For those of us who love the moon
It's that time of year! Lunar Eclipse
Local weather says snow showers, but I'm hoping not and will be out there with the tripod set up. |

If it's not as cold here as it is today (brr!), I'll be trying to find a spot where I can see it comfortably. Thanks for posting this.

Yeah, I'll be watching the eclipse. The Moon, Sun and Stars are big things down here in Mayaland. Think I'll drive out to a deserted section of beach and get away from all other light sources. Wish my good camera was working.

Damn, I thought this was going to be TFP Wiccans.
Well, I guess a lunar eclipse is a good start. I hope I get to see it.

I can see the moon from my desk! Hell yes!
The bottom edge is barely starting to be obscured. How exciting!

I can see the diminishing moon between the trees on my deck. Hopefully, the other side of the eclipse will be above the trees. The skies are perfect here for watching.

Yeah it looks awesome! Too bad my decent camera isn't decent anymore. My old Powershot just does cut it for night photo's:
It does fine on sunrises

I'm glad I got the star. Seeing them around the moon is almost as cool as the eclipse itself.
Apparently, from what I read in the link, that is not a star, it's Saturn. Pretty cool! Last edited by ngdawg; 02-20-2008 at 07:44 PM.. |

It was awesome. Our skies cleared up after a late afternoon flurry so we had a great view. It was cold out but I think we got a bit warmed by the mystical event. ...well, it's not really a mystery, but seems mystical anyway.

I love looking with my telescope, but even a half decent pair of binoculars is great ...not to mention, when scanning the sky with a binocular you will find all sorts of very cool star clusters and nebulae ...if you do a little research as to what you can find before you go looking. Hey, this question crossed my mind so I looked it up and I think it's interesting. The surface temp of the moon changes from about 107C to 123C when fully lit, down to about -153C when in the dark. |

Interestingly to me, is that for some reason I wasn't too excited about the whole thing.
Its interesting to me since I'm such an astronomy buff but what you can see with the naked eye just seems so mundane. I looked out a bit when it was about about 1/4th, saw it at totality, and then, meh. I'd have spent more time outside had it been warmer out, but it was quite cold and I wasn't motivated enough.

Gorgeous night! We saw the complete lunar eclipse and then the clouds came in and covered the sky. Still a great night. Did not make it to the hot springs. Stumbled upon a herd of resting elk in a creek bed and decided to turn around and head back to the car rather than wander around them and possibly startle them. I'm going to plan more night hikes on full moon nights.

I tried to get a few pictures, but the school camera just wouldn't cooperate. The fucking thing thinks it's smarter than me; no shit there isn't enough light to meter properly, it's a full lunar eclipse! Even set on a 5.0 aperture (because for some reason it decided it didn't want to go down to 2.8) and 25 second exposure, it wouldn't take the picture when I pressed the button. I would have taken a few with my camera, but the low-light sensitivity isn't good enough, which is why I was trying the SLR in the first place.
