Ways to get around 1 year Probation for drivers license
in edmonton they just passed a new drving law which requires new drivers a 1 yr prob period when getting the learners. So if i got my license now, i wouldnt be able to get the class 5 license till '04. Is there anyway to avoid this, ala getting license somewhere else in canada and just updating it to an Albertan with another exam

Just do like everyone else, drive without a license and try not to get pulled over.

Sorry buddy, I dont think there are any shortcuts or "ways around" the law. In Ontario, the wait is 9 months if you go to a driving school...otherwise its a year.
Otherwise, you could do what KillerYoda said...but u know the consequences if u get pulled over. |

LUCKY!...the way it works in vancouver is...you take a written test for a learners license...wait half a year to take a road test to get a 'new driver's license' then wait a year and a half to take another road test to get a regular license. Also, from what i heard in edmonton you can also start driving at 14...here in vancouver...it's 16 and they're talking about RAISING the age...lemme tell you, there are some stupid reckless teenage drivers but come ON! The reason they drive insanely is cuz everytime some teenager decides to be ratarded all tehy get is a slap on the wrist...meanwhile responsible teenage drivers who actually need to drive is suffering the consequences...
to answer your question, no there's no way...i heard that if you had an international license you can apply to be able to drive here with a temp license but no clue on the details...and also...from a driver who started day 1 obeying the rules and getting frustrated by the rules, suck it up at least you're not in vancouver. Sorry for a rant, I witnessed a car full of dumbass teens almost hit a group of elderly today and hen giggling amongst themselves...losers...

I read the way the graduated licence program works...I don't see why it's a problem necessitating going around it.

jhericurl21, there is no problem with the new rules, in fact many of them are good rules for all to follow.
I've been driving the mean streets of Edmonton for many years now, and there are some shitty drivers. I hope this essentially improves the overall quality of the drivers on our streets, and I hope you do to. The government didn't go to a meeting one day and say jhericurl21 is looking to get his license soon, so lets put a May 20th restriction until GDL starts. They likely invested (wasted ) alot of money and figured this was the best. Lets hope it is |

wow, that sounds even a bit more stiff than the cali laws they instituted a month before I was licensed. here's the way it works here:
at 15.5 you can get a learning permit, by going through drivers education classes, then passing a multiple choice test administered by the DMV. (that's Department of Motor Vehicles) at 16, you can test for your drivers license. that's a behind-the-wheel test, usually takes about 20-30 minutes. not too traumatic. You're awarded your license at that time, with restrictions. * no passengers under 21 yrs old * no driving after 12, before 5 Exceptions on the passenger rule are made. For example, I was allowed to drive my sister places, to the babysitters and back, and to soccer practice and back. Cops are not allowed to pull you over JUST because you look too young to be carrying passengers, but if you are, and have some and they pull you over for something else, it just get's tacked on. one more thing to get in trouble for. After a year, your license rolls over to a normal license. at that time you can pay to have yours replaced early so it doesn't say "RESTRICTED" on it, or just wait till you have to renew. For the original poster: suck it up, man, life goes on. at least you're licensed and rollin'. |

In Colorado, you can get your permit at 15 with the drivers education course. 15.5 is the limit if you don't take the course. From the time you get your permit until you turn 16, you have to rack up 60 documented driving hours. Unfortunately, most parents (at least around here) will sign off dozens of hours just to get kids out of their hair.
I'm sure there are restrictions regarding the age of passengers and hours, but in my small town no one paid attention... As far as the original post goes, I think you're SOL. Just go along with the system, I guess.

As the others said just Suck it Up. You need practice and you shouldn't be distracted. I had 10,000Km (unusual circimstances) of city driving under my belt before I got my unrestricted licence.
It's really safer for everyone and helps impress the idea your licence is a privilage that can be revoked when you become a danger to others. Most traffic laws and regulations are to protect others. The system doesn't care if you are only a danger to your self. -- "Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock
