Danica Smith, the comedian's publicist, had said Thursday that Mac's condition was "stable," The Associated Press reported.

"When I got the call this morning, it was just devastating news," said Chicago Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster. "Let's face it: Bernie Mac was one of a kind. He was the best of the best in terms of giving you a good laugh."

Smith previously said the pneumonia wasn't related to sarcoidosis, a lung disease Mac had, which had been in remission since 2005, according to AP.

Mac caused a stir in July with some jokes he made during a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, AP reported.

Mac -- born Bernard Jeffrey McCollough -- starred in the Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show." His film roles included the "Ocean's Eleven" series, "Friday," "Get on the Bus," "Transformers" and "Bad Santa."

RIP Bernie, you were a very funny man in my eyes. He was only 50! :(

This is a real bummer....

This man has brought a lot of laughter to me in my lifetime.

He'll surely be missed.

The fact that he died before Amy Winehouse is a shame.

yellowmac 08-09-2008 09:25 AM

Very sad news, indeed. Heard he was ill but seemed like he'd be fine, but now to have him pass away is very depressing. I feel terrible for his friends and family.

mixedmedia 08-09-2008 09:56 AM

Oh, how terrible.

I've had few instances of laughter more uncontrollable than watching him talk about kids in The Kings of Comedy.

It's a real shame....pneumonia? Motherfucker, seems so senseless.

Reese 08-09-2008 09:57 AM

wow..

ratbastid 08-09-2008 10:05 AM

I liked him a lot in the Oceans movies, but the role he totally SLAYED me in was in Bad Santa.

The "half" scene was beautifully done. If you've seen it, you remember. And sitting across from a squirming John Ritter. Genius. Pure genius.

He'll be missed.

Pneumonia is one of the worst afflictions to recover from; too many too often underestimate the severity of the ailment. Still... in awe that he died from the complication so suddenly.

May his spirit live on.

I'm sorry he's gone. Seems awful young. I never really got his humor, but he certainly made a lot of folks laugh. That's worth something.

This totally sucks. In Transformers I laughed until I teared up at his scenes, same with Bad Santa and Ocean's 11. Totally fucked up!!!!!!!!

Reese 08-09-2008 11:07 AM

The scene from Life keeps popping in my head where the Warden is holding up the baby comparing it to the prisoners and they all pop up like Spartacus and claim to be the daddy and Bernie steps forward last and is like "I da pappy!" So fucking Hilarious.

I saw this coming when I heard the reports about his health, but it's still hard to take in. Very funny man and way too damn young.

How is she even breathing still?

Shame to see Bernie go. He will be missed from our screens.

I always enjoyed Bernie Mac's humor. This is a bummer.

The same way Keith Richards is...no one knows...

I loved the Bernie Mac show, one of the funniest and most inventive shows on TV..

Poppinjay 08-11-2008 04:36 AM

Here's some irony, or maybe not. I haven't checked with Alanis Morrisette. When I read about Bernie Mac's death, the article included a pic of him on stage with a couple of singers, including Isaac Hayes.

Next day: Isaac Hayes, dead at 65. They had just wrapped up shooting a film together.
