The Door to Hell
I came across this and found it very interesting. i needed to share.
i'm not very good with words, so ill let the website im pulling it from sum it up. Quote:
and a video to boot. i find it simply awe inspiring that a fire anywhere could burn for 35 years. i try to imagine the volumes of gas that must be contained in this so called cavern and it leaves me flabbergasted. this planet we live on will never cease to amaze me. any thoughts?

turkmenistan, eh? well at least we're not the only ones who absentmindedly squander priceless resources like it's going out of style.
can you imagine the energy that could have been/could be harvested from a fire burning for over 35 years? i would LOVE to see a high def documentary on this thing, the view looking into it must be mesmerizing. |

There is a coal fire underneath some land in Eastern Pennsylvania that has been burning for upwards of 80 years (if I remember correctly, which I may not!) Regardless, these pics are AWESOME. Very cool contribution.

Coal seams can burn for thousands of years. Due to the lack of oxygen and the difficulty of fighting fires underground, they smoulder continuously. I would imagine this is the same principle, only with gas instead of coal.
This should probably be in found on the net.

i was going to post this in found on the net, but for some reason i changed my mind at the last second. i cant remember why exactly, but im sure i had a good reason.
yeah, people could have probably used this for energy somewhere down the line, no doubt about that. ive heard of the coal fires, but i had no idea they were still burning and no idea where it was located. thanks for that nice bit of information.
