Screen legend Paul Newman has died at the age of 83 after losing his battle against cancer.
Actor Paul Newman dies at 83 | Film | guardian.co.uk One of my favorites. With one of my favorite screen lines: "Swim? Hell the fall's probably gonna kill ya!"

Shit.
He is one of his generation's greatest actors. I didn't realize he was that old. I may have to watch Absence of Malice or The Verdict today...

OMG, I hadn't heard.
When most of my adolescent friends were into Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy, I had this 8x10 autographed glossy B&W photo of him above my bed. I've always adored and admired him. What a beautiful man, inside and out, when he was young and as he grew older. And a class act always. I am so sad to hear this and will miss him but thankfully he's left us with so many beautiful films and photos.

Okay, that's really weird... last night, we had a bag of Newman's Own microwave popcorn while watching the debates (from 1-2:30am). It all means something!!

I worked for one of his Hole-In-The-Wall camps for years.
He came to visit once. Really cool guy. Really short. Very sad.

Never even heard of these camps, had to google them for info. The man was a class act, IMHO.

I haven't seen many of his movies, but I've always liked him. Such a generous person.

I'm sorry to see him go! Excellent actor and said to be a good person too. Will be missed.
Here he is in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I love these old movies. And it must be said, Paul Newman was rather gorgeous.

There are very few Hollywood stars that live a life that's moral and enviable. Newman was one of those few.

I logged on to Joblo.com today when I got home from work, feeling great, right after checking my messages and getting a nice one from my new girlfriend and then... BAM! "RIP Paul Newman" are the first words I see. What an awful way to end a day...
At least he left us with so many classics. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, The Towering Inferno (him and Steve McQueen had the magic), The Color of Money... hell, he even made Road to Perdition better than it already was. Fabulous actor, caring man, and all-around badass--he will be missed. To quote what brought down my day, "RIP Paul Newman".

Hole In the Wall
i worked at Boggy Creek Gang. My favorite moment with Mr. Newman was when he dropped by once and a kid was eating lunch next to him at a huge table. The camper was on the bench next to him and kept asking who this "Paul Newman guy" everyone was talking about. Paul pointed at the salad dressing bottle. The kid said, "oh". And someone said, "that's him, too." The camper looked at Mr. Newman and said, "nuh-uh, you're OLD". That man laughed so hard he had tears in his eyes. What an awesome man. He came to Boggy several times while I was there. But what he created was amazing. Kids with life-threatening illness are "normal." They can do chemo in the patch and go right back to climbing the rock wall.

A life well lived. I found out last night. The word was passed to his race team and other related racing entities. I was surprised that I knew about it nearly 12 hours before the news broke in general. I saw him at several races. He and Carl Haas owned a race team that was one of the best in CART and later Champ Car. Paul was always at the races with his team. He kept behind the scenes, never one to be a celebrity. If you treated him like an ordinary guy, he was happy to be just that. He was a very competitive racer, too. In fact, he competed ably until a few years ago. His last race was the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2005. Last month Limerock Race Course, near his home closed for an afternoon for Paul to come out and drive it one last time. We knew then his time was close.
Three years ago at the Long Beach Grand Prix, I was with a group of friends and one of the guys had a hat he had fashioned out of a Miller Lite 12 pack box. He had a monkey stuck on the front of it and pictures and autographs of drivers all over it. When Paul walked through the lobby of the Long Beach Hyatt, we stopped him and asked him if he'd wear the monkey hat. He did. Just an ordinary guy. |

I was out of touch all day due to a family reunion and didn't hear about this until now. Best wishes to his family; he will truly be missed. He was one of my favorite actors, and an admirable man.
