Oooh fancy! This sounds like a good idea halx

Willravel 01-10-2008 05:52 PM

I submit Halx as admin of the month (and me as brown noser of the month).

Very interesting idea, so long as it doesn't become a popularity contest. It seems a good way to gently nudge people to do their best.

ShaniFaye 01-10-2008 05:59 PM

Im sure lots of people will appreciate it....though Im not one to "do good" just cause somebody is watching, thats usually when I tend to fade into the background lol

TotalMILF 01-10-2008 06:05 PM

Oooh, shiny!

That was my first thought, but having the moderators decide it ought to keep things from going that route, I should think.

Oh I didn't mean that it'd be who's popular to the general public (Ustwo would be a shoe in), I meant who's popular with the mods.

Plan9 01-10-2008 06:15 PM

I'll have to PM somebody.

Merit badges ROCK.

This is awesome. Thank you Your Tilted Hotness.

The lady gives Halx a curtsy and slips out unnoticed.

I think that emoticon just jacked this thread.

ZING!

dlish 01-10-2008 07:35 PM

i think its a swell idea.

but id like to think that all regulars here give good advice, help clean the boards etc. it may help in making a few of those sitting on the edge a little more productive.

im all for it.

jorgelito 01-10-2008 11:20 PM

Terrible idea. This will definitely turn into a popularity contest and further stratify the cliques and elites on the board.

Shit, does this mean I have to go back to being nice?

What, are you going to climb back in the womb? That's the last time you were nice.

jorgelito, I'm going to have to sit down and buy you a beer some time just to get your idea on who's in what cliche, etc. For the life of me, I've never figured that one out.

Halx 01-11-2008 06:06 AM

One of the principle standards of the TFP is to discourage popularity contests. That's why the categories here do not define opinions, only actions.

You'll need to buy me one too......

OOh, can we go to the Berghoff again?

I don't have a strong opinion one way or another about the awards, but I had a couple of thoughts:

Actions and opinions are not mutually exclusive. The categories listed above must defined by the collective opinion of the moderators. (Unless there some objective criteria that will will be used to assign membership to a particular category). Anyone's opinion (moderator or not) of who should win an award must be based on a subjective assessment of the actions of that individual.

For most of the categories, people already have their own ideas about who is a good moderator, mentor, etc. Why should someone care about the moderators' assessment of exemplary behavior?

Is a badge from the moderators necessary? What are the costs and benefits of adding badges? Will the effect of badges be similar to when post count was reported on everyone's post? Will awards increase good posts? Or will they undermine intrinsic motivation to post well?

Again, I don't care one way or another and it's obviously been decided already.

That was far more succinct than my post.

genuinegirly 01-11-2008 08:01 AM

I imagine that judging will be carried out as impartially as possible.

TFP has cliques? I must me missing some extra "Tilted Too Cool" board or something. Is that a subdivision of Tilted Sports? I stay clear of that neighborhood...

Shauk 01-11-2008 08:07 AM

eh, i'm not gonna change my habits for any sort of... imaginary thing.

TFP, the next incarnation of a text based MMO, defeat these dungeons to aquire this loot.

good idea for those who are interested in this sort of thing though :p

I don't doubt that.

Halx 01-11-2008 08:20 AM

You cynics are funny. "*I'm* not going to jump through hoops just for an award!" "I can see all the mods' friends winning all the awards." "Is this even necessary?"

Come on, people. When I propose something, I'm thinking about the upside. What the hell else would I be thinking about? "I need to find a way to praise everyone I like!" Right. Right. You don't have to bust your ass to earn it, but if you do, the WHOLE COMMUNITY will recognize you, not just the mods. This is encouragement to raise the level of quality here. Can you doubt that?

I don't think anyone is worried about the intent, at least no one sane, I think its just natural cynicism after seeing these kind of things in the past.

sapiens 01-11-2008 08:37 AM

I'm not worried about "friends" being rewarded. I do think that there are many good posters on this board. It's clear that these badges represent an effort to raise the level of quality. I enjoy thinking about how to change people's behavior (increasing post quality, for example). I'm skeptical that giving badges will increase the quality of posts. However, I do appreciate the intent and effort.

Shauk 01-11-2008 08:43 AM

again, I really don't care who gets these merit badges or not. it doesn't effect their contribution to this site. Sure, it's nice to be recognized, and i'm NOT trying to be negative about this, I just am contributing to the conversation the overall message of "kudos for trying to implement something for part of your market to aspire to, but I'm not in this target demographic" thats all.

Clearly he was an officer.

Soldiers fight for their friends, lofty things like their country or their God, their next meal, or if there is a visible end to the fighting.

Kinda like TFP, I'd imagine.

Halx 01-11-2008 08:55 AM

I guess, being behind the curtain and overseeing all discussions about the site, I am a little defensive when people even consider bias. We have an eclectic mix of personalities. The intent to stick to the rulebook and to remain as impartial as possible is a part of everything the mods do. The winners of these awards will be decided in complete fairness.

Hell no! Being an ass is awesome. There is no need to be nice to everyone. Reading what you and WK think of many things is half the reason I am on tfp!
