Happy Darwin Day!

Happy 200th birthday, Mr. Charles Darwin. There's a bulletin board at school dedicated to Darwin, with a couple big sheets of poster-board sized paper, for comments and/or debate. I swung by earlier in the day, and was a little upset that it had been taken down (the display had been up since last year.) "Well, that doesn't make sense," I thought. Why would they take it down on the 12th? (it could've been taken down yesterday, I don't have classes on Wednesdays.) Anyway, I walked by later to find a brand new display (where I got the above pic), and some brand new comment paper. Woohoo! Other than the bulletin board, I don't think the school did anything for today. OSU had a banquet of some sort, but I live two hours away from Columbus. Were there any events going on in your area? |
It's also Lincoln's birthday.

So which came first; the chicken or the egg? The egg would be a rare genetic mutation when a red junglefowl got it on with a grey junglefowl.
Then again... Why did some chemical elements come together forming viri or bacteria millions/billions of years ago? What was different in that chemical reaction that spawned life, where we still have a hard time recreating the right conditions today in a lab? Can life develop and evolve on any other planets/moons? And there are still a lot of other unanswered questions, but the theory has held for 150 years. |
I like to think that the heavily-bearded parents of ancient Middle Eastern male superheroes created the universe and that everything has a purpose.

Yay! Darwin day was celebrated in full-force this whole week. Cookies in the Botany office, in all sorts of interesting cookie-cutter shapes including dinosaurs, camels, acorns, and finches. Darwin's birthday is a fun event on a college campus.

I wish I could get a print of that to hang in my living room.
