Oreos are for chumps!

Hydrox Cookie Homepage
Quote:
In honor of the 100th anniversary of Hydrox® cookies and in response to consumer demand for their favorite crème filled chocolate sandwich cookie, original recipe Hydrox® cookies, now with zero grams trans fats, will be back in stores for a limited time beginning in late August 2008.
Hydrox Cookies are 100 years old! That's older than any other chocolate sandwich cookie. Yep, even older than Oreos.

I was raised on these things - so excited that they're coming back to the stores this month. Look for their anniversary package:

The Early Years
Quote:
1908 – America is introduced to the first crème-filled chocolate sandwich cookie.
Hydrox cookies were developed as a result of a study visit by a group of baking experts from Loose-
Wiles Biscuit Company, later known as Sunshine Biscuit Company, to the famed biscuit bakeries of
England. Upon returning to America, the bakers combined their new knowledge with their own skill and
Hydrox cookies were born.
Now all they needed was a name for their new cookie that went well with sunshine. They thought of
water, because water and sunshine are elements of purity and cleanliness, and thus combined water’s
elements, hydrogen and oxygen, for the Hydrox cookie’s unique (and much debated) name.
When they were introduced, Hydrox cookies were described as the “king of biscuits” and were sold to
the public in 30-cent tins or by the pound.

1910 – The first word-of-mouth campaign for Hydrox cookies is used to drive sales and distribution.
The executives at Sunshine Biscuit Company were way ahead of their time when they enlisted consumers
to spread the word about Hydrox cookies, with an offer for a free package – just for the asking.

1912 – A strikingly similar chocolate sandwich cookie debuts.

1925 – Hydrox cookies are offered to retailers for the unprecedented deal of $1 for a dozen packages.
The cookies were described in a 1925 advertisement as “…not merely a biscuit, but the maximum of
goodness that human ingenuity can devise in a single biscuit.”
Hydrox cookie salesmen were encouraged to go after “new and profitable avenues of distribution of
drug stores, soda fountains and road stands.”

1926 – A modern marvel.
Special imported machinery was used to stamp out the signature pattern of Hydrox cookies, averaging
1,716 cookies per minute, with “Hydrox” on one side and “Sunshine” on the other.
I still am debating the name, a whole 10 minutes after learning of their existence. Hydrox?? Besides that point of contention, I'll try to celebrate the centennial by finding myself a package to consume. Huzzah.

Oreos? For chumps? Blasphemy!

Interesting, apparently the bizarre name comes from hydrogen and oxygen.

Oreo's for chumps? I beg to differ:

Pimp That Snack

I suppose as a much-debated name, it did it's job of drawing attention though? Even today it sounds weird

It's been a few years since I've seen them in stores. Grew up on 'em and even remember when Oreos came out.

Remember when there was a cookie section, not an entire aisle?

It looks like the American Gothic couple is on the packaging... too bad trademarks and original productions protection didn't exist way back in the 1930s... wait, it did?

Actually, that's Paul "Pa" Newman, and his daughter Nell, spoofing it (as satire and parody are considered fair use).

my dog (a black and white beagle-spaniel mix, by the name of Oreo) would bite you for such a remark.

actually, if you showed even the slightest hint of friendliness, she'd jump all over you and lick your face.

I have to admit that those with a glass of milk are just wonderful. Also the chocolate covered version, hard to find but wonderful when I am in the mood for a chocolate overload.

Oreo vs. Hydrox vs. Newman O’s

The other week Scott and I had an Oreo/Hydrox/Newman O's taste off for no reason at all other than to celebrate having Hydrox around again, at least for a while. We broke the tasting into Overall Cookie, Just the Biscuit Part, and The Creme, with a side consideration for dunking in milk.

For Overall I liked Oreos while Scott preferred the less sweet Hydrox. I preferred the extra crunch that the Oreos had and found that the flavors were the most balanced. The Newman O's had the crunchiest cookie and I found it had the most pronounced cocoa flavor, but I thought the cookies tasted slightly off, something which came through most when we compared the creme fillings.

Oreo had the sweetest and grittiest filling. I though the Hydrox filling had too many hints of powdered sugar/cornstarch, though Scott liked that it tasted like cake frosting from a can. I really disliked the Newman O's filling, it had a strong taste of raw grain to me, but it was Scott's favorite for being not too sweet.

When dunked in milk for two seconds the Newman O's held their crunch the best of all, with Hydrox showing signs of getting soggy fast, and Oreo's going "straight to mush!". A friend of mine uses Newman O's to mix into her homemade cookies and cream ice cream because they hold up against getting too soggy.

Yeah!!! I remember eating Hydrox cookies as a kid and thinking we were getting the cheap brand, but I always liked them. I didn't know they were the original, and I didn't know they were still around. I don't eat cookies anymore, but now I think I'll go out and get some!

mmmmm, cookies.

I love Oreos. I've never had Hydrox... the name makes me think of something medicinal, though, not sweet cookie goodness.

Hmm I never actually heard of Hydrox before this thread, but still Oreo's took the cookie to the next lvl with double stuffed...does Hydrox have a double stuffed version, I couldn't find one. I prefer double stuffed over regular any day either way.

Nope, no double stuffed Hydrox.
I kinda like the fact that they didn't make a double-sugary-icky-stuffed version.
