Heavy traffic up the aisle: 4 siblings to wed on same day
Chip Olsen , Midlands News Service
Here comes the bride. And the bride. And the bride. And the bride.
Four couples will tie the knot Friday in a single ceremony at Indian Creek Golf Course in the Elkhorn area.
Lisa Rishling, 32, said sharing a wedding with her two sisters and brother seemed natural for a family that has always been close. "I think it makes it even more special, sharing it with them,'' she said.
She will wed Carlos Esparza, 33. The other couples are: Josh Rishling, 27, and Theresa Griffin, 26; Laura Rishling, 24, and Phil Malone, 25; and Linda Rishling, 29, and Jeromy Nielsen, 33. All are of Omaha.
The couples said they get together for vacations, barbecues and football games. But the idea of getting married together began at Thanksgiving as a joke.
By Christmas, a group wedding was no longer a punch line. It was a plan.
"We wouldn't have done it any other way,'' Linda Rishling said.
They would have been in each other's weddings anyway, they said, so one ceremony was simpler.
The Rishlings' mother, Karen Miner of Arthur, Iowa, said, "I don't think you'll ever find kids who are as close as they are.''
Some traditions were tossed out to accommodate the crowd of brides and grooms.
No bridesmaids or groomsmen. Tuxedos won't match, and neither will the gowns.
Four ring bearers and five flower girls will fill out the wedding party.
Cliff Rishling of Omaha said he's looking forward to his three trips down the aisle, escorting one daughter at a time.
"It just blew me away,'' he said. "I think it is great.''
Griffin's father will walk her down the aisle. She is the daughter of Alan Smith and Sharon Griffin, both of Omaha.
The group ceremony will be the culmination of four long romances.
Lisa and Carlos, who are raising three boys, have been together for 14 years. They met while working at a restaurant. Josh and Theresa met in grade school and became high school sweethearts 10 years ago. Laura and Phil have been together since 2000 and have a daughter.
Linda and Jeromy will marry for the second time Friday. The two dated in high school and married young when their son was born. They divorced but began dating again in 2004.
During Friday's outdoor ceremony, the couples will exchange vows one after another. More than 300 guests are expected to attend.
At the reception, also to be held at Indian Creek, the couples will take the dance floor one at a time to a song each has chosen.
The couples also will cut their own wedding cakes -- at the same time.
Two of the couples -- Linda and Jeromy, Josh and Theresa -- even plan to honeymoon together in Florida. The other couples plan later trips.
"It's pretty extraordinary,'' Phil Malone said. "We're really close, and we've all been together for so long.''

It is an interesting idea, considering the cost of weddings these days. I am not against trying to do different weddings to save on the insane cost, but this case made me pause for a moment. A Jewish tradition is you do not have one simcha (happy occasion) join with another. I wonder if they cheat themselves out of some of that one amazing joyous account. Then I wonder about their spouses if they do not for one day desire their own limelight. Obviously they are all marrying in to such a family and have to compromise and have accepted it, it just made me pause.
But on the other hand to see such a close family is amazing, and I hope for no wedding politics.
