those reasons. Their posts were so thought provoking that one felt compelled to respond.

If you don't post you can avoid being shot down or ignored.
Life is cold enough.

Maybe things will start changing. It's worth a shot.

For all the dejected newbies! I have to say this every time this subject comes up.

When I first joined the TFP it took a couple of months of regularly contributing to threads here before people started acknowledging my existence. Don't take it personally! The lack of response is attributable to a variety of factors none of them being that you are an uninteresting person without any good ideas to share. It just means that people haven't warmed up to you, yet. And in a cold, static venue like a discussion forum, warmth is important - especially when the subject matter being discussed is often of an intimate and/or intensely personal nature. The easiest way to jump start interaction with folks here is to start threads - people will respond to you directly much more readily when you are asking them to give their point of view on a subject than they will when they are simply reading your opinion on an already existing thread. I realize this is difficult for some people who are on the shy side when it comes to meeting new people (like me) and for us it means you have to be patient and not let the value of your contributions be decided by responses from other people. Confidence in your ideas, I guess, is a key factor to 'making it' here at TFP.

But really, now that I think about it, it's not just the TFP. I joined a site for baby boomers a couple of months ago (that's 'old folks' to some of you people :p), and it took a good bit of time for people to warm up to me there, too. In fact, even though I have befriended a few people there, I still don't feel like I 'belong.' My posts are regularly ignored, but it doesn't keep me from contributing when I feel I have something to say.

Just don't give up so quickly.

I think it's quite shitty that people feel like they are being shot down or ignored. I say post whatever the fuck you feel like and if people are nasty tell them to piss off.

Flat5, if you post, no matter how blah, I'll respond. Bring it on.

One way to guarantee results is to stroke other people's...um...ego. Ask about them and make people feel that their opinion is significant. It's just like dating, you can go to the Erogenous Zone for your booty calls.

Here are some more ideas:
Traveling the world...where have you been and what is the best?
Foods...what is something that you think everyone should try at least once?
Animals...do you really think the elephant is getting a raw deal with the circus?
Urban vs. Rural...which is better and why?
Suburbia...when is it going to die? (Personal note: I really hoped the gas crunch would speed this along.)
The Man..who is he and how can we bring him down?

You can also post things that you think people wouldn't talk about and see what happens. Like I hate looking down and seeing that I need to trim my fingernails, but I don't have anything to do it with. I wish I had been a Girl Scout so I'd be more prepared for those situations.

I'm waiting to see how ng incorporates all these into one post. The last one was classic.
