OK What the fuck? This ever happen to you?

I recently ordered Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii from Best Buy. I had a few gift certificates, so I couldn't think of a better use for them, could you?

Well today my shipment arrived. I thought it was a little strange that when I held the box, it was very light and when I shook it, I could only hear what sounded to be a thin card bouncing around inside. I thought to myself, "Maybe they just ship the disc in a sleeve. How shady." Well, when I opened it, I discovered that it was even less.

The contents of my box:

1 packing slip

That's it. The box was empty except for a packing slip telling me that the game was supposedly riding along with it.

Now, before we blame Best Buy, this story isn't that sensational. As I was on the phone with Best Buy, I observed that the end of the package that I did not open was in fact taped up. The cardboard flap that was taped showed ripping on the underside, indicating that the glue holding it had been torn.

So, it looks like it was opened somewhere along the delivery process and the contents were never replaced. This could be theft or it could be accident.. I don't care. The Best Buy associate was quick to re-ship my order and that's that. I gotta wait a little longer to play the game, but I got something to talk about out of it.

The solution to your problem has two ingredients:

-Guns
-Bullets

Reap your vengeance good sir.

What a waste of their $. A whole box for just a packing slip.

You're doing it wrong. That's so 1990.

The solution to this problem has two ingredients:

-A tattered bag of greasy fast food
-The floor of the local Best Buy

...

I'm glad when I buy toys that the box doesn't come empty.

This is especially important since I buy firearms.

Bought a movie at Circuit City once, got home and opened the case, no movie.

I noticed that the plastic wrap had been slit at the top, but didn't think twice.

They replaced it, which is all I wanted.

Knowing Best Buy, I thought they would say YOU stole it / got it and just wanted a free one and told you to pound salt. Glad they are making good on this.

Guess someone at the Post Office needed a new game....glad someone at Best Buy had a heart-been my experience those in their stores have neither that or a brain.
This isn't exactly the same, but almost, not quite...
My old computer had fried itself and a friend from VA, up visiting, took it with him, thinking he could retrieve files. He couldn't, so he UPS'd it from work to my friend in MO, who most definitely could do a retrieval. Never got there. VA friend gets tracking number, UPS says, yep, they delivered it, it was signed for, although signature isn't readable. VA friend says they owe him $300, the insured amount. UPS says "Go fuck off. We delivered it, not our job to make sure the person who signed for it was the person on the label".

You oughta send your story in to consumerist.com. I'm glad though that they're quick to replace it, so at least you can laugh about it. I hope the new shipment doesn't get ripped off in transit again, though.

I wonder whose job they think it is?

BadNick 03-19-2008 07:48 PM

Maybe they should implant a secret code on each disk so they can detect when and where it is played. That way, the Best Buy Police can swoop in and capture the criminals. Or not.

Bizarre!

I've got Super Smash Bros. rented right now from Gamefly. I'm loving it. I hope you get your copy soon; I'm thinking of keeping this one.

Good going getting Best Buy to send you the replacement. The only dealings I have with BB is through Geek Squad, and that is only because I know the guy that works there... I know where he lives and sleeps... He can't screw me over that badly without a damned good reason...

It was obviously the sender's responsibility, duh. He was supposed to ride with the package and make sure that the person receiving the package was the intended recipient.

Quick and easy fix. The plan:
  • The recipient gets a PIN (from the sender?)
  • Recipient must type in correct PIN before receiving package (driver does not know PIN)
  • Recipient signs that package has been received
  • Recipient opens package to validate contents
  • Recipient now signs the contents are what was supposed to be shipped
This works as far as I see it, with UPS, as all the UPS guys that came to my door have those bastard of electronic pads that are evil to sign your name on. The only new things added are the PIN and a second signature. I stole this from my previous school where students must pick up important documents, sign that they picked up documents, and sign again validating that they were the correct documents.

Now, that's some ol' BULLSHIT. Every time I've gotten UPS to a residence, they ask for my last name after I sign. Once or twice (with pretty expensive shit), they actually did ask for an ID.

They don't do this so much at buiness deliveries, where Mr. So-and-so might be in a meeting or out to lunch, but to a residence they're pretty good about it. Also, you can look online after the fact and see what person signed for it.

I'd have either 1) gone on a goddamn killing spree, or 2) sued the dog shit out of them. Just, you know, after exhausting the customer-service-number-can-I-talk-to-your-boss-then? route as far as humanly possible.

Which, surprisingly, works out pretty well sometimes.

When my sister ordered a new Dell laptop before she went off to college last fall, I had her add on a 4GB USB flash drive because they were on sale. The computer and other peripherals arrived without incident through UPS. The flash drive wash shipped separately through Airborne Express. I didn't even have to open the box to know it was missing because the box had a hand-sized hole in it. The box wasn't even retaped or anything. It was pretty obvious someone at AE helped themselves to a freebee.

Step 1 -- Rip a hole in a box.
Step 2 -- Remove the junk in the box.
Step 3 -- Who cares as long as you don't get caught?

yellowmac 03-22-2008 08:31 AM

Wow, you know, I just remembered that every time I've had a delivery through UPS, they simply ring the doorbell, leave the package at the door, and take off. They don't even wait for me to show up to sign for it. And this definitely happened with pretty important packages that required a signature. Thankfully nothing's ever been stolen, though I'm not surprised that the quality of service you get from UPS leads to some possibly shady characters working there that could lead to goods being stolen.
