Creative Valentine's Day Gifts?

I wanted to do something creative for VDay this year, and was hoping there were others out there with some inspiration for me. I did come across a few places that boast personalized wine, where you get to design a label and have it put on a bottle. That sounded nice, as both my girlfriend and I like wine. One place even had etched boxes, velvet bags, and the like. I definitely want to do something personalized and unique. Any ideas? Thanks all, and take care.

The quickest way to my heart is through food. Why not try a romantic home-cooked attempt at a gourmet dinner for two? Not sure if it's creative or unique, but it makes for a fun experience.

My S.O. always asks me to teach her new words-- she thinks I'm smart. So I came across this glass etched thing defining "Soul Mates." But we're not really soul mates yet, and I don't want to scare her off. She does frequently claim that we're kindred spirits, so I went around and found this:

Personalized Gifts - Heart Sculpture Love Letter

And wrote a cute definition of Kindred Spirits on there.

Title: Kindred Spirits
Letter:
1. n. a person for whom one feels a
deep emotional, spiritual and
physical connection, especially a
soul mate, lover, confidant, or
best friend, etc.

2. adj. of or describing a
connection for whom one feels feels
a mutual affinity which cannot be
expressed through words.

3. See: Randi & Kitto
Ending Sentiment Line 1: Be Mine
Ending Sentiment Line 2: XXX-2009

In one of the definitions I wrote see: (her name) and (My nickname) . I thought it was cute.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Plan9 02-02-2009 07:07 PM

KirStang,

You do realize that I'm going to call you Kitto at the range now, right? Heh, just kidding.

...

Basically: Valentine's Day is a commerical suckerpunch to the scrotum.

Yeah, it turns out that I'm horrible at buying girls gifts. I openly admit it. I do the Photoshop collage 'o memories print out and some fancy lingerie. I did the A-frame cabin in the mountains once but she didn't appreciate it because she said the water smelled funny.

I would rather do things than give things. My favorite Valentine's Day activity involved snowshoes in 3' of fluffy powder for a few hours followed by hot-hot blanket wrestling to thaw out.

Sellout: It seems most of my previous partners (last four, anyway) would prefer the same old commercialized flowers, card, and chocolates routine. Ya know, since my genuine heart-felt emotions are worthless to my companions.

.

.

.

...because I don't have any.

Scratch your name into her back....it'd be like personalized labels, etched boxes and it's unique. :p

Is that before or after the red hot candle wax?

Definitely before. The hot wax mixed with the little droplets of blood just scream Valentine's Day! And it makes a really interesting texture that's fun to play with.

Plan9 02-02-2009 07:47 PM

I know candle wax is supposed to be "seductive torture" or whatever, but the times that a partner and I played with it I found it really arousing.

Hahah, nah... it's good for ya. Makes ya human. Here at TFP, many of our members are human and appreciate it.

Plus, you're schooling me in what I should being doing in relationships... since mine end in infidelity and trash bags.

A box of condoms and a bottle of Old Harper.

Creative gifts are hard as fuck. I usually stick with chocolates, roses, maybe a bottle of wine for us to share.

But.. I am good at finding jewelry she likes, so every once in a while I'll do that.

The best Valentine's Day I had involved my boyfriend showing up unexpectedly at my door during the middle of the week (we were long distance) with some pretty flowers and a huge grin on his face since I wasn't expecting to see him until the weekend. He had called me that morning to wish me a happy Valentine's Day and told me he'd make up for not being able to see each other on the weekend. So seeing him at my door not long after I got home from class was a great surprise (sneaky!!).

It was snowy, so we built a snowman on the Oval and drank hot chocolate and snuggled and had a snowball fight before he had to drive home (class the next day).

He showed up like that for my birthday, too.

I think you have the right idea there, not all girls want an expensive gift. I personally prefer something thoughtful, and doing something, I agree, says a lot more than just buying something off a shelf. I also think the collage idea is nice. I know I've done some corny things myself. Like spell out 'I love you' in candles in the living room for him to find. Or making a jar with 365 hearts (one for each day of the year) saying all sorts of nice things to him. It didn't involve spending huge amounts of money. Ok now I'm embarrassed! But it's good to share. Needless to say, the harder you try, the less appreciated it seems to be (that's my experience). Sucks.

I agree Valentine's day is a commercial event these days, but that doesn't mean you can't make it an excuse to celebrate loving each other. Of course, it can be done on any day of the year, but since everyone is being lovey dovey on that date, then why not be inspired by the atmosphere and use it to your advantage?

You mean like this?

Hyacinthe 02-03-2009 06:05 AM

Our anniversary and valentines are 1 week apart so we are celebrating the two at once ( specially since we are both working valentines)

As the old one year anniversary (yes I know we're not married but hey an anniversary is an anniversary) gift theme was meant to be paper he is getting from me a series of role playing books - Fuzzy Heroes and all the expansions. Having to get them specially shipped over since the people don't normally post internationally.

He's also getting an embraidery piece I have been working on for the last few months of Invader Zim and Gir. He loves that show and has found the idea of an embroidery done of something so silly vastly amusing since he's only ever seen it done of knights or dragons or fairies and the like.

For his birthday I did something a bit more valentinish though. I wrote a poem for him then put it in an interestingly shaped bottle with some sand in the bottom for pretty.

He was thrilled with the gift, his favourite song is message in a bottle amongst other things and I themed the ink and decoratins on the parchment all around things he loved, favourite colours and the like.

If you're not good at poetry there are a heap of places online that you can grab poems from to.

@ dick in a box dude:

That's not a half bad idea....as long as she has a sense of humour. Definitely points for creativity :p Otherwise...it might be dangerous!

BigBob234 02-03-2009 08:56 AM

I have a hand-written letter that I'm almost done with. I just talk about my love for her. Got a couple of poems and crap in there, too. We live together so I'm going to mail it the day before. I don't know what we'll do that night. Prolly just a nice dinner and our favorite, romantic Italian joint and then watch a chick-flick.

For my ex: I'm going to take a shit in her mailbox after eating my fill of crab cakes the night before.

Berling 02-03-2009 09:17 AM

Thank you

Just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas and inspiration. I think we may just mix a bottle of wine with some hot candle wax, a thoughtful poem, and some snow...but all the same, keep the thoughts flowing, :).

Take care all

Let me preface this by saying I hate Valentine's Day. My idea of celebrating the holiday is not gagging when it's mentioned.....but, I'm pretty creative, so I'll give it a whirl.
  • I'm still a fan of the "mixed tape" concept. Of course, it's more "burned CD's" now. But music plays a big role in my life--certain songs are inextricably linked to persons, places, or things. I always like to know which songs are connected to me in another's mind. They're cheap and easy to make, but the gesture means a lot.
  • I love when people give me things I love that I rarely buy myself--spa gift certificates come to mind. Nothing like getting a massage or pedicure when you're not expecting it....
  • Things that require effort and planning always tug at the heartstrings--homemade meals, handcrafted gifts, big surprises. It always means a lot when someone puts an effort to make a gift that is truly for *you*

I'm going to buy my next girlfriend a Uzi for Valentine's Day.

"Look, honey... it's Israeli!"

BigBob234 02-04-2009 06:17 AM

Hey, at least I'm thinking about her. Not many ex's think of their whoring, bitch of an ex-wife on Valentine's Day.

It's all about remembering our feelings for those close to us, right?

(Sort of) kidding aside: Now that I'm with my gf I actually ENJOY (that right, not just tolerate) Valentine's Day. Really, it's kinda liberating. *takes deep, cathartic breath and exhales*

girldetective 02-04-2009 10:02 PM

Ive mentioned on some thread somewhere on TFP how last V Day was probably the most romantic a girl could ask for. No kidding. The singing, the playing, the kiss, the ballgown, the dancing. A lot of 2008 was like that for me.

Please shoot me if it ever happens again. Jeez.

This V Day Im making tin license plates for my friend's and mine bikes : They'll read Rebel Love and feature this pic all rubbed out and earthy and good:
