How Many Unread Emails in your Inbox?

how many unread emails in your email inbox?

currently i have 73 unread emails in my hotmail inbox. ive made the effort lately to go through all my crap and cut it down from the 500 unread emails i had a few weeks ago.

when i hit 500 i knew it was time to do something - a spring clean so to speak. its just hard to find them all. ive got 32 pages of emails from years of emailing that i need to go through (after deleting 430 unread emails). most of the unread stuff is from mailing lists that i rarely even read or ads or viagra pills.

have you done a spring clean lately? does it bother you if you have even 1 unread email?

i went to a friends place a few months back and he had 9000 (yes nine thousand) unread emails in his hotmail inbox. some people hoarde crap. my friend hoardes junkmail.

give us your stories!

The_Jazz 11-02-2008 07:51 AM

Unread? Zero. At work, though, I have about 15,000 in there. Luckily, I get along well with our CIO, and he doesn't harrass me too much about them. I'm due for a pruning soon, though.

snowy 11-02-2008 08:12 AM

Seven, and all of them are either links to fanfiction stories I'm subscribed to but haven't had the time to sit down and read yet or urging me to vote/donate/volunteer. I also keep getting an email EVERY DAY from a mailing list I used to be the admin of for my living group in university, wanting me to moderate some emails that are being sent to the list. All of them are spam, and it's been five years since I used the list, so my password is long forgotten.

I try to keep my inbox relatively clean...so I just popped over there and now I'm down to two unread emails, both fanfic related.

Redjake 11-02-2008 08:44 AM

None at home or at work. I am obsessed with keeping my email up to date.

My "spam address" has thousands of emails unread - I usually check it once per month and it has at least 3 - 4000 emails in it. I just empty them all at one time.

BadNick 11-02-2008 09:19 AM

none unread

In my home inbox I have 6 right now that I plan to reply to soon. I check my inbox at home a couple times a day, delete a couple junks that sneak through, file in folders if I want to keep it.

In work I have about 10 in my inbox since I owe a reply to those. We have a decent filter so real junk is limited to a couple a day and I reply to most customer questions within a day, sooner if possible.

telekinetic 11-02-2008 09:22 AM

My gmail had 4000...thank god they added the 'select all' option so I could mark them unread before porting them onto my g1.

anti fishstick 11-02-2008 10:10 AM

haha i usually have a lot of crap... unread: 568

uncle phil 11-02-2008 10:38 AM

zero...

Fotzlid 11-02-2008 10:41 AM

None in either account.

Peaches 11-02-2008 02:09 PM

I jst got finished sorting and replying to email, so only 2 in both accounts.

inBOIL 11-02-2008 02:30 PM

How the hell do you accumulate hundreds of unread emails? Are these accounts that you've forgotten about for several months, after deactivating the spam filter?

The most I've had at a time was around 20. I check all my accounts at least twice a week, and immediately delete any spam and read the rest. I guess seeing unread messages bothers me and I have to keep my inbox clean. Weird, because my desktops (both computer and wood) are cluttered with crap.

curiousbear 11-02-2008 02:34 PM

I have only five close friends. So all of them and thier wives email me to my office email id.

My office inbox never crosses 99 unread emails. Currently it is at 22. But when that is because I mark them unread even after reading. I mark them read and move to personal folders only after the action is taken, proper response is sent.

My yahoo id is currently at 120+. I dont bother. I go there only once in a week and clean up as much as possible.

Bear Cub 11-02-2008 03:11 PM

None. I have to provide technical support to the guys on site. If I don't get back to them, they fall behind schedule. If I pretend I didn't get it, well, I can't, since all e-mails are CC'd to a separate inbox for each project.

blktour 11-02-2008 03:33 PM

None. I also have this thing to check my email addresses about 4 times a day. I usually wake up to about 8 to start off with for the day. after that, it pretty much stays empty throughout the day.

ASU2003 11-02-2008 04:03 PM

9112. It might be more now. I only read the ones I care about out of the first 25. I don't delete them if they aren't on the front page.

spindles 11-02-2008 04:40 PM

none. My gmail account uses pop3 to come into my email client locally, so I don't have to go anywhere to read it and the spam filter in Thunderbird works quite well, so while I get some of that, it is hardly overwhelming, and most of it doesn't go into the inbox.

Grancey 11-02-2008 06:26 PM

I never pay attention. Occasionally, Red will be standing by when I open my email and he almost goes into shock. He reads and clears his inbox every day, and I "reduce" about once a year.

laudanum 11-02-2008 08:00 PM

In my main email, there is nothing unread in my inbox.
However, I have 42449 unread messages in various folders.

I subscribe to several lists and it goes automatically into each folder.

genuinegirly 11-02-2008 08:55 PM

None. I hate clutter.

Nisses 11-03-2008 12:53 AM

In my workmail at present: about 69.

I get to read through about 200 mails each day, provided I work that day, if not, it's 400 the next day.

I don't read them all, and some mails I read, I remark as unread because they are put on hold.

Personal mail: main address: about 10, will read through those today probably

Others combined: about 30 unread.

I need an email assistant :)

The bold of the text that indicates an undread message pisses me off. :)

little_tippler 11-03-2008 08:15 AM

None, I make sure I de-clutter regularly. All spam goes straight in the spam box and gets cleared away at regular intervals.

allaboutmusic 11-03-2008 08:25 AM

None. I use my inbox as part of my To-Do list, and file stuff away when actioned. Folders are your friend.

By the way, using Gmail to organise all my email has changed my life and saved me hours a week sorting out spam.

PonyPotato 11-03-2008 08:28 AM

None. I'm like little_tippler: Spam goes into the spam box and gets deleted at least once daily (in gmail, anyway) and I read all of my work emails in webmail over the weekend before I download them to Outlook on Monday morning. I had 53 "unread" emails in Outlook this morning, but all were read sometime over the weekend.

As soon as I see a new email in Gmail, I'm on it! Sometimes I wish I got more "real" emails, since a lot of them are ads or facebook notifications.

lotsofmagnets 11-03-2008 02:10 PM

currently 51. i´ve actually read them all as none are spam but they are messages about messages in other places so i leave them unread in my yahoo account so i know that i still need to act on them, then i either mark them as read or delete them. having said that i still have stüff dating back to july to action. lazy....

grumpyolddude 11-03-2008 02:46 PM

None in my active account. My old account that got spoofed has hundreds of thousands, waiting for Yahoo to keep their word and catch the a--hole who did it. I've a couple of more emails that I clear out occasionally... once every month or so. They have a couple hundred each; mostly newsletters and such that I really am not too interested in anymore.

Now, QW, on the other hand, maintains a healthy 3000 to 5000 unreads. She must really like me cause she always reads and responds to mine!

ItWasMe 11-04-2008 08:28 AM

I have 2092 unread emails on this computer, and I've had it for about a month. I'm not even going to go look at my old pc (now my daughter's pc).

Some are spam type, but I delete them within 2 days usually. Most of them are Yahoo groups emails. I browse the subject titles each day, and when I find time time and want to play I'll go through them.

stellabella1978 11-07-2008 08:49 PM

Too many - 27! They are from people too important to delete, but if I know what they're about I'll have to do something about them. This way I can plead ignorance.

MSD 11-10-2008 10:01 AM

None. If I don't open them, my Blackberry won't stop buzzing until I do.

dlish 11-13-2008 10:56 PM

i went through last week and deleted ALL the unread ones.

now i have 27 unread ones once more....why cant i just hit delete????

can you tell someones personality from the tidyness of their inboxes??

surely someone who keeps it all tidy and neat will be the same neat freak in real life

what do you all think?

This.

I will say that my gmail address probably has a lot that it has filtered out, but I rarely allow even junk mail to accumulate for longer than 15 days or so.

hunbun0704 11-15-2008 08:48 PM

Work: Zero unread. I read them, but doesn't mean I they are completed. I use follow up flags and catergorize them however.
Hotmail: 61. I just check it once / twice a week and have done a good job setting up rules to filter out things.
Office 2007 is awesome.
Yes - I'm a PC.

lukkehh 12-07-2009 12:26 PM

I have over 4000 :)

Grancey 12-07-2009 12:51 PM

Today, 468. And I just did a clean-up about a month ago.

None at work.
None on Gmail.
Over 300 on Yahoo.
Over 600 on Comcast.

I don't check those last two. They just get all the shipping notifications and ads. Gmail is more personal and whatever does seep through gets caught by the Google's awesome spam catcher. I just delete them in bulk without reading.

Salem 12-07-2009 01:05 PM

None, anywhere!

LordEden 12-07-2009 01:14 PM

I was bad about this up until I got my iphone. Then I spent my spare time at work cleaning out the inbox. Now, I don't let an unread email go anywhere. Both of my email addresses are organized and have no unread items in their folders.
