George Carlin, RIP

http://www.etonline.com/news/2008/06/62841/index.html

I'm having a moment of silence for someone who brought joy and laughter to the lives of so many people. He will be missed.

RIP George Carlin

RIP George. He was one of my favorites. You will be missed.

ET breaks the news that comedian George Carlin has died from heart failure. The man who made famous the "seven words you can never say on television" passed away at 5:55 p.m. Sunday at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, his longtime publicist said. He was 71.

Carlin, who has had several heart attacks and a history of cardiac issues, went into the hospital this afternoon after complaining of heart problems.

Carlin has more than 20 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, numerous TV and movie roles, and three best-selling books to his credit. Last year, he celebrated his 50th year in show business, and he had just finished his last HBO special in March, "It's Bad for Ya."

Oh man. I grew up watching videos of Carlin's stand-up performances with my parents, and listening to cassette tapes of his performances, including "Seven Words You Can Never Use on Television." My parents are huge fans of his work, and they passed that on to me. I'm really saddened to hear this.

RIP, George.

SSJTWIZTA 06-22-2008 09:59 PM

i came to the TFP now just to post this.

Unbelievable. i will miss this guy.

Hain 06-22-2008 10:04 PM

Ah damnit not him, too...

Punk.of.Ages 06-22-2008 10:13 PM

I just barely heard about this.

The world is truly a sadder place with the absence of this man.

RIP

Fotzlid 06-22-2008 10:14 PM

Damn

Glad I got a chance to see him live many years ago.

Punk.of.Ages 06-22-2008 10:15 PM

Oh... two George Carlin threads. Posted within one minute of each other too.

If anybody deserves two threads it's this man.

EDIT: Haha, they got merged while I was posting.

evilbeefchan 06-22-2008 10:30 PM

Damn, he was one of the rare performers who kept getting sharper with age. His scathing wit and brutal honesty will be missed, but forever embraced.

RIP

Tully Mars 06-23-2008 03:10 AM

Well- shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits.

I'd add sucks to the list today.

jewels 06-23-2008 03:14 AM

OMG! I'm so out of the loop.

I can't believe he's gone.

pig 06-23-2008 03:20 AM

I can't really say I'm sad he's dead, rather I'm happy he was alive. Regardless, RIP Mr. Carlin.

Baraka_Guru 06-23-2008 03:21 AM

He had a full, productive career, and never seemed to lose his edge. As one of the greatest comedians, he kept us laughing for years despite just how crazy the world was.

Thanks, George.

This is nice. I'll try not to be sad. :)

m0rpheus 06-23-2008 04:02 AM

Sigh the world just got a lot less funny :(

Here's a few classics.

And the all-time classic.

Thanks for all the laughs George.

"In his length career as a comedian, writer, and actor, George Carlin has not only made us laugh, but he makes us think," Stephen Schwarzman, Kennedy Center chairman, said in a statement.
That is one of the things I think is true about George Carlin. Unfortunately few I think seem to realize that he often spoke of how people were concerned with words rather than intent. In interviews, one could easily see that not only was he a funny man, but an intelligent one as well.

SSJTWIZTA 06-23-2008 04:12 AM

thanks m0rpheus, now im bummed all over again.

-sigh- i wonder how this is going to impact the comedy field.

Charlatan 06-23-2008 04:12 AM

His album, A Place for My Stuff, was the first album I ever bought. At one time, I knew the whole thing by heart and used to perform it for my friends.

Like pig... I am just glad he was alive.

Esoteric 06-23-2008 04:13 AM

Sad, sad news. He's one of my favorite comedians and now he's gone. :[

RIP sir, you will be missed.

Halx 06-23-2008 04:15 AM

I'm very sad that we won't be able to hear or see from him anymore. I was truly shocked to see this when I woke up. I think of George every time I think of all my "stuff" and how I keep having to find a bigger place to keep it all. Like right now.

maiden_fan_us 06-23-2008 04:26 AM

The world just lost a belly laugh and a few IQ points... RIP.

ngdawg 06-23-2008 04:36 AM

I got my first Carlin album when I was in high school. I now have 5 of them and a few, like Charlatan, I had memorized. I could recite the Hair poem at the drop of a hat, would quote Al Sleet, the Hippy Dippy weatherman and nod in agreement on many of his observations. His bit about "If you take 7 white boys and 1 black boy and put them in a room together, you won't get the 1 black boy saying, "Gee, fellas, good game today.", but you WILL get 7 white boys saying, "Yo, Man, Whassup." And that was over 30 years ago.
71 these days is not old. He was and always will be an icon.
What a sad way to start a week.....

I went through about a month earlier this year when I was listening to this cd every day in my car. There are so many comedians, but only a few who are really touched by genius. He was one of those few.

ratbastid 06-23-2008 04:54 AM

Man, what a loss.

But I think he'd have said something like: Look, you gotta go sometime. At least you can make a little difference, make a mark on the world, while you're still around.

And he did.

Brewmaniac 06-23-2008 06:59 AM

As previously stated "Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits"

You will be greatly missed! RIP George

Bacchanal 06-23-2008 07:27 AM

This is terrible news. I've got most of his HBO specials saved on my DVR, but to know I'll never hear anything new from him really sucks.

What a shitty thing to wake up to.

Cynthetiq 06-23-2008 07:46 AM

geez we're losing them faster than we're replacing them.

Toledo Window Box, Occupation: Foole.

Man oh man did I ever develop around his humour.

He was another raison for peace.

canuckguy 06-23-2008 08:30 AM

When I awoke this morning and heard the news I was gutted. The local radio personalities just passed over the story which added to my anger.

I can honestly say that I have listened, watched or read some of his work everyday over the past little while. I love stand up comedy and go on binges of certain comedians over the year. Lately it was George.

Bad day at work? Queue up some Carlin on youtube while i did my dishes and made dinner always got my chest heaving with laugher and my mind off my troubles.

I will miss his work.

World's King 06-23-2008 09:21 AM

I think he would be mad at me for crying...

BadNick 06-23-2008 09:42 AM

Funny, he was just here a minute ago.

...which is what he said he hoped people would say when he died.

Very well said. I'm glad someone remembered that.

why can't the fates take the trainwreck that is Gibert Godfrey, instead of the good ones?

I love Mr. Carlin, Genius material.

Yikes! Scary thought. Let's hope the comics aren't going the way of the poets....

George Carlin was one of the few people in this world that I truly admired. I've lost my hero and the world is a duller place for it.

Thank Joe Pesci for youtube clips to remember him by.

KellyC 06-23-2008 12:27 PM

This sucks majorly. He was the greatest one-man show to ever appear on stage. Thanks for all the laughs and lessons. RIP.

Nisses 06-23-2008 12:30 PM

Man, what a sad day.

I've listened to his stuff for over 10 years now (which is long for me).

I always liked his clear, sharp & sarcastic comments, and felt that alot of stuff had a good core of truth in it.

I wonder who's gonna fill up this void now... I doubt anyone will any time soon.

Tophat665 06-23-2008 03:45 PM

I'm sitting under a clock made from the cover of Carlin's Class Clown album. The Icebox Man routine was the first schtick I ever memorized.

You know 71 years is not a bad run, and we paid him well for doing more or less what he would have done for free to a smaller audience.

When I grow up, I still want to be George Carlin.

Shauk 06-23-2008 04:43 PM

“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.”
