Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of the World Chess Federation, called Fischer "a phenomenon and an epoch in chess history, and an intellectual giant I would rank next to Newton and Einstein."
Only Newton and Einstein worked out the rules of the universe as we know them. Fischer played chess and went insane.

This is a great article. The only thing I knew about Bobby Fisher was his incredible record and years of seclusion and possible insanity. All of that in a vague sense. Never bothered to look into it more. It's interesting to read about him becoming an Icelandic citizen and some detailed descriptions of moments of insanity.
It is sad that he has died. It is convenient that it was when he was 64. "From square one he's watching all 64." - Chess the musical

Wow... The only things I really knew of him is that he was a phenomenon in chess and the rumors that he went coco for cocoa-puffs.
His legacy in Fischer random chess, or Chess 960, still exists. For some reason or another there is a distributed computing client (look at my sig. while it's there) called Chess960 through Boinc. I do not support it. I am more of the medicine and astronomy BOINC supporter. If you are into chess and computers, something you might like.

I saw a biography piece on him just last year. What a fascinating story!
Indirectly, he's responsible for my lapses of chess addiction.

My son has, for years, worn a bracelet: "WWBFD?" (what would Bobby Fischer do?).
He's off in Philly at the Liberty Bell Open. I must email him this link. It was unfortunate that Fischer eccentricities overshadowed his chess brilliance, but tragic that world politics and US (and Soviet) foriegn policy interfered with what should have been a golden age of chess. |
