I find it funny that many people feel they have to justify why they have an account. Almost like it's embarrassing to be on myspace or facebook. Just an observation.
I don't have facebook. All the peoplep I want to keep in contact with have myspace. If I had some friends that were on facebook instead of myspace, I'd probably get one of those too, but I don't see the point in having both.

I don't feel the need to justify it except to those who have irrational hatred for such sites.
How's this for justification: Yesterday I got a friend request from a name I vaguely remember from highschool. I didn't recognize her from her picture and had to dig out an old yearbook to make the connection. It was difficult because she's had a bunch of plastic surgery and completely changed her look. Apparently she's now "Canada's Top Fetish-Porn Star". Really! I clicked "Ignore".

I have an account. I tried to create an account for the first Roman emperor (Augustus) so I could make him my boyfriend.. but facebook wouldn't let me.

I've got a Facebook account. It actually put me back in touch with a bunch of friends from Elementary School and High School.
What's crazy? - Having an Elementary School Reunion... what a trip. Oh - and battleship on there is hella addicting.

I was extremely anti-Facebook for the first two years that it was in operation. I think my attitude was based primarily on the fact that I was a grad student (often working as a TA) and all the undergrads I taught were obsessed with it, and used it to hook up and stalk their exes, etc.
I finally gave it a chance last summer, though (after trying in vain to make new friends in Iceland)... and I can easily say that is has revolutionized my social life here abroad. I don't think I would have had as much use for it while I was still in the US, but it has been fantastic for meeting new people in Iceland... now I'm a proselytizer and have gotten 99% of my friends to join, which has been a lot of fun. I also really like the ease of sharing pictures via Facebook albums... so much easier than sending out mass e-mails with photo attachments, or even using a blog. It's definitely one of my top 3 visited websites every day (including TFP).

I have it but it is rather useless for me...
All of my friends keep in contact with me through IM or email, or I see them on a day to day basis. I got a Facebook in order to coordinate study schedules while working as a tutor, and would throw some problems up there. However, don't even get me started on what I think of Myspace.

I have a myspace that I rarely use except to check up on what my kids are up to.
I've been able to find some old friends on Facebook and for me, it's a lot more fun to use.

I have accounts with Myspace, Faceboook and Friendster. It seemed like many of the people I was trying to find (stalk) were scattered across all three sites until they began to gravitate towards one.
I think I still have an account with classmates.com as well, since many people I knew from high school ended up there first. By the way, has anyone here heard of Essembly.com?

I dont have an account on myspace, facebook or any of the other "social networking" sites.
I find email, IM and text messaging does the job well enough.

the way I see it, is that so many people are only interested in having online, shallow conversations....(i'm in no way comparing this ingenious site to either facebook or myspace)....the less confrontational people have to be, the more comfortable they will be when speaking their mind...the perfect outlet for that is facebook and myspace. Yes, I will admit, I have an account on both. However, I usually only respond to things people send me, you know, because it's usually the only way some people choose to communicate.

I think alot of facebook is futile, i prefer myspace, but I do have a facebook. I think these type of websites are relaxing, fun and a agood way to stay in touch with friends when schedule does not allow you t meet them physically, or they live far from you.

I'm on Facebook and I love it (34, btw, on the fading edge of Gen X), I'm on there all the time. I don't have much use for myspace-- seems like overall, a much younger crowd looking for music and hookups.
One of my high school students, a bright young girl, very calmly explained to me, "Oh, you don't want to be on MySpace, Mr. A. You want to be on Facebook. Facebook is for people connecting. MySpace is for teen sluts to get laid." Out of the mouths of babes....

I had a FB account, but deactivated it recently. Too much time wasted there when I could be doing something more constructive (like spending time here, for example)
Besides, friend requests from strangers is extremely creepy- lately FB was starting to wimp out on these by not allowing you to ignore a request, but letting you confirm it later. WTF? Seriously, if I had my way I would include an option that sends the friend-requester a notification that their request was rejected. Luckily, that's all behind me now anyway. On a side note, I know this thread is old- does anyone still use MySpace anymore???

I have a Facebook. I don't have connections to TFP there. Partly because I haven't made the connections. But also partly because I have a LOT of kids, students, religious family and old religious college friends there. I have to keep things very G rated and hesitate to make connections between the two.

I recently deleted my MySpace account, I hadn't used it in at least a year and it appeared none of my friends used it anymore either. I use Facebook daily - it's been a very useful tool to reconnect with my scattered family members and to get back in touch with some old friends. I do have a very small handful of TFP folks as friends.

I prefer phone calls to facebook messages. I deleted my facebook profile for this reason specifically. I found that, within the next few days, I got countless phone calls from people calling me just to 'see what was up' since they couldn't check my facebook to find out. mission accomplished!

I signed up for one back in April for reasons still not clear to me. Perhaps I was feeling lonely with recent events in my life.
I typically just post things on there that are not worthy of a normal blog entry or plain silly. On the plus side I have been in touch with friends from high school that I have not talked to in 15 years.

Agreed that FB is pretty useless. That said, however, I have an FB page, used mostly to read about what my semi-friends and acquaintances are doing/feeling at the moment, and for me to update my status, sometimes on a daily basis when I'm feeling bored, almost like a Twitter account (which I don't and will never have). Most of the 'friends' on my FB page are people I've encountered on other forums (i.e., I haven't met them in person), a few co-workers, a few former co-workers, a college buddy or two, and one person I reconnected with from elementary school. I also have a myspace page which I haven't used in at least a year. I keep it up because I worked hard to create my page back when I was a myspace regular, and because I'm kind of a narcissist who likes to see digital representations of herself.
...More justifications, I know. But we're meaning-making beings who seem to need to have a reason for everything, so explanations are in order.

i have one and i enjoy it. it keeps me in touch with friends and relatives that live in other states. in fact i share one with my wife. i had one and she knows all of my user names and passwords to everything and she was on there and commented on someones status and they thought it was me so i told her to just add her name to it. that way it keeps everything open and honest.
feel free to friend me if you want. its under Chris-Christy Hall. in atlanta ga.
